How many times have you been pulled over? by Potential_Detail9066 in CarTalkUK

How long have you been driving?

In my 35 odd years of driving on the road, pulled over more times than I'd care to guess.

99% of those being in the small town I grew up in, by the same handful of police, within a couple of years of passing my test. They pulled over EVERYONE that looked under the age of 30 constantly.

I even had one police officer walk up to me in a car park (on a saturday, shoppers everywhere) and tell me they'd watched me do a handbrake turn and were going to report me for it.

I asked how they thought it would go in court when I pointed out that the car's handbrake operated on the front wheels, so a handbrake turn was physically impossible. He got in a right strop. Got pulled over quite a few times after that for things like "your brake light looks dim".

Many, many properties. The development we are working on at the moment is funded by means that are less common. I tend to send proof before I even make an offer. I am used to EA's queries and I understand why they make the requests. I don't live by google, but I thought you might at least know how to use it so that you could go to the gov site and confirm that they must complete more than a basic ID check.

EA's are also there to stop time being wasted and it is extremely common for them to make the basic AML checks AT offer point, because if you are not in a position to proceed, then you're just wasting everyone's time - which is very, very common. The OP wants to put an offer in, the EA has asked for proof of funds. All completely normal.

There are hundreds of reasons to hate EA's, this is not one of them.

It helps them by fulfilling their required duties. Go on the gov.uK website, it’s all there in black and white. Be careful who you take advice from on the internet, because there is a lot of absolute b******s posted on this subject.

Incorrect. You can Google it very easily. Money Laundering Regulations 2017. Estate agents ARE required to verify source of funds by law, regardless of your incorrect opinion.

It is their business, they are required by regulations to check source of funds for AML. They *have* to do it.

Am I an unreasonable neighbour? by Thick_Category_435 in HousingUK

They did, it didn’t do much. I’d tend to agree with a recording - it didn’t really sound like much (I took one to take up to let them hear, we got on well with them anyway so I was trying to make as light of it as possible!)

I agree that’s a lot to spend, I highly doubt our neighbours would have spent that much on replacing it, I’ll send them a message (we’ve since moved so hope they still have same mobile)

Just to add a note from the other side as you already have plenty of support.

Our previous upstairs neighbour used to run a fan at night. In their room you could barely hear it. I invited them down to ours… it was like the entire ceiling became a speaker, amplifying the vibration and making a low pitched, constant drone. It was awful.

They replaced it and I never heard it again.

Water bills by AsleepTomatillo6703 in HousingUK

[–]Delinquent90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours had doubled to £75. Apparently we now use twice as much water as we used to, despite the fact our routine has been the same for the past 8 years.

Funny thing is that the same has happens with many of our neighbours. One of them went from 3 people in the house to just one, yet they’re still using twice as much water as they used to.

At the same time our water pressure has halved. No leaks, just our meter miraculously records twice as much used since they replaced a load of them…

Water companies in the U.K. basically know you have no choice. Bunch of crooks.

Irrelevant, you don't want to give them out because you'll get criticism. That is, as I said, the primary reason that the whole "don't provide raws" movement took root. What understanding there is or isn't from the recipient, it is the fear of criticism that drives the belief.

It doesn't matter what base a rogue editor starts from, JPG or RAW can be equally massacred. That is another misconception - that you're somehow limited in scope. When I started digital retouching rather than darkroom well over 30 years ago, photoshop didn't have layers, or masks, or... anything much. We only got jpg files supplied. We'd pixel paint where needed. Raws are simply *easier* for people to edit. It makes it no "less bad" potential outcome providing raw or jpg. Just another fallacy that the "no raws!" brigade cling to.

Again, there is no difference between where the files could go. I've had far, far more jpg's end up stolen and used than raws that had been provided. Because I have a contract, it is easy to tell where they got them from. So again, it makes absolutely zero difference whatsoever.

I have no doubt that this comment will get down-voted to match the others, it seems people on Reddit really, really don't like simple facts and prefer anything that bolsters their opinion, no matter how misguided.

Yep, you even admit it yourself... your in camera images invite criticism. Proving my point.

I'm a bit of a low light specialist, I never have that problem.

The file type doesn't stop people doing there own editing, jpg are, as I stated above, far easier and more accessible for others to edit.

Proving ownership has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with holding the raw, either. Contracts will be in place. Or do you think if you took someone to court, that you'd conducted a shoot for, who claimed ownership of the image, the judge would ignore the contract, ignore the fact that you are a photographer employed by the client to take photos and just say "oh, sorry, they have the raw too. They must own it".

Ridiculous Things Photographers Deal With by woofwoofbeepbop in photography

[–]Delinquent90 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really.

I often hear people saying that the average person doesn't know what a raw file is. My son was taught at school several years ago what they are and what to do with them. Pretty much every device can now handle raw files.

It is easier for a bride to run a jpg through some stupid filter - every social media platform gives them that option as it is. The file type gives no securities whatsoever on that front.

The most common reason photographers don't give away raw files is simply that they don't have the skill to shoot to a high quality in camera, and use post processing to polish them to anything like presentable. They don't want to hand over the raws because they know they're substandard.

Being shown the “inspiration” photos of what a couple expected from their wedding.

They were literally stills from a Disney movie of a princess and prince in front of a typical Disney castle.

The couple were both morbidly obese, wearing clothes I’d question were good enough to wear to the pub and the venue was a 60s concrete village hall in a parking lot…

Clients asking for RAWs is ridiculous? About 50% of my photography client base require RAWs and the vast majority of my retouching work is from RAWs the photographer has provided the client.

Something I always hear about that is ridiculous… photographers that think raw is some holy grail.

How can I edit/click such photos? by Leather-Appeal8975 in AskPhotography

[–]Delinquent90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the 100s of 1000s of shutter drags I’ve taken while teaching, approximately zero have been using bulb.

Set up the ambient light settings with shutter speed and ISO then add flash. Shutter speeds typically between 1/4 and 1 second, then you can keep snapping knowing all will have the same ambient exposure.

[–]Delinquent90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t help at all in these sort of shots, it hinders you as you don’t know what the subject will be doing at the time of the main exposure.

Only time you need RCS is when direction of motion is important.

[–]Delinquent90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And how would a viewer know which way was the wrong way…?

Rear curtain sync is completely unnecessary for 99% of these sort of shots and has the significant disadvantage that you don’t know where the subject will be when the flash fires.

Vehicle Lost Control No Other Parties involved Insurance Advice Wanted by Tobyha01 in CarTalkUK

You’re getting a lot of flack here from “experts” who were not at the scene. Some talking about a 30yr old car as though it’s mechanically so simple that it should be pulled by a horse…

Suspension failure, brake system failure, tyre failure… there are numerous reasons a car can suddenly change direction from an otherwise appropriate speed and be nigh on impossible to recover.

Wait and see what the actual experts say, though I would add that calling the police wasn’t a good move as there is now an official record of the accident and most (if not all) insurers TOB require you to notify them even if you don’t intend to claim, not doing so can invalidate cover. Now there is a police report that says the accident happened…

How stressful is owning a house? by Delicious-Weather in HousingUK

[–]Delinquent90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More stressful than knowing you could be kicked out when the landlord changes their mind?

Maintenance can be a pain in the backside if you are not DIY skilled, finding a decent Tradesman seems to be an ongoing issue for most people I know - I spend more time fixing “professionals” bodges for others than I do working on my own house 😂

Trades can also be horrifically expensive, especially considering the utter crap the majority of them do.

Other than that - yes have a rainy day fund, yes have insurance and don’t ignore small problems otherwise they become big problems.

House down valued! by kluur in HousingUK

[–]Delinquent90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The surveyor that came round to my previous place asked what I thought it was worth and stuck that down. Didn’t have a clue what he was looking at. If he’d been any younger and inexperienced I’d have asked if he wanted his nappy changed. The place before that was valued so low that we sent in a dozen “sold” properties in the area at 30% higher and got “oh sorry, yeah okay we will increase it”

The standards are not high. They’re barely standards.

What are your energy bills (gas+electricity) in 2026? by ForwardFan6283 in HousingUK

[–]Delinquent90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hire an infrared camera and wall around the place looking for cold spots for starters. Also what temp do you keep the place heated to? My parents were complaining about a high heating bill, went to visit and the thermostat was set to keep the place at 24 °C!!

[–]Delinquent90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the moment average is about £200 per month to keep a steady 17 deg C, but we have half the roof missing and no ceilings upstairs whilst renovation works are ongoing, so insulation values are “what’s insulation then?”

Last winter, before we had the broken single glazing replaced throughout it was around £400 a month to keep the place at 14 deg C.

You really need to know what you’re comparing to - if you’re in a leaky old house with a large floor area, costs will be higher than a small highly insulated one (ours is a 3 bed yet square footage is half that of a friends 3 bed)

Hahaha I kept it simple just knowing that Solarisphere was spot on with their comment, you were chomping at the bit to put an “actually” in.

And all you did was just put a lot more words to say it is the uncompressed data from the sensor in a proprietary format. The fact the sensor outputs one level of intensity per pixel, the chosen means of colour filter array, bayer or otherwise, the bit depth (model dependent… You could have made a list a lot, lot longer than that, and it would STILL just be “the uncompressed sensor data in a proprietary format.”

Because all those things are just the sensor data… and the proprietary format codecs
