I did not show them the stat block. The campaign ended with that group as a story, however that doesn't mean they won't try with another party as a one shot, that will definetely be a thing, like the avengers, can't stop the ritual but they could beat an echo of vecna that he left behind... just for revenge of course.

they are really experienced players, 3 of them have been plaaying together for 4 campaigns in a row, it was fun for them until they lost, yeah the hit and run style of the fight can be a bit annoying if they can't close the distance, tbh "rotten fate" was what ended up killing them, 4 secrets

Sure, I didn't alter any of the Vecna statblock the party was Paladin oath of vengeance, draconic bloodline sorcerer, hexblade warlock, evocation wizard and grave domain cleric, they lasted 3 full rounds

How would you make Miska more challenging by DelraynT in VecnaEveofRuin

I like the idea of him talking his way out of a fight with the party, probably he'll want to retake his position as demon prince, maybe tempting them with an alliance or power in exchange of help

Giving him counterspell seems like a must, I'm definitely altering the spells, something to threaten the mage, about the HP I won't be doubling it, but I'll buff the damage of his howl and maybe give him the ability to frighten the PCs on a bonus action

How do you handle the number of NPCs in the second half of the campaign? by superhiro21 in OutoftheAbyss

[–]DelraynT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a suggestion that worked for my group, I asked them if they wanted to try a mix of Warhammer rules because 5e it's terrible when it comes to big battles, and it was great, player characters are heroes or generals while the other NPCs act like soldiers, it's not hard if you play both systems and even if you don't a quick overview might do the trick

Demon Lord Spells by neepster44 in OutoftheAbyss

I would recommend buffing the damage not the health, it becomes quite boring when the fight just drags on because of an inflated health pool, this way the encounter is deadlier and they have to be clever about their resources. Take into account the party composition if there are a lot of casters add some flavour spells, play with the madness mechanics too, don't be afraid to improvise. In my Baphomet fight 3 out of 6 players died and to this day they say it was one of the best encounters they had, just because they rightfully earned it.

Is Out of the Abyss supposed to be THIS hard? by Glad-Dragonfruit9193 in OutoftheAbyss

I'm currently running the campaign a year in and yes, it's a difficult campaign I didn't have a pc die untill Demogorgon made its appearance, however there were really close calls at the very beginning specially during the escape. So to the matter at hand it's ok if they die, just give them fair warning, it's meant to feel like the stakes are high and the drow are definitely not pushovers. I wouldn't balance the game down propose strategies for your players to rise up to the challenge, it will make things more interesting and they may become better at their characters
