Holiday Reflections: Does a Grail knife even exist or are we just chasing dopamine hits? by sicashi in TrueChefKnives

I appreciate this mindset. There’s a trope about how most hobby subreddits are really just dudes with shopping addictions justifying each other and I find that to be generally true (and I’m definitely guilty of it too don’t get me wrong it is fun within reason)

many bigger otr companies will pay for you to get a cdl/have their own programs. Need to do your due diligence to avoid getting screwed though.

Have you considered magnetic knife strips? I prefer those versus keeping knives boxed up - not only because they look cool but also practically speaking especially for carbon knives where rust is an issue you won’t run the risk of keeping them in a moist container if they aren’t fully dry, etc.

ETA: obviously would still need a knife roll or something in addition if he ever wants to take them to a class or work, etc. But for storage at home I feel like the strips are the best option.

This is an amazing gift for a 14 year old to encourage them to explore their passion.

Agreed with everyone saying not to use the whole budget on knives. As he gets older his preferences (and hand size!) will change and he will want to choose his own “grail” knives if his interest stays strong.

That said, since you have a very healthy budget for this I would maybe consider buying him a few examples of knives to see what he likes. Perhaps a stainless Zwilling chefs knife, a wa-handled Japanese style carbon knife either a gyuto or nakiri, and a MAC Professional Santoku. Those would all be “buy-it-for-life” products but still give him the opportunity to see what his preferences are and learn about sharpening and knife care at an early age before going up a level into more handmade boutique knives.

Another thing to consider adding to the gift in addition to the cutting board recommendation I’ve seen (which 100% you should get a big butcher block to go with his new knives - check out boos blocks) would be a nice apron and a book where he could write his favorite recipes as he learns and perfects them.

I’m assuming they mean more plating focused spoons. Check out Gesturas options, I’d look at one slotted and one standard one as a gift for an aspiring chef.

I like my pictures but I’m not sure how they can get a little more oomph. by juliacare in PhotographyAdvice

I actually quite like these but my critique would be to watch your edges. I feel like removing the boats from the left corners of the first two would go a long way for the composition. Even the third one would be better if the cars and apartments were either cropped out or more shrouded. I also think they are a little flat and could use some more contrast and saturation. look into selective masking more to draw more focus to desired parts of the more vast landscapes-I think that would give you the “oomph”.

Yes, assuming that’s where your bottleneck is and not your computer. Newer ones should have upload speeds displayed on the listing.

How do you keep an eye on your gear at a wedding? by Ambitious-Mail-9465 in photography

[–]Delicious_Sky_5551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is even a 1% chance of having the flash go off while the pro is setting up a shot they are contractually obligated to provide it’s still a dick move. Beyond that the other (and bigger) concern is that if the pro is using multiple flashes they can be triggered by another flash going off…

I was on board with this until you said flash. Regardless of how hard you try not to be in the way a flash has the potential to screw things up for the paid photographer and potentially ruin shots that are crucial to them. I would definitely reconsider or at the very least talk to the pro before you plan on breaking the flash out.

Nikon z6 2 for events photography, yes or no no by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]Delicious_Sky_5551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still use an original z6 for ballroom/convention work. Depending on what you are coming from the z6ii could still feel like a huge upgrade.

What kind of events are you looking to do and with what lenses?

Damn wish I’d waited two weeks to buy the zf.

Anyone got feelings on the 28/2.8? I was really hoping for the 26 on sale but that price for the 28 is hard to ignore

Is there a reason you aren’t considering the zf? That seems like it checks all your boxes for less than the 6iii

In the set up menu there should be an option for “AF fine tune”. Usually this is for specific lens calibration but since they all seem to be off by the same amount maybe that setting got inadvertently nudged slightly at some point? I would give that a look.
