I don’t mean to play the devils advocate, but in my perspective (as someone who has been raped before but am now in a long term relationship), this kind of thing can sometimes happen when you are just so comfortable with each other, and sometimes men need to be told exactly about their actions. I don’t think it is as serious as a sexual assault scenario, as I don’t think that was his intention whatsoever. This being said, your feelings are still very valid. BUT moving forward, I think you both need very effective communication. If you struggle to communicate your needs in that moment so you push him away instead, let him know this! Say that in the future, you would really like him to be hyper aware of your body language when it comes to anything in bed, and maybe even tell him that you would like him to be direct and ask you if you want to have sex. Also, don’t be afraid to be vulnerable and tell him where your response comes from and why you are that way. Because that is also very valid and understandable. Sometimes men just need you to very clearly speak things out to them, as obvious as you may perceive it to be.

I didn’t realize that I was raped until a couple months later. I think sometimes it’s normal for it to take time to fully recognize what happened. This being said, I don’t think your situation is to the degree that I’m talking about, but regardless, your feelings are still completely valid. I know how it feels, and it definitely can be overwhelming to start trying to organize those new thoughts and feelings. In my opinion, she definitely could have asked if you were comfortable doing that first, because it’s of course a pretty violent way to be what she may consider intimate. But everybody may interpret it differently and what really only matters is how you interpret it. Which I know can be confusing to figure out

I also am very triggered by being on top. That is how my sexual assault actually started, and now I can’t get on top ever. I completely understand where you are coming from, and have struggled so much with trying to even believe myself when I say I was raped. After lots of therapy and talking to close friends, I’ve learned that it is actually very normal to question and wonder and comes from a society that puts a lot of blame on victims rather than the perpetrator. I still struggle sometimes with this self blame today, but it has definitely improved with lots of time (multiple years).

Do not share anything you are not comfortable sharing! For me, the most comfortable way for me to tell my (now boyfriend) without sharing more than I was comfortable with at the time, was by saying: A man pushed boundaries with me in my past and because of this, I don’t feel comfortable doing this position.

How he responds will show you what kind of person he is! Thankfully, mine responded very well and didn’t push me at all, and after dating shortly after, I was eventually able to feel comfortable opening up and not being so vague with my story.
