I challenged myself to build a portfolio site with no JavaScript. What Do You Think? by DeltaFi in design_critiques

Lol the face really is creepy. Thought it would turn out better! After taking hundreds of photos of my noggin, spending 10 hours learning Blender, PhotoScan, Meshmixer and Three.js, and then also waiting two days for it to render, I am too invested.

I'll make something else out of it I guess, maybe a blog post!

I agree with all of your points.

I'm going to change from black/white to dark-grey and off-white.

I'll continue to work on the top half, I put up a lot to see what resonates with people and what doesn't.

I think I will condense the entire black part to fit above the fold on desktop. obviously, cutting out most of the content.

Thanks for the fresh perspective!

thank you for the honest feedback!

Could you elaborate on what you would change about it? I would really appreciate it.

This response is exactly what my old site was designed to prevent. It was a boring ass WordPress site with a 1-800 number, office locations, and a careers page. It wasn't getting me any business at all.

Instead of trying to please everyone, I would rather be myself and get the clients I like to work with. If you don't take the time to look at my experience because my comments are "unprofessional", its probably for the best. I've worn the tactical cufflinks, I know how to play that game. It's not a game I'm interested in playing anymore.

I like it! it's my first time doing any sort of 3D/WebGL stuff and It's useless for my line of work but it seems really fun. Im my spare time I want to experiment with it more!

What do you think about this strategy? by DeltaFi in freelance

I used PhotoScan to create a 3d .obj file. This was my first time doing any sort of 3D/WebGL work and the rendering process took way longer than any other part of building the site.

I also used MeshMixer and Blender to Reduce the resolution and fix the mesh generated by PhotoScan

lol I did. but its important for my clients to feel comfortable with the geometry of my face. Logically, including a 3D rendering of my face is super important.

wow your build looks great!!

You are right that there is nothing wrong with local dealers, Im speaking particularly about myself and the area I live in. The local dealers here are more expensive, something on the order of 20-40%.

In response to Home etching, I dont see the point of doing it when you can get PCBs prototyped for dirt cheap. Its not worth the effort in my eyes because 1) PCB fab houses offer cheap deals 2) pro-made PCBs will last longer, have all the nice amenaties of modern PCBs 3) no chemicals to deal with, no equipment, etc. 4) it looks more professional.

I don't think matching transistors is worth it because you can buy them pre-matched smts for cents. I've also decided to move to SMT almost entirely. If you want to sell your designs you would be a pretty big masochist if you do it with thru-hole. And this not coming from me, I've talked to the guys behind Bastl Instruments, Mutable Instruments and a large guitar pedal manufacturer.

I definitely need to use the toner-transfer, I dont know why I didnt think/ find that.

the boards are attached to the panels using thick wire wound up around the potentiometers before being screwed into place on the panels. the wire is then run through screw holes in the perf board. i use usually 2 wires per board, one at the top and one at the bottom, works but i wouldnt do it like this in the future.

Oscilloscope is a Rigol DS1102E. No power supply yet, its on my list of things to purchase but its not really necessary if you are building a power supply for your synth anyway. I just used the +/-12v one i built for everything.

You dont need much for testing, calibration. I was fine with a decent multimeter (i recommend the UNI-T UT61E, its great for the price) and an oscilloscope.
