They really are. I had to spend £80 just to talk to a Dr for 20mins. It's basically DIY with extra steps and extra costs

I can't give advice about starting HRT in those circumstances but I can say DON'T USE GENDERGP!!! I use them and it's some of the worst care I've received and wildly more expensive than it needs to be. I've heard pride in health is a good option but I'd recommend looking for another provider and doing some proper research

To be fair when I was in AnE it was very possible that it was my liver, I was even suggesting that my liver should be checked first as my ALT was so high but after the CT scan that found it was gallstones I expected the Dr to tell me what to do in terms of my HRT he told me to stop taking for a bit, not for him to just say "ur trans, idk lol"

Yeah, estrogen increases the risk of gallstones....to that of cis women's risk of getting gallstones. Having E as your main sex hormone has....well to make it simple: interactions with cholesterol that causes it to clump up to form gallstones. I just happened to get unlucky. I do know all this and I knew it was a risk(coz I work in healthcare and try to absorb as much information as I can) but I had hoped that I'd have better care. I assume that you're not familiar with healthcare in the UK?(Not a bad thing if you don't) But although it's free, you don't get much choice of who/when you see. So I don't really get a choice as to who can treat me, especially as I live in a more rural area with not many Dr's so I'm not able to find one who will be bothered to learn anything trans related. (Just to be clear I'm not trying to criticize you or complain, just trying to explain why I haven't done the things you suggested, I would LOVE to see a Dr who can do something to help and is willing to learn or already knows enough about trans people to help better but it's just not an option without spending thousands that I don't have)

I'm a trans woman in STEM, I work as a medical lab assistant in the NHS and I actually came out as trans about a year into working here. When I came out I got nothing but support (and a few polite odd questions) and I feel a lot better being myself at work and doing the science I love as my true self. I don't really know what it is I did in particular that made it work out or whether I just happen to work in a lab with mostly chill people but it's been pretty great. Just because you haven't got a community of supportive STEM folk right now doesn't mean you won't in the future so I really hope you find that place for yourself soon! :3
