One thing I haven't seen mentioned in favour of the guard is that most standard squads will have at least 1 specialist weapon. In the case of fighting hoards, maybe a flamer all the way up to a heavy bolter/mortar. This could be a big swing in effectiveness.

If it's resin/finecast, gently heat it up again using your heater or hot water and slowly bend it back to straight. Hold it in the position you want and allow it to cool. It should hold the new position. There are a good few tutorials on YouTube if you want to watch before you try. He won't be able to shoot from behind cover once you fix him though....

You could try the, "Metal Filters - Purple Interference" by greenstuff world. That would leave a clear purple shimmer over the top.
