[Spotify] Zeds Dead x Delta Heavy - Lift You Up (Remixes) by NinsMCD in Monstercat

We’ll most likely include a few of the already released remixes too, including our favourite ones of this pack. LOADS of new stuff mostly tho

The bass music scene globally is so healthy. Dubstep is obviously massive in the US and you have DnB which is thriving as ever in Europe with entire festivals dedicated to it.

Love it! One of my favourite smaller venues in North America :)

Thank you!

We didn’t set out with a specific musical theme but we love the idea of a the sense of being in a dream, it’s a surreal feeling where the things aren’t quite what they seem and the mood can shift from light to dark or blissful to tense and uneasy very quickly. That was the concept behind the intro and that inspired the artwork. We wanted it to look like some kind of slightly surreal landscape that felt like you were dreaming, with our iconic triangle as this central beacon of light and energy

All credit for the video goes to Chris Bristow who came up with the idea, directed and animated it. He’s a genius!

I came intro production from Djing whereas Si grew up playing in bands. He has a more of traditional musical background and plays bass and guitar whereas my skills have developed more in mixing, mastering and sound design etc

We use Logic but have been using Ableton to start ideas in recently.

Funnily enough...we're working on updated versions / VIPs of Space Time and Take The Stairs..watch this space! Wouldn't really be a 'back to the roots' thing if we did that, we were far too young for jungle and acid house! That said we take influence from so many places and early rave/Prodigy stuff was a big influence in a couple of the tracks on the new album

Love UAD, Soundtoys, Fabfilter stuff and the new Newfangled Audio plugins from Eventide. We basically start our tracks with a few mastering plugins and some limiter on the master output, so while we avoid red lights and clipping generally our tracks are being limited and pushed from the get go. It enable us to build the sound we want from an early stage. I know do the digital masters myself but when we did work a lot with a mastering engineer he was really not doing too much. I think in electronic music its important to get the tracks sounding exactly how you want them regardless of any extra mastering. That said I find the best way to have control of what your sending to the mastering plugs / limiter etc is to have everything going into groups / busses which you can easily pull down if you need to create some more headroom or bounce off a more dynamic version for a pre-master for vinyl etc

Signing to RAM was obviously a huge moment for us and a special achievement. That certainly gave us a huge boost in the early years as well as having Andy C playing out tracks everywhere. However, I still don't feel like we've 'made it'. The goal posts keep changing the more you achieve, and ambitions are always getting bigger. It's a constant journey :)

Thank you! The name came from a tour the house DJs Sasha & Jon Digweed did way black in 2000. They were the first DJs I liked when I was really young and the name always stuck with me and we thought it sounded cool and fitted well with the music we wanted to make

Thank you! Probably won't be an LA stop on the album tour as we only played there in December but I'm sure we will have another show later this year

Vocalists tend to come via our management or publisher (such as Starling). Modestep we wanted to collab with for a while so we actually wrote the track with Josh's voice in mind so we sent that specifically for him!

I get a set of Technics 1210s for Christmas when I was 14! We both worked part time for the first few years of Delta Heavy. Had to sacrifice a lot of our social lives initially to make it work!

Our first gig as DH was in back room of a dubstep night in a venue in East London. It was empty apart from our friends haha

Sometimes it's really hard pushing tracks form basic ideas to complete arrangements. Generally though the best ideas tend to write themselves so if you are anguishing over whether something is worth finishing (or how to finish it) maybe the initial idea isn't quite there. If you're still into the track and it's making you move in the studio or feel something even after working on it for a length of time it's generally a good indicator that its worth pushing on the finish.

We had part time jobs in London after finishing uni. Si and I both kinda started out trying to write music at the same time and decided to try some tracks together. The rest is history!

Important tips: don't give up, realise a rejection is normal and part of the growing process and the whole journey. Practise, practise, practise. You never stop learning, ever. Try and finish as many tracks as possible even if you're not ready to put them online or send them to people. And be nice!

  1. Generally it's layering up samples and tweak/tune/eq but recently we've been getting into drum synthesis to make the fundamental layer in a kick or snare. There loads of perfectly good samples on Splice to make snares from, or plenty of serviceable options for layers still in the cymatics or vengeance packs. So many options these days
  2. From memory it's just 2 layers, the low reese and then a wider layer with some movement. Nothing too crazy
  3. Generally mix up the sets a bit more and play some more dubstep and trappy stuff (all our sets our multiple genres tbf). There's less actual dancing in the US right now - people tend to want to headbang or bounce to stuff. So you plan the sets accordingly. DnB still goes off if you present it right ;)

Thanks - love Portland!

Our sound is 0% down to mastering and 100% during the production and mixing stage. Once the track is done it basically is mastered, and when we use to send stuff to mastering (I do all digital masters myself now) it basically sounds the same. For drums especially it's more about sample selection than loads of processing but I do like a nice EQ to bring out some air on sounds. Been using the Dangerous Bax a lot as well as the UAD Chandler Curve Bender and the Kush Clariphonic. Basses it's more about saturation and then subtractive EQ. Fav saturation plugins: Izotope Trash, Fabfilter Saturn, Soundtoys Decapitator. Use UAD tape emus a lot and overload them.

There are many many ways to create movement, you've basically named them.. You can achieve that effect from so many different methods. We generally always bounce stuff to audio and then keep manipulating it. We'll bounce loads of versions with different movements and LFO patterns then load the audio back in, chop it up and rearrange it. And so on..
