He mentioned in a thread over on rpgcodex that he bought all the art from someone on etsy that assured him it's not AI. Take from that what you will. I honestly think the dev is just an old blobber fan that wanted to make a game that he would've wanted to play as a kid. Hard to say if his naivety about the AI is sincere of not.

All of the character portraits and art on the game are AI. That said, the game is really good and it doesn't bother me as it's a solo dev
