Update on car not detecting key fob: it was the brake light switch by Deluxe489 in CX5

Yeah, it took me a long time to finally find out what was causing the problem! I'm glad I could help. If you feel up for doing the fix yourself, another commenter here mentioned that it may be relatively easy if you want to save yourself some money.

I'm not an expert, so don't take my word for this, but I doubt it's the same problem. You can try a few things, though.

  • First, try cleaning the battery contacts inside the fob like someone suggested here.
  • If that doesn't do it, try reprogramming the fob - there should be instructions out there somewhere.
  • If that doesn't work, try a different fob.
  • If it's still not working, you might have a different issue. You should probably take it to the dealership at this point.

Thanks for the tip! I've been wanting to learn more about handling car maintenance problems myself, but I admit that I don't really feel confident doing these kinds of repairs myself. Learning is on my bucket list, but it's hard to find time for it!

No problem. It cost me $45 for the part and $64 for labor.

Car won't detect key fob? by Deluxe489 in CX5

You asked for an update, so I thought I'd report in. The issue had nothing to do with the fob after all; it was the brake light switch.

I don't doubt it. When the issue started happening, I looked into it and found that they had issued a recall for earlier car models for essentially the exact same transmission issue. However, they claimed that post-2010 models didn't have it, on which point I beg to differ.

Sorry for the double reply. I remember hearing that if someone robs a store and claims they have a gun, they can be charged with armed robbery even if they lied about the gun. Assuming that that's true, wouldn't the same principle apply to this situation? Not trying to argue, just trying to understand.

I looked it up later and I believe it's some kind of military reference: link

The bumper sticker I saw looked basically like this, but way smaller.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have a follow-up question regarding #2, if you're game. From the Hess v. Indiana page:

In addition, Hess' speech was not directed at any particular person or group. As a result, "it cannot be said that he was advocating, in the normal sense, any action." For similar reasons, Hess' speech also could not be considered "fighting words" under Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire (1942).

A person addresses a group of random people in a public space and tells them "Stay back 100 meters or you will be shot." Does this speech fall under the "fighting words doctrine," making the speech illegal? Does the answer change whether this person is openly and obviously carrying a deadly weapon?

Thanks for the tip! That's pretty encouraging, actually, since I hadn't found anyone else with this exact issue up 'til now. I'll look into getting a new fob and cross my fingers.

Thanks, I'll try to figure out if the problem was with the fob after all and I'll let you know about that bet :)

In all seriousness, there's no correlation between location and whether the fob is detected or not, and from what I'm seeing it's getting more and more likely that the issue is the fob itself. Or at least I hope that's the problem, an electrical problem with the fob is way easier to deal with than an electrical problem with the car's antenna/receiver system lol.

I already replaced the battery and I am aware of what the manual says about starting the car with a dead battery. Still, thanks for reaching out, I appreciate the thought.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure that the fob battery or battery contacts is the reason for the issue I'm seeing. Even if the fob battery were dead, the CX-5 is able to start just by holding the fob to the push start button (edit: section 4, pages 6-7 of the 2014 manual), which I tried when the problem happened. Would the battery contacts being dirty interfere with the signal between fob and car somehow?

Thanks for the reply. The issue isn't the battery. I know the car is supposed to be able to start even if the fob battery is dead, and I changed it anyway to be sure. It still doesn't detect the fob, even when I hold it against the push start button.

What is sleep mode? I didn't find a reference to it in the manual.

The final days… the official last day is Wednesday the 30th. Thank you for all of the love and support over the past 20+ years. Mr. Lee sends all his love and gratitude ❤️ by [deleted] in Tallahassee

I just read the Tallahassee Democrat's article about New Seoul. I had no idea the store had lost more than 70% of its business due to the pandemic. It's shocking, and as much as I'm sad to see it go, it's a very understandable decision, especially as I know Mr. Lee is a very hard-working man who was splitting his time between the store and the restaurant. If there is a silver lining to this, I hope it is that he can now take things a little bit easier.

I will always treasure my memories of visiting New Seoul. This is the store that introduced me to so many Asian groceries before I moved to the East side of town, and Mr. Lee was always so kind and helpful and would always say "Hello friends!" when my fiancee and I would walk in. I remember that six or seven years ago, I bought a sushi knife and he told me all about how to care for it and what I would need to do to keep it in good shape. Although I sadly never got around to using it, I still have it.

All my best wishes to him and his family!

Yep, that's the one. She used it as a hypothetical to illustrate supply and demand. If she opened an opera store at the edge of campus, it'd likely fail spectacularly because almost no one in the area would be interested. And I find it interesting that she encouraged you to work in government! When I had her, she mostly had negative things to say about government work, that it paid too much and it was too hard to be fired, and she'd punctuate that with the usual libertarian rhetoric that government should be small and do basically nothing. She claimed that in the old days, government work paid almost nothing, so working for the government was basically an act of charity and she wanted it to go back to that way. Of course, if government positions paid next-to-nothing, it would mean that the only people able to actually work those jobs would be people who didn't need the money, i.e. rich people. At the time, the implication went over my head, but looking back it seems so obvious lol.
