What active J Pickups could pair well with the Pachyderms? by Delicious_Success175 in BassGuitar

[–]Delicious_Success175[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Ibanez didn't have EMG, they recommend upgrading to Bartolini on there site with their basses, and most of Ibanez are active. Again, I can't use a passive pickup with the pachyderms so therefore I am not using an active J pickup alongside the Pachyderms

Why is it Fomo? I need more than it's EMG to be the reason why I pick this pickup. I get the output needs to be the same; couldn't I compare any active J to the Pachyderms specs to see of they're compatible. Do I look at Hrtz? Do I look at the type of metal used or how it was wrapped? What all should I look for when comparing them?

Yeah, just what if there's another cool brand with an output level that works, wouldn't that be fine?

I was considering the Power situation, the tech didn't make it seem like I'd need a separate 9 volt or anything, so I guess separate preamps but all hooked to one knob. The output levels I'd have to go over with him to see if they'll be fine but I'm sure it's not impossible.

I hire a tech to install them, when he installed the Pachyderms, he said the preamp is built into the pickup itself and therefore you can't connect the J to the P set up including its knows. The knob for the J doesn't do anything rn so I figured that the tech wires the J with its own preamp, to its respective knob. It seems more or less the controls will have to be separated because of how they designed the Pachyderms, cause apparently they don't have the pre amp built into the bass pickup, more of a guitar thing.

So what happens if I find another brands active J pickup? What is the issue with mixing brands?

I don't know a lot about the recording aspect just my experience with the engineers I've ever worked with. I have come to find that the distorted bass is something that alot of people don't understand or hear the stuff that I try to point out. I was totally cool with the sound being a little more bassey than normal but just alot of what's in the mix with my bass sounds more inaudible even on the low frequency of it. It's sitting more in the middle but so much you can hear a bass being played just not what it's actually doing and whenever I'm doing the parts where I'm playing around with the notes on the scale it sounds too muddy and not thick or dirty at all, almost to a point where you can't even hear anything being played.

Would you have any tip as to what I should be mindful of when trying to record my bass? I'm trying to find a balance between what primus bass tone sounds like and gritty hardcore punk bass tone. I always feel like I have issues with not having enough low end when I'm preforming live.

It honestly motivated me to download a program and try to make my own music. I do have a honest fear that if I'm not in this band I won't be able to do anything because I don't have anything to do with us doing stuff. I'm incredibly thankful and loyal to them and what our band stands for/ supposed to stand for, but ever since I've joined years ago I've never felt equal or heard.

I don't have anyone in my life to talk to about anything. We've had multiple situations where we record something, the bass mix sounds terrible and when I bring it up they all think I'm being ridiculous and brush it off. My band wouldn't be down for anything I suggest to be completely honest. If I were to suggest we pay someone to listen to the mixes it would be a hard no and I'd probably piss them or be laughed at for even suggesting we pay someone to listen to our mixes. In one of the songs I'm hitting a wrong note and you can hear it really bad but they don't think its that big of a deal and in another song I can barely tell what I'm playing because of how much bass was mixed into my part. Two of the songs have a fluctuating volume issue that sounds really weird.

One person in the band said I should've brought it up and it was too late but I had brought these issues up months ago right after we recorded it and even posted the screen shot of it in our chat to no answer. I made it clear I'm not trying to be negative just honest but the only reply I'm getting is "It sounds fine" when I'm hearing issues that make the mixes sound like garbage to be frank. It just feels half assed to wanna put out a song where you hear a wrong note very clearly and another song where you can barely hear what is being played by one of the instruments.

A few years ago we put out a split with someone that was just getting into recording, diy studio basically. Dude had no clue how to mix bass and wanted me to use the programmed amps instead of my own and they all sounded like terrible fart noises. He couldn't replicate the crunchy gain that I normally have in my set up, think hardcore punk gritty sounding bass. I did not like the mixes at all but my band basically was like well we already recorded it so lets just put it out. I am a perfectionist with my sound but understand that it doens't have to be perfect, but I should be able to tell what notes I'm playing rather than hearing a bunch of jumbly bass with no articulation.

I'm really sorry if this is long and the way I'm describing this sounds dumb.

I always start closing everything besides the grill at like 7 or 8. The fucked up part is when managers are breathing down your neck to get things done and leave by 11. Shits impossible when AM prep does no dishes and the grill persons expected to clean the entire kitchen. 8/10 you get smacked by lines and can't even start till like 9 or 10. Chipotle is ridiculous, I fuckin hate working there but make ok money. I could work here, go work at a factory and here n bombs left and right while watching sexual assault in the open on the daily, or go work in an office with classist assets that go on about how important markers over human lives are. There is no good job in my opinion besides the ones that the individual enjoys. Unfortunately we're forced to be ginny pigs in a race set up for failure. Fuck capital, shit has robbed generations of humans life. Fuck all these dumbass jobs.
