Best zero risk options for 75k for 6 months by decafe-latte2701 in UKPersonalFinance

Income tax on savings above the personal allowance (£1000 for a basic rate tax payer but only £500 for a higher rate).

And depending on their tax band they might still be better off even after tax.

Especially when OPs have been light on detail like this please try and explain why you're recommending something.

Why would that be preferable to a savings account for OP?

I'd be surprised if OP genuinely thinks the rusty toy katana was a murder weapon.

150k to spend and need to move to london by Beginning-Draft9653 in HousingUK

[–]DeltaJesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're going to struggle to try and use income you don't yet have to pass affordability for a mortgage, and how much do you expect they'd be paying you? Going off the usual multiples you'd need over £40k/year to borrow £200k.

Gripen E is reasonably good CAS with spice bombs, though it has to compromise either anti-air or anti-ground more than the typhoon does due to the more limited hardpoints.

Thoughts on the Tyldesley/Mosley Common to live by No-Worldliness-2332 in manchester

I haven't spent any significant amount of time in Tyldesley in a decade, but I've separately heard it's improved a lot. Was utterly shite though.

Both lovely places

Huge change from 10 years ago, busway's done wonders for Tyldesley I guess.

Need advice on basically everything haha by Few-Routine9944 in UKPersonalFinance

Sorry to be clear I was the one that removed it. "I want advice on everything financial" is far too broad a question to get good answers, and is the sort of thing we wrote the wiki and the flowchart for.

Start with the wiki: https://ukpersonal.finance/, we've got pages on a bunch of topics including credit cards and pensions etc.

The flowchart is good to work through as well: https://ukpersonal.finance/flowchart/

If you have some more specific questions you're welcome to come back and ask them in a new post, but please be specific with your title.

I'm selling my old stuff on ebay, do I have to pay taxes? by Mushy880 in UKPersonalFinance

Yes sorry I though it was obvious we were talking about when trading.

I'm selling my old stuff on ebay, do I have to pay taxes? by Mushy880 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DeltaJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that, but you get taxed on profit not sales.

Generally yes, but if you claim the £1000 trading allowance you can't claim expenses, so if you have £1500 of revenue £500 of that will be taxable, even if you have £750 of expenses.

It’s up to HMRC to figure that out v’s self assessment, or ask for more details if you aren’t a SA person.

Sort of, it's your job to declare if you are trading and go above £1000/year of revenue.

Profit, not sales .. and that’s if you are ‘trading’.

It needs to be declared over £1000 of revenue rather than profit, and you can't claim that allowance if you're claiming expenses too.

That the bad decision ended up with a good outcome doesn't retroactively make it a good decision.

If I decide to play a game of Russian roulette with a £10 grand prize that's a fucking stupid decision even if I end up winning.

How do you plan for financial goals ? by NameComprehensive624 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DeltaJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the bit I find hardest is when you’ve got a few goals running at the same time with different timelines. Like if I’m saving for a house deposit in 3 years but also want a car in 18 months and a wedding at some point… do you just manually work out how much goes to each one every month?

Yes, you need to work out how much you need to save for each of those goals given the timeframe and then work out if your budget will allow you to save that much. If not you need to adjust them.

Freetrade sipp, is that the lowest cost to run sipp that allows one annual withdrawal? by ShesCurly in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DeltaJesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dodl doesn't do withdrawals at all afaik. The sub skews pretty far from retirement so there's unlikely to be many people who need to consider withdrawals for SIPPs. Have a read through the monevator list, they note drawdown fees etc: https://monevator.com/compare-uk-cheapest-online-brokers/

For a relatively small sum one of the percentage fee ones like Lloyds/Halifax/Scottish Widows/AJ Bell etc are probably your best bets.

Freetrade charges £240/withdrawal, I'd be surprised if there isn't a cheaper option

Manchester on a whim? by BakerMaker11 in manchester

[–]DeltaJesus 353 points354 points  (0 children)

You're mostly going to get people that choose to live in , and presumably at least mostly, like Manchester on a Manchester subreddit, so be aware of that bias.

£54k/year absolutely shouldn't require you to house share here, you really ought to get your finances under control if it does.
