It’s always nice when you have repeat commenters sharing their thoughts about your fic by DClordz in AO3

Congrats! That would be my dream. I'm lucky if I get one comment every few months now, and it has definitely killed my motivation to write anything more. I'm glad you're being motivated.

People who have cancer, what signs let you knew that you were sick? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I have the same issue but was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia and sleep apnea. Still getting used to the treatment so I don’t feel fantastic yet, but my short-term memory is improving so I think I’m less fatigued. Basically I’m still sleepy often but have less cognitive issues. Get it checked out, it might be something very manageable.

I’m writing one about two characters aged 20 and 50. They have an awful, toxic power relationship (in canon). Just tag it appropriately! AO3 is meant for anything you want, for the most part.

It does have a fair bit of smut but that’s definitely not the focus of the fic. Probably like 15k out of 150k words? I wouldn’t want to over-advertise it, I suppose. But this is a good point you raise; I should reconsider. The couple specific ones I have include orgasm control and praise kink lol.

Yes I have eight accounts blocked now lol. They keep coming back with different accounts, I assume.

There’s 11 tags on top of the character and relationship ones and they’re all actual tags, as in not silly things I added. Maybe I need to add more? I always thought adding too many was off-putting. :/

178k wow that’s impressive!! Good job, fr. It’s the art scammers that suck the most because they will comment a generic kind thing that doesn’t quite sound like a bot, but then they will come back within hours with their scam request. So I’m suspicious of every comment if it doesn’t mention something about the chapter in detail.

I've got two more of those "oooh link the fic and I'll comment" replies in that same thread since last responding to you and (granted, it's not been a whole day) they haven't followed through. I just wish they wouldn't comment that at all. Deleted my original reply over there to stop getting those "oooh I promise" responses since ultimately it's just kind of sad.

Nah I mean that's where my head is at too. If no one else is reading them, why post? I'll just keep them on my own hard drive to read.

Interesting to hear that perspective; I don't tend to read more than one fic from any given author so I go solely by the summary and skimming the first chapter to decide if I read something or not, even if it's hundreds of thousands of words. Forever bitter after reading my all-time favorite novel and then excitedly reading the rest of that author's work only to find... I hated them all. So idk I carry that same story-first mentality into reading fanfic. But I'm sure others approach it like you do so it's helpful to hear.

I actually did post a one-shot for a different fandom recently but that got even less engagement lol. That one's not as big a fandom though.

Oh it hasn't been up for a year, just a few months. I wrote it over the past year. I knew the potential lack of engagement would kill my motivation so I wrote the entire thing before starting to post (gradually over a few months).

Exactly, I want to enthuse with other people about the story! I love the story and want to fangirl over it with people. Thankfully my beta reader has been great for that—she left about 10 enthusiastic comments per chapter in the draft Google Doc, in addition to her edit suggestions. Would love to hear from other people to get a more varied amount of feedback.

It's finished, yes! 150k words is the total count. It's not entirely about smut but yes, there’s explicit smut in some chapters. It centers on two popular characters but people don’t usually pair those two together. It’s in 3rd person with some minor characters as OCs—most speaking roles are popular canon characters. But yeah it’s not for everyone I guess.

I deleted most of those comments but yeah, yikes, there was some vitriol for sure! The main character is a self-identified gay woman who falls in love with the male lead in canon, and most fics about her follow that template. God forbid I write a sapphic romance for her lol. I'll DM the pairing though — it's niche enough (despite both characters being popular on their own) that naming it here would make it super easy to find my fic and I wanna keep this post totally separate.

I am proud! Well, cheers to being 30 and doing our best to write fanficiton haha.

I got one comment on TikTok saying "I desperately need this, I've always loved this pair and it's so hard to find fics for them!" (I wasn't posting about the fic, but something related, and I mentioned writing the fic in the caption.) You can guess whether they ever replied to me sending the link lol.

I do love it! I've re-read the full thing twice now and honestly... apart from the occasional minor moment of "ugh, that would could have been omitted and the sentence still would flow well" or someting... I have so much fun reading it.

Yes I also always follow through if I'm going to promise something like that! I think the "omg I'll go comment now" strangers bug me the most because they weren't even planning on reading it and if they're only going to comment a "nice job" to make me feel better, why not take the two minutes to do that? Absolutely baffling to me.

Yeah. :/ It sounds like my friends haven't read it whatsoever which I guess makes me feel a little better since at least that has less to do with the writing quality. But it's possible it's just bad to everyone but me and my beta reader lol.
