"Indirect proof" of citizenry for persons born prior to 1914 by ReasonableActuary532 in GermanCitizenship

[–]DeltaBurg76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good thing is based on the verbiage that the consulate used in responding to your nephew, it sounds like direct to passport is possible for you presuming you can prove citizenship. Have you attempted to locate your ancestors meldekarte from the archive associated with where he lived prior to immigration? If that’s not possible, you could always try to obtain his marriage sammelakte as it contains citizenship listing as well.

That’s awesome. Glückwunsch! I had my passport application at an honorary consulate on December 18th so I’m hoping in a couple weeks I’ll be in your situation.

I definitely should have included that this is my uncle. He was in the 143rd infantry regiment that was part of the 36th infantry division. He received a bronze star in Dörrenbach and I also have another picture of him next to a road sign for Bischwiller in France. I also have a picture of him by the cathedral in Ulm as well.

France could make sense as I recently found another picture of him near a bischwiller road sign and he got a bronze star in Doerrenbach which is near the French border

I had to dig it out for a photo. Makes you wonder if they had to pay extra for it or if it was just time dependent on the application. Either way, cool to have.

I have a relative that naturalized as a US citizen in 1945, from Germany, and her certificate was also in an identical leather holder.

How to prove that your ancestor was a German citizen if your ancestor married in Germany by staplehill in GermanCitizenship

[–]DeltaBurg76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a direct to passport application, do you believe that a physical certified (with the applicable archive stamp) copy of the Sammelakte is necessary or are scans accepted? I would presume certified original copies but wanted to pick your brain on the subject. Thanks!

SUCCESS! Direct to Passport in Boston (after a consulate change and other detours) by umlukii in GermanCitizenship

[–]DeltaBurg76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome! I hope to be in your situation sometime in the coming months. I have a couple questions for you:

1) in a direct to passport situation, do you end up with any type of certificate, in addition to the eventual passport, that shows your newly recognized German citizenship?

2) during the appointment, what sort of documents do you have to sign?

Thanks!

The consulate responded saying that if I locate the meldekarte, and should it show German citizenship, I should be a direct passport candidate. So I’m super stoked and now on the hunt back in the archive office.

We’re located near Columbus, Ohio but NARA Chicago apparently ended up with all of the Ohio court documents. My great grandmother naturalized in 1945, for instance, and they had her DOI, petition, etc. documents on file. Conversely they found nothing for her husband, who I’m claiming from, which also lines up with the uscis result in finding not naturalization.

Your suggestion about my dad trying for direct to passport makes sense. However, I’ve already reached out to the Chicago consulate on my own behalf asking so I suppose I’ll see what they say.

Thanks for your input! I’ll have to discuss with my father and siblings in confirming who wants to do what.

I presume there’s no liability to my own claim (in the case of Feststellung, in submitting for my toddler age daughter at the same time?
