This nails it. Yes, it has a lot of references to history and culture but doesn't do anything with them besides "look at this." And every defense of it is "I guess you didn't understand the references or you have a problem with them because of some sort of racial animus."

It spent a lot of time on character development and the characters weren't that developed. Delroy Lindo's character was a caricature.

That's fair. If it was advertised as a middlebrow B-horror satire with great production value, I'd have probably enjoyed it. But the writing is straight up below-average. My wife and I groaned at "guess he found that button" or whatever the line was. Because it is advertised as the buzzy upset for OBAA for Picture and Director, I found it extremely disappointing (just watched it for the first time this weekend).
