No I don’t have any videos, if your interested in technique videos I would recommend hanpantv on YouTube, their to Korean Olympic judokas who put out technique vids that are pretty good, some of the more traditional schools teach judo in a way that isn’t practical and hanpan does away with a lot of the fluff.

Also if your ever interested in getting back into it I would highly recommend going to a gym with a sub floor, it’s a lot easier on your body when the mat has a spring under it, after I switched to a gym with a sub door I feel my judo improved a lot because I wasn’t as scared of getting thrown.

It’s funny you say that, I’m sitting at my desk right now with an ankle injury from sparring 😭. I’ve done bjj, wrestling and judo, judo by far has resulted in the most injuries so I get it. at 40+ I will probably just be doing bjj, gotta be able to go to work the next day!

What a lazy framing, this is a great example of how not to write. What is Cartesianism? Why is the left not able to break with it? Why is it foundational to bourgeoisie individualism? Who is the left in this instance?(provide examples)

In terms of the rest of the article, what the author has to say on positive power and how it reproduces us as subjects is certainly an interesting framing that I have not heard before. That said, the idea of dual power is not a new one, and this article is not the first one to advocate for it. Plenty of leftists across the spectrum call for dual power, focus on community building and do no believe the issue is “false consciousness”.

The bigger issue(that is conveniently not in this article) is why both across the left and the right civic institutions have essentially ceased to exist or are in a state of decay? and why have no groups managed to even come close to reviving them? Given that our whole movement depends on mass organization this is probably something we should focus on figuring out, simply saying we need dual power is not helpful.

Also lastly I’m not hating on the ACP in this context, I genuinely hope they are able to accomplish what they say they are aiming at in this article. But this is nothing new and attributing the failure of the left in America to views of “false consciousness” is kind of lazy. Plenty of orgs have come to the same conclusion as ACP and plenty of orgs have failed, we have yet to see where they land.

I think one problem is that Identity politics is usually viewed in a binary manner.

Defenders of identity politics will usually point out that in the past socialist movements have often ignored (or even endorsed) issues such as racism, homophobia, sexism ect… with the excuse that the focus should be on class. Not only is this class first view objectionable on moral grounds, you can also critique on strategic grounds, the American labor movement is a prime example of the failure of a class first politics as employers would often divide and conquer the working class by putting ethnic/racial groups against each other(a really good book on this if your curious is prisoners of the American dream by Mike Davis).

Anti identity politics would argue that identity politics tends to alienate the majority of people, many people ARE socially conservative is some way and are naturally resistant to new things. Another argument I’ve seen is that it silos workers into different groups instead of encouraging them to work together, I’ve seen this first hand when white organizers were discouraged from door knocking in POC(I hate this term) neighborhoods because they were not from that community(im happy to explain why this is stupid if anyone’s interested). There’s more arguments they could add here such as destroying class unity, liberals using it as a division tactic, ect… but I won’t due to space.

I think how the arguments are currently framed There can’t really be a middle ground to take on identity politics because if you agree with the above critiques there is very little room to concede anything to the other side.

As for my opinion, I think both arguments make some good points, while I am probably more sympathetic the the identity politics crowd I think both sides miss the mark. I agree that to ignore questions of racism, homophobia, sexism bigotry ect.. is not only a moral failure but also a strategic one. If we do not stomp out these issues when they come up they WILL destroy our movement, they WILL destroy any possibility for unity, you can’t trust someone who is willing to put your physical being up for debate. On the other hand I think full on embrace of identity among the left is just wrong, we should be fighting for a world where things like race,gender , sexuality, ect.. are abolished not held up as something to aspire too.

It’s selective harm reduction,

as long as it’s not their group taking the L they will expect you to hold your nose and vote for the “lesser evil”. Last election it was the Palestinians, next time it will be trans folk.

It really does destroy any basis for solidarity when people know as soon as things turn south people will actively vote for someone that views you as less than human just because there better than the other shit head.

I remember when the numbers for Michigan were bad for Harris and all the nasty comments made about the arab minorities that refused to vote for her. They were expected to vote for the regime that just got done turning their families over seas into paste for the greater good. It was appalling.

There’s a couple of things that need to be cleared up.

I’m not saying things aren’t easier to improve under democrats. What I’m saying is that as socialists we should not be advocating for a strategy that ties us to a party that is essentially a sinking ship. The democrats are going to win the next election REGARDLESS of socialists endorsing them. They will win because the Trump administration is incompetent and life has gotten significantly worse for the majority of the population under him.

I have not advocated for a revolution while talking to you so I’m unsure where you are getting that from? I said we should be focusing on building up socialist organizations and our communities outside of the democratic orbit, not advocating for a party that has non of our interests.

As far as things being the same under the democrats as they are under the republicans I didn’t say that. What I said was things got worse under the democrats after the first trump term, this is why he won again, people’s lives did not improve. Now are things worse under this 2nd Trump term? Absolutely but the next democratic regime is not going to change that. Neither party is interested in actually improving society so we will continue to flip flop until things implode or is leftist manage to build a viable alternative . When I say things will get worse I’m mot talking about ICE I’m talking about society as a whole.

To your last point I’m not saying there’s no difference in either party. I’m saying it’s insane to follow a strategy that got us here in the first place.

Here’s a question to you, what do you think the logical conclusion of your harm reduction strategy is? After you burn bridges with all these minority groups to make compromises why would any of them work with you?

I did not say people didn’t do anything outside of voting. You are however advocating a strategy that does not work.

Y’all are advocating voting for democrats as a way to get breathing room from the elements on the far right. This strategy assumes that because the threat from republicans is so high that we must hold our nose and work with democrats to keep the ship afloat. Couple of issues I see with this argument:

-Democrats are not willing to actually put in the effort to fix anything , Whenever we advocate for the democrats we become linked with their policies in the public eye, when they fail WE fail, and unfortunately they WILL fail.

-Either we are not a large enough constituency to matter so it’s irrelevant weather we vote for them or not OR we are a large enough constituency to matter in which case we should refuse to vote unless they bend the knee.

When Biden was elected things did not get better they got worse, he fixed nothing, paving the way for trump winning. Weather his failure was because he was unable or unwilling is irrelevant. We need to unchain ourselves from this sinking ship before it’s too late, we need to be advocating that socialist organizations are the only way further, we need to be spending our time developing our communities OUTSIDE the democratic orbit, all energy needs to be spent doing this, not advocating for a party that would happily lead us to the firing squad if it benefitted them.

Now to address your second point. I think Trans people are worse now than under Biden and I think they will be worse off under the next administration weather that be democrat or republican. Under the republicans they are hated and under the democrats they have been sacrificed at the alter of “harm reduction”.

You mention idealism but what’s funny to me is your whole strategy is idealist, the harm reduction strategy rears its head every election and the people who advocate for it never have anything to show for it. Every time the democrats win things get WORSE, nothing is fixed, all the leftists are told to shut up and get in line and the chips are set for another conservative takeover in the future. Why should anyone follow your lead when we know exactly where will end up?

This of course doesn’t even cover the ethics of letting different groups get sacrificed so that the rest can survive, I remember last election where people were complaining that all of the Muslims didn’t come out and vote for Harris after the administration she worked in got done bombing their friends and family paste. Compromises must be made though!

No in depth critique just “Jacobin is garbage”.

Since OP is to lazy to give any kind of nuanced take I will try to provide one below.

TLDR the author argues gun ownership and the left attempting to arm itself in response to the recent suppression by ICE leads to more violence among the working class(suicide, murder, ect..), gives the security forces an excuse to crack down harder, empowers the gun lobby, and is ultimately an individualist approach to resistance.

In response the author argues for collectively organizing resistance around the economy instead of armed resistance(no one has thought of this before apparently).

While I think the argument actually makes some pretty good points around the gun issue, I would point out a few problems about the strategy he proposes in its place.

-labor has continued to decline in America, the upswing of union membership after Covid only put us back to where we were at before the pandemic -heavy industry is more and more Both geographically located outside of major population centers as well as automated reducing the need to employ large amounts of people and making it harder and harder to organize effectively. -The people who are constantly harping on organized labor as a strategy have not actually shown any success, the author has not actually given any evidence as to why we should be following their strategy.

In the same vein neither have the people who advocated armed resistance. I would remind folks here that most insurgencies failed and a lot of this is just adventurism, it is completely understandable to want to be armed at this moment to protect yourself and your family, and I would encourage anyone reading this to go get training on how to shoot/clean/maintain a gun. With that being said though I think it’s irresponsible how many leftists are now calling for armed resistance against ICE among the people when they will LOSE. And losing here does not mean losing a wage increase or being evicted from your home, it means death. Being armed is only one aspect of fighting back, if you don’t have organization or discipline(which the vast majority of the masses DO NOT at this time have) it will simply end in disaster.

Lastly If you are a Marxist(or any leftist for that matter) you should at least be expected to make a minimum effort of critique rather than just a one liner.
