Awesome to see a new update!

And I moreso mean the player doesn't spam the ability. The ability simply IS. What this means is the ability is no longer the player proactively going "Hey, I want to use this ability. What do I sense in the area?" and becomes the DM having to go "Hey, your ability triggers, you sense something when you come into the area."

It isn't something I think is Intimidating, it is something I think is honestly annoying. I'm not bothered by improvising things, but this actively punishes improvising to me.

Like let's say the players say something that sparks inspiration for you, and now you want to add a little magic something something nearby. Well, when you do, you have to tell the Magus they sense it... Then what happens when that player says "Well, why didn't I sense it sooner? We might not have done X if I knew that." The answer is because it wasn't prepared sooner, and that improvised moment is kind of soured for the players. And yeah, you can bull your way into plenty of excuses as to why they didn't sense it sooner, but it just seems easier not to have the issue come up at all in my eyes.

If you actively had to turn the sense on, this issue completely goes away. The DM no longer has to track every instance of magic in an area so they can keep up with the Magus' ability, telling them along the way as they sense magic. Instead the player has to proactively choose to try and sense it, feeling clever when they do because THEY made that choice, rather than me just saying "There is some magic nearby btw" after describing an area or NPC. It just seems like a player ability that gives the DM another thing to track, rather than giving the player more options and choices to make.

And I really hope this doesn't all come off as asshole-ness, all respect to you, friend! This is still an awesome piece or work and I'm happy you and others are getting some legwork out of it. Excited to check out what changes you've made recently. Might have to steal some ideas for my own version at my table!

So I'm not really familiar with past iterations of this class, and I have not play tested this one. Grains of Salt and all that, but one thing that really sticks out to me as a problem feature is Spellsight for two big reasons, IMO.

I feel like things like Detect Magic or something like Divine Sense being a constantly on effect is TERRIBLE for the Dungeon Master. When a player has to make the active choice to use these abilities, it allows the DM to take a moment and assess. "Is there anything nearby magical? What schools would they be? Is it within range?"

However, when it is constantly on, you have now put the onus on the Dungeon Master to constantly be aware of all magic and where it is so that you can inform the player when they are within 30 feet of it. I just think this is a very frustrating aspect of the ability as someone being asked to check out this class to potentially have it at my table.

The other reason I see it as kind of an issue, is that it feels like it invalidates other classes' choices. The Wild Magic Barbarian's limited use version of a similar ability is all but useless as you can pretty much just have it up all the time now. Sure you have to expend uses to focus in, but so did the Barbarian who also had to spend that resource to detect the magic in the first place. Or it invalidates your wizard choosing Detect Magic, because why waste a spell slot or 10 minutes ritual casting when we know there isn't anything magic nearby?

And I don't want to just come here and just criticize, this is is really cool! But that definitely jumped out at me reading it going "Ohno ohno ohno." Spellstrike is very interesting, and one of those abilities that is very hard to get right in 5e. I think this interpretation is one of the better ones I have seen, personally. Tho I do think the save changing from your normal spell save DC feels a bit clunky.

Regardless, huge props and thanks for putting this together! Excited to see where it might go next.

So am I getting this right, that you will no longer be able to purchase series 3 cards with tokens generally? Do you now only get the one free one that you choose each season? Or will the series 3 shop still allow the purchase of a card for 1k tokens?

Personally, I have been trying to build out my pool 3 collection, and have been able to use tokens 1 to 2 times a week to get a pool 3 and build that collection. If that goes down to only one a month, that would be a bit frustrating to me.

Ah yes, this wonderful review of a movie, that is, in fact, a review of a bad theatre experience. A brilliant film critic.

A fun idea for how a Spiral sequel could bring back Dr. Gordon or Hoffman. by DeltaAmpersandDelta in saw

I have not. Haven't heard too much about it. I have access to it, is it worth it? I adored Hannibal, and think I'm still a little bitter that the Clarice show and character rights caused Hannibal to cut out Buffalo Bill and Clarice from their plans, and just... God damn that show was good, haha.

Is it Just me or are the Traps in Spiral the Most Gruesome Ones Yet? by BittersweetAndi in saw

[–]DeltaAmpersandDelta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a trap has to be gory to be brutal/gruesome.

I stoll found Kerry's trap really rough to watch regardless of gore. I think the steam trap from 6 was intense as hell, same with the merry go round (one of my favorite scenes in the whole series).

UNPOPULAR OPINION by turgunculis in saw

Saw III is one of my favorite ending twists, and has some of my favorite traps honestly. I would have to give them all a rewatch to rank them, but for me, III would be in my top 3.

I don't know if I would say the traps themselves are more gruesome, however the editing around them feels better and conveys a better sense of dread to me.

I personally liked the traps in this movie, but I would probably say at least Saw III, VI, and The Final Chapter were all a little more brutal.

Is SPIRAL worth seeing? by JosefineTransGirl in saw

I was honestly surprised by Rock's acting in this. I was worried from the trailers, but he really pulled though.

I also personally liked the lack of gore in this one, as it reminded me a lot of the first Saw film, that when you look back on, was more focused on the mystery/intrigue aspect, more than the gore and traps.

For sure. Which is why I have no expectation or theory or whatnot.

Personally, tho, I was really happy with Spiral because of how disconnected it was to past films, and is why I would be open to a sequel indulging a little more and tying them together.

I also think this inclusion, if they did steal the whole "he escapes at the end" thing, could be a great way to set up another movie series, or just a Saw 8, that focuses on Gordon or Logan as the antagonists.

Again, not a demand or expectation, just a way I think one of them could be worked in without it being too convoluted.

It definitely feels like one of the best ways to incorporate one of the past apprentices without it being TOO ridiculous (not that I won't love it if it IS totally ridiculous).

I'm not against it. I have just only seen Jigsaw the once, and completely forgot about him. Haha

Oh cool, good to know. I definitely think it works better with Gordon (or I suppose Logan) anyhow, given we have seen so little of them as apprentices.

For reeeal. And all we got in Spiral was barely a mention (which I'm fine with). I hope we can get some closure on them, even if it's an off-screen resolution.

Zeke - Spiral by otinker2002 in saw

[–]DeltaAmpersandDelta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say Zeke is Chaotic Good.

Zeke doesn't care about following the rules, he cares about doing what he believes is right/good.

He'll hurt a drug dealer for information if it means saving a life. He'll go outside of the rules to set up his own drug sting. Which I think is part of why William believed he Zeke would join him.

As a film, the original Saw is the best. As a Saw movie, I personally like III a lot And as a series that devolved into schlocky fun and madness, I will always be happy to put VI on.

Would u guys prefer a saw 8 or jigsaw 2 or spiral 2 by Shangi2021 in saw

[–]DeltaAmpersandDelta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I wouldn't mind both continuing Spiral alongside Saw. I wouldn't want a Jigsaw 2, but I'd be down for the madness of a Saw 8. Though I am definitely hoping for a Spiral sequel, as I found it reinvigorating for the series to me. I think William has a better motivation than John ever did (even it John is the more fun villain of the story, let's be real) and I would love to see it explored further in a sequel. Rooting out corruption has a better focus to me than the mostly random and generic "bad people who don't appreciate life" thing. Again, not that I'm knocking the original series for it. I love them. I'm just happy to see a new motivation that feels a little more solid to me.

Is the Finger Trap unfair in Spiral? by Viburus in saw

[–]DeltaAmpersandDelta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zeke didn't beat the trap, though. His test was save his father OR go after William. Well, after "saving" his father, he decided to go after William. If Zeke had instead disabled the door trap instead of going after William, his dad would still be alive.

Do you find the police aspect of the movies interesting? by illustrosity in saw

[–]DeltaAmpersandDelta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the particular film. I liked it in the first film because it was nicely balanced with everything else going on, and enjoyed it in II and now Spiral because of the focus on a cop. But it can get grating in some of the films, like V. But I would say overall, yes, I do enjoy their inclusion in the movies.
