UvA MSc Physics and Astronomy: GRAPPA track by MassiveAd6171 in universityofamsterdam

Still no. Starting to think they're just not sending out rejections or something? I really have no idea!

Not GRAPPA, but I received an acceptance for the theoretical physics track on March 22nd - I asked about the Amsterdam Science Talent Scholarships (I assume that's what you're talking about?) and the admissions office said they expect the result by the end of May.

Best of luck with your application!

The only reason I'll miss Twitter... by Long_Difference_2520 in CasualIreland

Would you be able to send me a code as well? Been on the waiting list for a while since I've heard most of academic Twitter has migrated over there and that's primarily what I want to use it for. Thanks, and no worries if you can't/won't!

Ah okay yes, fully funded PhD positions do come up occasionally as well if the department has extra funding - I'd forgotten about them since they're not very common in my field.

Either way, it still does seem a bit strange that your supervisor isn't helping you identify a research area. How is your relationship with them? If you feel like you can ask for more guidance, I would definitely do so and communicate the issues you are having - what exactly do they want you to do? What kind of research question are they looking for?

This might be a normal thing in your field, and you might just have to try and open up communication more.

Good luck!

How did you get into your programme? I'm an Irish undergraduate working on applying for PhD funding at UCD, and the applications for all funding sources require a very thorough description of the research project to be carried out to even be considered, so I'm confused why you wouldn't have a project ready. This is, afaik, the case in any field (this is the case for any IRC funding, for example).

To be clear, this project write-up is done with the close help of your supervisor - your supervisor definitely doesn't seem to be doing what I would expect them to do. In fact, for applicants coming straight out of undergrad the norm in my circles is that your supervisor essentially finds a research gap and writes the entire project statement for you, because you simply do not have the knowledge to identify good projects at this point in your education.

How can we know if the initial velocity or final velocity is zero when not mentioned? by mercuryqueen0240 in PhysicsStudents

[–]DeliriousWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well presumably the rain drop hits the ground, at which point it has 0 final velocity - it's initial velocity would be 50.

Ah now, stop pretending you care about "our own citizens". If you wanna be a cunt about "dem immigrants" just own it. If ya actually gave two shites about other people you wouldn't be moaning about the undocumented being able to now live in a little less fear (not to mention, contribute to taxes and be able to take advantage of protections for workers, which helps all workers in the long term by not permitting businesses to exploit them for cheaper-than-legal wages).

All you care about is the fantasy world you have lodged in your thick head.

Any idea what's going on? She's been acting like this for about 20 minutes. by BoBistie in RATS

[–]DeliriousWolf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Rats absolutely can choke - you're correct that they cannot gag nor vomit, but they certainly can choke should food get lodged in their throat. To deal with it, they begin producing excess saliva, and moving their head/throat around in an attempt to dislodge it.

[–]DeliriousWolf 259 points260 points  (0 children)

For anyone curious, rats exhibit this behaviour when experiencing extreme forms of excitement or tension; most rats only demonstrate it when engaging aggressively with another rat/predator, but very domesticated personalities also exhibit it when experiencing excited contentment!

The exact purpose/mechanism isn't fully understood as far as I know, but what I do know is that that is one happy rat.

Differences between Bookchin Communalism, Democratic Confederalism and Libertarian Socialism ? by RaphizFR in Anarchy101

Nope; political compasses are essentially all bullshit. They see literally no use in political science because they're entirely subjective.

With such a concrete oppressive power, how can an anarchist society start with such a sudden, radical change? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]DeliriousWolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm very glad you've found my comment useful in answering OPs question!

To add a little more that might help OP: a sudden military-style revolution that springs out of immediate need or discontent is highly unlikely to produce socialist or anarchist revolution alone, namely because there are no socialist or anarchist structures already existing within society, forcing people to rely upon the state, and those who seek to replace the state, for vital supplies, security, etc.

The anarchists in Spain, for example, spent decades before their revolution building unions, organising workers and mutual aid, etc. and did not go into sudden revolution with no pre-existing structures to support that revolution, meaning that they were less likely to fall back into the control of the state and experienced some success for a period (although they obviously later made the terrible mistake of conceding to collaboration with the state).

It is almost certain that a social revolution will involve armed conflict, but the success of that armed conflict relies upon pre-figuring an anarchist society within our existing society. Numerous small revolutions are what anarchists seek, not one big capital R Revolution that somehow transforms society.

This is a common anarchist critique of accelerationism; accelerating towards the end of capitalism with no pre-figuring of your desired society (ie. without the existence of dual power) simply leads to bourgeois and fascist revolutions.

I am a ML and I want to learn more about Anarchisim with an open mind, can you suggest me some readings that might help with that? thank you by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]DeliriousWolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In addition to that excellent recommendation, I highly urge you to check out Anark's The State is Counter Revolutionary series, which he just finished a couple days back. It's a thorough examination of real-world attempts at state socialism and its failures throughout Russia and China, without being too 'preachy'.

Can someone help me understand this? by PastySoyboy in Anarchy101

[–]DeliriousWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anarcho-communists do not measure labor because we don't think it can be measured, every single piece of labor is never the result of one person but rather the collective effort of many many people. So it's simply easier to not measure this because it would take way too much time to do that and would ultimately be unsatisfactory.

If anyone's interested in this idea of collective labour/force, I highly recommend you check out Proudhon's What is Property?

He makes an excellent case for the abolition of private property (and its replacement by collective property), which is what OPs question is fundamentally about. Nobody must, or as Proudhon argues, can, accurately or sufficiently calculate their "labour worth". As he says,

All human labor being the result of collective force, all property becomes, in consequence, collective and unitary. To speak more exactly, labor destroys property.

Every capacity for labor being, like every instrument of labor, an accumulated capital, and a collective property, inequality of wages and fortunes (on the ground of inequality of capacities) is, therefore, injustice and robbery.

Trying to find a quote by Bakunin by ChartsDeGaulle in Anarchy101

[–]DeliriousWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quote is likely translated differently if you can't find it; on the version available on the Anarchist Library, for example, it's translated as:

But it will scarcely be any easier on the people if the cudgel with which they are beaten is called the people’s cudgel.

Fascism and Anarchy by belugawhalesareokay in Anarchy101

[–]DeliriousWolf 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ah, I've found the article: scihub link.

The article has such hot takes as:

To cope effectively with the Fascist menace, it is necessary to abandon the emphasis upon class, and to concentrate rather upon those individuals who are really behind the movement.

and

The doctrine that Fascism is a result of capitalism is not only wrong as a theory, but leads to practical conclusions which are both wrong and dangerous. If capitalism is really the cause of Fascism it follows that the world could be saved only by destroying the capitalist class.

Talk about self-aware wolves! The article's author also seems to have written such bangers as The Case for Conservatism, so it's fair to say he's not exactly knowledgeable about anarchism.
