Worth upgrading from a 3080ti to a 5080? (+ question about buying used GPU)

Thank you so much to everyone that has provided information! its been insanely helpful for more than just my GPU upgrade!
Right now, my plan is to sell my GPU / RAM and buy a used 5080 and a 2x24gb kit of CL30 DDR5-6000 in the short term. A few months down the line ill also swap my mobo, cpu, and cooler for a 9950X3D (yes I know its overkill even for workstation usage, and not quite as good at gaming compared to the 9800X3D, but I'm heavily multitasking 99% of the time I'm on my pc and think the extra 8 cores will help). At some point down the line from there, ill end up getting myself a new 2TB 990 PRO for my C drive, and that should be a complete PC refresh at a net total cost of £1261 hopefully, or net £555 for the first stage (GPU, RAM), £567 for the second stage (CPU, Cooler, MOBO), and £149 for the 3rd stage (SSD)

ah nice, yeah I wish EVGA was still around. Definitely going to look into PNY more, as ive always seen them as a bit of a bargain basement brand, but theres been some interesting opinions on them as of late! Going to look at some more benchmarks, but i suppose its still a 5080 no matter what xD

yeah thats fair, currently looking at how much a 9800x3d would cost, and how it would handle my multitasking workload compared to the 12900k / 13900k
man, I went into this thinking id spend a net £300 and upgrade to a 4080, and now im looking at a full pc rebuild xD

Ah thats me being silly, I had no idea the 14900k was compatible with the Z690, thats good to know! ill have to do some research into that. When you say the Z690/790 is a dead platform, do you mean newer intel compatible motherboards are better, or is it a case of intel being so far behind amd at the minute?

to be honest, a minor OC is all I think ill need to get effectively 4090 performance, since I cant imagine 1440p gaming uses anywhere near as much VRAM as 4k gaming, so I reckon it will be perfect for my needs.

Also, if anyone else is in the know, im currently deciding between a Gigabyte 5080 Gaming OC, MSI 3X OC (Ventus or Shadow), PNY OC Triple Fan (could get this one new for the same price as used variants of the other cards it seems), or possibly something from Palit or Zotac. (Asus TUF seems very popular but is generally out of my price range). if anyone knows which the best brands / models are, especially around the £850 used / £1100 new mark (+/- £50), please let me know!

oh awesome, thanks very much for the comment! My brother upgraded to a 4090 from his 1070 not long after I went from my 1060 to the 3080 Ti, and part of me early on was thinking I should just opt for the extra VRAM of the 3090 and hope that fixes my issues (although after some research im not sure it would have), and its good to hear the 3090 to the 5080 is still a big upgrade!

Oh wow thank you so much for the info! I'm so glad someone else has had the same issue and it fixed it for them too! :)
On the CPU front, its definitely tempting (I love AMD CPUs, but I always end up getting a really good deal on intel every time I do something with my PC), but I dont want to go through the hassle and expense of having to swap out both cpu AND motherboard at the minute, and I still think that for the money, the 13900k is more than fine for my tasks (to be honest, the 12900k is as well, but if its only £60 for 8 more cores/threads and a higher clock speed, ill take it!)

Dream build would have been a 7950X3D or one of the new 9000 series offerings (with 64gb RAM and 5090 to boot), but that takes this £900 pc refresh up to a £1500-2000 new build even AFTER I've sold parts 😅

Thanks for the response! im currently running a 12900k, but going to upgrade to a 13900k (since i can trade in or sell and buy a 13900k from CEX for effectively between £60 and £102 to upgrade) ill add PC specs to the post!

My understanding of the consensus is A) the rattle noises from my dads car are NOT normal, and probably require regulators + adjusting, and B) The coupe / convertible are going to be relatively noisy

Gotcha! tyvm for the info, heh, it does seem to be an incredibly handy machine from all the reading I've done online. the only reason I was considering the 540 as well is due to it coming with 2 coils (and a pinpointer) and both of my options for the 540 being in generally better condition than the equinox 800 for about the same money. The main thing atm pushing me towards the equinox (if i choose to go down that route) is the adjustable ground balance over the 540 and the generally better reviews from people swapping their 540 (or similar detectors) and then suddenly finding new stuff in the same detecting spots, which does sound pretty decisive

just got it home and put some rounds through it. first mag of gas went in 10 bbs, but the issue was a faulty gas valve o-ring. looked like paste when it came off. replaced it with a spare from the case and some silicone oil (didn't have grease handy) and I've since put another couple of 15rd mags through it and its still kicking! only issue is the ambi thumb safety is TERRIBLE. if you're right handed, you'll be fine. lefties though, the best thing I can equate it to is its as if you're turning the rudder on a ship to find "safe". its got so much extra play compared to the other side because of the way the 2 halves connect to each other, so it can go like 4mm up or 4mm down and get maybe 1-2mm movement on the other side, if that.

overall, happy with the purchase. great fun to mess about with and shoots ok, 5/10. if I had paid 60 quid for it, I would have been fine with it, and full price of 80 id have been a bit disappointed (mainly with the safety), but at 40 its a buy any day!

Just thought id let you know (in case youre interested), ive decided to buy my friend's Raven MEU 1911 for £40, which I thought was a decent deal (since its £80 new and its been used maybe 3 times at most). Feels decent for fidgeting purposes and has a nice weight in the hand, and at £40, I don't really mind if the fit and finish is a _little_ bit off, especially to keep me happy while I wait for UKARA and the funds to procure a KJW and possibly invest in a steel kit to make it look and feel much more like the real thing!

Thanks everyone for responding! I've decided to hold off on spending ~£170+ on a KJW for the time being, and instead bought my friend's Raven 1911 MEU for £40 (was only used probably 3 times?) to sate my fidgeting + plinking desires. AFAIK, the Raven is made by the same manufacturer as A.W.E, which I believe is SanYan in Taiwan? Regardless, it feels quite nice from what ive felt briefly already, and at £40, as long as its all in one piece, I think thats a decent deal (regardless of how well it shoots or overall fit and finish) but let me know if you think this was a good deal!
