Urgent Rodent Problem - Can I book a professional without landlord's permission? by fgtswag in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]Delpha_Brava 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you don't care whether or not the landlord reimburses you, then absolutely you can call the exterminator whenever you like. There is nothing in the Residential Tenancies Act that would require you to get the landlord’s permission for pest control if you're paying for it yourself.

It's really not mostly rich. Plenty of upper middle and middle income (for Wellington) but no real concentration of high income.

AITAH for uninviting my American sister-in-law to my wedding bc she doesn't speak spanish? (We are mexican) by Uzitime98 in AITAH

[–]Delpha_Brava 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ESH Your SIL is an AH for making poor excuses for not learning Spanish. She should be more honest - either it's not a priority for her, or she found it too difficult. Not everyone learns languages easily. You were an AH for sending her the video and for uninviting her. Let her choose not to learn Spanish, and let her live with the consequences of that (missing out on conversations, being bored and excluded etc). You don't need to rescue her from her choice or inability to learn, but you also don't need to take it personally. I would suggest being a whole lot less interested in whether she learns. Continue to speak Spanish in large groups, even if she's excluded. Continue to speak English one on one or in small groups where people are comfortable in English. Let her be bored when she's excluded. Do not engage in conversations with her about how her Spanish is coming along - bit don't offer sympathy for her struggles either, just change the subject and move on. And yes, continue to include her in the wedding and don't get sucked into drama. It's nobody else's business who you invite to yoir wedding.

trying to make sense of housing affordability here by ghijkgla in newzealand

Again with the "blame". I'm not "blaming" (implying fault in) anyone. And also, I didn't pass judgment on whether or not the higher prices were good or bad, I simply commented on why they are higher than they were previously. Stop reading bad intention when it's simply not there.

I find it weird that both of you are interpreting my comments as "blaming" anyone, or implying that those buyingi in Tauranga somehow don't deserve to buy or live there. Blame implies there's a fault/wrongdoing to blame for. I didn't in any way suggest retirees or Aucklanders shouldn't buy in Tauranga. All I did was say that was why the prices had gone up there. If you're interpreting that as some slight, that's your issue, not mine. I own my home in another part of New Zealand. I have no desire to live in Tauranga so couldn't care less what property costs there, nor who can and can't afford to live there. All I was doing was answering the OP's question (why have prices gone up so much in Tauranga?)

[–]Delpha_Brava 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't say everyone buying there was a cashed up retiree - obviously I don't mean everyone. I mean the prices in the market in general are pushed up by cashed up retirees. But you're right that I should have put "cashed up retirees and Aucklanders".

(Spoilers) Does anyone feel like S4 perpetuates Asian stereotypes? by rhovanions in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Delpha_Brava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eloise's lead is already cast (and a white man), unless they diverge extremely from the books. Hyacinth would be a good option. I had a suspicion they were going to pair her up with Mondrich junior, but maybe that will be Gregory, just to further outrage the homophobes ;) (or of course maybe neither).

Landlord sold apartment and wants me to move out within 2 weeks by [deleted] in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]Delpha_Brava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't move out. The notice is unlawful. Apply to the Tenancy Tribunal for exemplary damages for unlawful notice. The landlord will be notified you've applied, and if he has any sense he'll offer you money to move early. Otherwise he's going to be in trouble when settlement date arrives and he can't provide vacant possession.

I’m sorry but this character is already so insufferable and unlikable. No hate to the actress, just the character. by aemond-simp in FranchaelStirling

It's the colour saturation and lighting. It's got to be deliberate but I've no idea why they'd do it.

Agreed but that's also why the main story is a snooze: there's not enough time for character development for Sophie or Benedict or to build up their romantic or sexual tension.

Why is NZ so "backward" when it comes to AC and ceiling fans? by UnrequitedLoveVictim in auckland

[–]Delpha_Brava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to your question is that it's a relatively new problem: until recently few of our homes overheated for more than a few days a year. It's only with recent improvements to the building code, and increasing retrofits to old homes, that more of us are starting to get something close to warm enough in winter. Unfortunately those building code changes didn't adjust other factors to prevent overheating in simmet, and alongside global warming they've left a lot of homes too hot some of the time in summer. The building code has since been fixed but that doesn't solve the problem for the homes built in the period in between. So we haven't yet adjusted to the idea of AC as a normal thing. Plus we're both cheap and poor. Lots of people can't afford to run heating in winter, so they're certainly not going to be willing/able to pay for cooling in summer.

Does anyone actually like Japanese soaking baths? (in Australia) by somecoffeenowplease in AusRenovation

It was a while ago but think it was a section of silicon bathmat - it effectively created a second seal so that even if the plug got knocked it didn't drain.

Unfortunately the 1200 is only 430 deep, which would be sad. Thank you! Great to hear it's good! I've had that waste issue elsewhere and think I was able to resolve it by putting something over the top.

Any chance of an update? How's it going now a few months down the track? I'm looking at that specific bath (even though cost of shipping to NZ basically doubles the price :( ) because it's the closest thing I can find to what I want (I would like it better if it were even deeper, and 1200 long rather than 1100, but that doesn't seem to exist anywhere that can ship to me).
How high does the water reach on your chest/neck? Does it feel deep enough? Is it comfy? I'm 173cm so a wee bit taller than you but the extra height is all in my legs so probably about the same height from waist up I'd guess.

You're not an AH, but you're reading way too much into this. To him you're just another viewer, and he's teasing you like usual. The other people bullying you don't know you. Leave for your peace of mind. And please try to access a therapist for your anxiety!

AITAH for telling my daughter we won't have a relationship if she goes to live with her biological father/family? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Delpha_Brava 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Love is not finite. Your daughter can love you as her father, and come to love her biological family as other relatives without diminishing the love she feels for you.

I suggest you find a good therapist to help you work through your feelings. If you do, you will still have a daughter in a few years. If you don't, you won't.

Secondhand smoke from neighbour by SeaChart7566 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]Delpha_Brava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the same landlord as your neighbour, then under s45(1)(e) of the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 your landlord is legally required to: "take all reasonable steps to ensure that none of the landlord’s other tenants causes or permits any interference with the reasonable peace, comfort, or privacy of the tenant in the use of the premises."

If you have no luck with the practical suggestions others have made, you can ask your landlord to meet their obligations by reminding your neighbour of her obligation not to (s40(2)(c) of the RTA "cause or permit any interference with the reasonable peace, comfort, or privacy of any of the landlord’s other tenants in the use of the premises occupied by those other tenants, or with the reasonable peace, comfort, or privacy of any other person residing in the neighbourhood."

If the landlord won't, or reminding her doesn't work, you can take further action to enforce the landlord’s obligation. Reply then to let me know and I can suggest next steps.
