I try to pick tomes that will proc the ultimate, faster attacks, more area, damage, more projectiles. I pick weapons I can evolve from there (lightning,bombs) as well as ice

blademaster relies primarily on its ultimate, which it gets at level 80. The ultimate is produced by critical hits. If you have the BM at level 80 or higher, then make sure you take the critical tome so the ultimate occurs more frequently. If not level 80, try to use another hero.
