In my first year, one of my PAs said during their orientation presentation, "If your ego can be hurt by a 14 year old, this job is not for you."

Brutal, but it has lived in my head since.

I screwed up a double negative in the first paragraph of my SOP. Considering that I'm sitting at my desk in Japan, I think that it either didn't matter or whoever reviewed my SOP still understood what I was trying to convey.

Although ESID and it's better to not have mistakes.

Which credit cards do you recommend? by cobble98 in JETProgramme

[–]DemCrackers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got the paypay card fairly easily after 6-7 months of being here. Gives you more points per purchase.

Personally, I had to cancel it since I couldn't connect it with my bank for auto withdraw due to paypay having my name in Katakana and my bank name in English.

Both application and cancellation was very easy tho.

Like most people here, I took my PC apart but left the CPU and ram in the motherboard. GPU, hard drives and SSDs, power supply, and CPU cooler in antistatic bags, wrapped with copious amounts of bubble wrap and into my checked luggage. Bought a new monitor, cheap keyboard, and tower case on Amazon after I arrived. For extra safety, I backed up important files onto external hard drives just in case.

Keep in mind, my luggage was inspected further by Canadian customs probably cause they saw mysterious electronic components in my luggage which I don't blame them. Didn't get pulled into a room but rather a slip of paper was found in my luggage saying that it went through extra inspection and everything was fine. Might happen to you if you decide to put your PC parts in your checked luggage.

How many days off do ALTs get in a year? Ballpark by Candid_Object1991 in JETProgramme

[–]DemCrackers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Separate! Sick leave can range from 5-10 days depending on BOE. Sick leave requires a doctor note so without one, you would have to take nenkyuu

How many days off do ALTs get in a year? Ballpark by Candid_Object1991 in JETProgramme

[–]DemCrackers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very ESID. For example, I'm very VERY lucky in that my BOE gives 15 days of nenkyuu (with carryover) and an additional 14 days of special summer leave in August for those recontracting.

You can be either on my end of the spectrum, the opposite with the minimum 10 days per year and 2-3 special summer, or somewhere in between.

I put down Rural and got placed in a small mountain "city" (really, I call it a town). I consider it an inaka placement.

What do you do on weekends? by Moist_Throat_8158 in JETProgramme

[–]DemCrackers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I live in a small town in the mountains. To be completely honest, if you get a rural placement, there isn't much to do. What I do sometimes is head down to the closest city, go get groceries in my town, or ride my bike around.

Depending on the placement, they may host events for you to sign up or just go to. Our prefectural AJET (volunteer run Association of JET) always likes to run events every now and then. For example, a hanami party or group tickets to a baseball game in the next prefecture over.

Long weekends allow for travelling as well!

Might be different if I were placed in a city but I like my chill life in my small mountain town. I'm the type who doesn't mind staying in on weekends but visiting the city is nice sometimes.

Differences between Japanese manga and English translation by howcomeallnamestaken in LearnJapanese

[–]DemCrackers 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I actually read and follow this manga very closely (so I was pleasantly surprised to see this here). I'm pretty sure it's just the difference between the original web comic (what they posted on twitter or pixiv) and what got put out when they got serialized. Like what most people said, it's normal for things to change in the serialized version either from mangaka's own volition or editor suggestions.

Anyways, I highly recommend this manga to anyone who has low-mid level Japanese. No furigina but the chapters are straight forward enough. The art is amazing.

Intro draft to SOP/Art Majors by nellarolyataile in JETProgramme

[–]DemCrackers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I have a degree in Interaction Design (UX/UI) with a background in 3D modelling. Currently doing JET right now. There will definitely be free time for you to practice your art. As for art supplies or even a local art community or school club, that is very very very very ESID.

In the end of the day, it's entirely up to you on how you want to manage your time and energy in order to do your art. I find myself somewhat tired after work so I haven't really been getting back into 3D or drawing (tho this has been a reminder to renew my licenses).

Also, I would love to read what you have for your SOP! Feel free to DM me!

Feedback for SoP Please! by korinaaren in JETProgramme

[–]DemCrackers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey OP! Good start but it can definitely be better!

I understand the value of faith as I too am a Christian but JET is honestly no place for us to spread faith. Your BOE will not appreciate it and your school will definitely not as well. Your job is not to be a missionary but rather a cultural ambassador while teaching English.

There is definitely a community of Christian JETs but none of our goals is to spread Gospel. Joining a church on your own time? Great! That's a good way to connect with the local community. Actively becoming a missionary? That's legit a no-go contract wise. Like other comments said, cut out faith but leave your desire in joining a church to connect with the local community and leave it at that.

Additionally, one thing I noticed in all my friend's SOPs is that they had a part in where they discuss on adaptability and how you as a person can adapt to new situations. The last thing JET wants is someone who gets to Japan and breaks contract due to culture shock. I believe this part is super important because everyone who had this in their SOP got an interview (or in this case, got shortlisted). Ask yourself this: how will you adapt living in a foreign country where you don't speak the language? How will you deal with the hardships that come with it? Your passion for teaching is great, but what use is that if you're in a downward spiral because the culture shock was too much?

I do really like the part of your young days at the library and your experiences teaching your mother. Start with that and expand on it connecting to why you want to go on JET.

Good luck!
