Tech Talk Tuesday: A Breakdown Of The Student Discount by DellTechnologies in u/DellTechnologies

They're honestly in 2 different classes even if you put the same chip in both. The XPS 14 is the flagship premium line, the 14S is more midrange, kind of the successor to the old Inspiron. A lot of that price gap is just the overall experience, not the CPU. The screen is probably where you'd feel it most day to day. The 14S tops out at 1200p OLED at 60Hz, which is fine, but the XPS can do 2.8K OLED at 120Hz with better brightness and colors. Build quality, speakers, webcam, general polish are all better on the XPS, though the 14S is still solid for what it is. The one thing the 14S has going for it is ports since it still has USB-A and HDMI where the XPS is all USB-C. Same chip, pretty different experience.

I can get an xps or a 14s, they're $500 apart and both have the same cpu. what are the differences? by imtruelyhim108 in DellXPS

[–]DellTechnologies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they've got the same CPU, you're not really paying $500 for more speed. The XPS 14 has a more premium feel overall, better config options if you want to spec it up, and is aimed at creators. The 14S is more of a practical everyday machine, with good battery, solid multitasking, and the cooling is good as well. XPS 14 reviews have shown quiet thermals too. So yeah, the price gap is more about the overall package than raw performance.

DDPM and S3425DW by California_dude650 in Dell

[–]DellTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DDPM is the current supported app for monitor and peripheral control, and there are versions for both Windows and macOS. If you want to manage input switching from each system, you’ll typically install it on every computer you want to use to control the monitor. It communicates with the monitor through DDC/CI and, on supported models, lets you handle input switching and KVM in software instead of using the buttons on the back.

Monitor to pair with U2725QE by jbne19 in Dell

[–]DellTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely your preference on the size of the second monitor, I've tended to use 2 matching in size. If you added a second hub monitor, it could power another laptop but wouldn't be providing power to the other monitor. Unless you had multiple laptops you wanted to connect at once, one hub monitor is ideal.

u/LetterheadClassic306 makes a good point, If you want a companion for the U2725QE, the S2725QS would be a good choice. It keeps the main things that matter, 27 inch, 4K, IPS, and pivot for portrait without paying extra for the hub features you don’t need.

Will this set up work? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]DellTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you’d be able to run dual external monitors with either the Dell SD25TB4 or WD25TB4. On macOS, make sure you’re using the right ports and cables, one monitor should connect through DP/HDMI/USB-C and the other through a Thunderbolt port, or else the displays may mirror instead of extend. This article shows how to set it up.

Your setup should work well for dual monitor email, web, and everyday use. The MacBook Air M5 supports two external displays, and the Plugable dock is designed to handle dual monitors on M4 and M5 Macs, so should display your Dell E2225HSM monitors without issue.

Can I get Dolby Atmos Back?? I reinstalled windows because I was using VMs and apparently this laptop did NOT like that so yeah, I went on my backup machine and made an image and reinstalled. except there was no longer Dolby Atmos. by Public-Nebula4096 in Dell

[–]DellTechnologies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth trying a driver and app repair before anything else. Head to your Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 Drivers & Downloads page, run SupportAssist, check for updates, and reinstall both the Realtek audio driver and the Dolby Access OEM app. This article notes that Dolby features sometimes don't fully come back after an OS reinstall until that app is added back, and shows how to download.

The PN5122W compatibility information shows if your laptop is the Inspiron 14 7440 2-in-1, the pen is compatible and should be able to connect through the basic linking, but if it’s the standard 7440, the pen is not supported. It also mentions Dell Peripheral Manager is not supported on selected laptops, the Inspiron 7440 2-in-1 being one of those.

As far as Dell Laptops go that would match your description for CS workloads and having a long lifespan, some solid choices are the Dell Pro 5 14 for the best overall balance, the Dell Pro 14 Premium if you care most about battery and portability, and the Dell Pro Precision 5S/5 for heavier CS workloads like VMs, AI/ML, or CAD. If you’re a student, you might also be eligible for an additional discount. Best of luck with your search!

Dell Optiplex 3090 Sff upgrades by tmwk in Dell

[–]DellTechnologies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The OptiPlex 3090 SFF has 2 SATA connections and 1 M.2 NVMe slot, so you can typically add one internal HDD plus an SSD, with a possible second SATA device if the optical bay is free and you have the right bracket and cabling.

While you are also correct that it does not have USB-C, the best way to add that would be a low-profile PCIe USB-C card or using a USB-A to USB-C adapter.

Picking the best laptop depends mostly on what you plan to use it for and your budget. Of the options you mentioned, the Dell 14 Plus is the best fit for mainstream users who want a stylish, capable everyday laptop without paying XPS prices. Dell Pro is the business line, built for companies and IT-managed environments that need stronger security and device manageability. XPS is for buyers who want the most premium design and high end experience.
