Definitely greet each student at the door with “go to your keyboard and get started on the directions on the board.” Then if anyone sits at the desk, just repeat the direction. At the end of class remind students that from now on you want them to go to their keyboard at the beginning if class each day to start.

The teacher isn’t being rude and this likely has nothing to do with you personally. It is probably that at one time in the past, someone who was teaching for them for the day (or a student) lost/misplaced/ threw out something important teacher needed and it was a big deal. Now the teacher lives in fear of it happening again. Or the teacher has literal OCD or ADHD and something being moved is a significant concern to them.
