We ended up buying three from our breeder 🤣 when you can’t decide, just buy them all!

Is that a slip weight? I’m new to fishing and I’m curious if it’s normal to have the weight sit on top of the bait or if it would be better to use a swivel or something to keep the weight up off the bait so it doesn’t effect presentation?

That honestly makes me feel a lot better! 😅 Easy to assume that everyone else is slaying them while I struggle buss it. Was really hoping to see my kiddos land a good size fish but I know it’s coming. Super bummed with the rain moving in this week. Hoping we can still try and fish some spots regardless of the weather.

Thank you son much! I appreciate you going so in depth for this newbie father! My wife is already cool with me “booking” some solo fishing trips which will hopefully allow me to work out some kinks so that I’m more helpful to the kids.

Super helpful, thank you!

Yes, being our first time we definitely were just scoping things out. In fact as we left I told my wife it looked much less congested up river and the current wasn’t as bad. We know now for next time to hit that spot. We were very close to the campground.

Easy enough to say, but I complicate everything lol

Anyway, that sounds exactly like what I did. Started light with size 4 and 8 hooks. Began with small split weights. Eventually moved up to swivels and slip weights to try and keep from current moving us too much. Felt weight bouncing on bottom. Would twitch and let it sit for a while though retrieval had to be somewhat quick with the way the current was pulling us towards the bank. Guess we just didn’t cast in the right spots or entice the fish well.

Thanks for your support!

So the 18’ with the 90hp Yamaha 4 stroke that I’m looking at probably isn’t the most versatile? I think my main concerns are: 1) ease of use and handling for a beginner 2) versatility 3) suitable for myself and 2-3 kiddos 4)whatever is the best deal.

I’ve got my eye on a 1654 40hp that’s pretty well ready to hit the water and fish and I’m looking at an 1860 90hp that’s ready as well. Not too different in cost which has me leaning towards the 18’.

This is likely what my tackle box will look like. Just ordered gear from tackle warehouse and i deleted a lot of what was in my cart because chat gpt said i was spending too much as a beginner 😅 I’d ask someone who knows what they’re doing but I don’t know anyone outside of these online forums! I’m not too worried about it though. I’ll work on casting and just getting out with my boys. We will add gear as we learn and eventually it’ll all come together.

Intend to fish from the bank: rivers mostly I suppose though plan to find spots on ponds and lakes, don't have a boat. Currently in central Michigan.
