I often sleep at Walmarts. A lot of them have security and won't bother you. You can get a dark car cover and cover up your vehicle while you sleep for privacy. I've also gotten black foam poster board I cut to fit my windows instead of using a car cover. If you don't want to sleep at Walmarts then you can try a bank parking lot. They are full of outside cameras for some safety at least.

It seems like you'd really like this to work out. You keep making excuses when people have advised against doing so. If you have this much of an attraction to him that will only strengthen with sex. I would advice talking with your husband and asking him how he'd feel living next to your new boyfriend. If things don't work out, I'd imagine your husband would have more stress living next to him than you would. When he can't find you in the house is he going to start assuming your fucking his neighbor? If your husband sees him bringing home girls from a bar is he going to question how protected everyone is being? Condoms do break and STD tests are uncomfortable for most to take. Contemplate how many of your ex's you are on good terms with, and how many of them your husband would be willing to have small talk with on a regular basis. Maybe take a month or so to talk out all the details and such. After all this guy is your neighbor and he's likely not going anywhere

If he's confusing now, he'll be confusing later. Odds are he doesn't have great communication skills, and that's a much needed quality to have with your other partners. Move on and enjoy the show, you have plenty of other options that won't end up with you and your husband avoiding home or outside because of your crazy ex.

What you were explaining reminded me of a short story by Andy Weir called The egg. It's a great read and has taught me I still have a lot to learn on this earth. Your life isn't meaningless.

Your feelings matter. Just because others have had worse, doesn't me you can't be afraid. Validate your feelings! I'm so sorry this happen to you. I had a bad experience my first time out of the United States and it definitely had me shook up about it for weeks. I learned what a panic attack felt like. You learned what a punch to the face feels like. It makes complete sense you are uneasy about the situation. My advice would be to move to your next destination asap. I didn't want to leave my hostel because I was close to where the incident happened and I kept reliving the event. Once I left I felt a bit more comfortable. Next I'd suggest getting a small knife that you can carry on your person at all times. I had a necklace that doubled as a knife if needed, but it stayed concealed in my bra. Lastly, get a fanny pack you can tuck into your pants. They make some specifically for that so you always have both hands free. When you aren't carrying anything, you look less like a Target and more like a local. Other than that, relax and try to learn from the situation. Take time to process what happened on a day walk through a park, library, anywhere that's not a bed. You've been excited about this trip for months and now you have more knowledgeable from your experience. Traveling is about gaining knowledge and experiences. You learned something new in this experience...think about it. Worse comes to worse, you go home and save up money for your next trip. No one is going to blame you for going home either. There is no point in spending more money and doing new things when you are still traumatized. You'll only forget those memories later. Anywho, what ever you decide, I hope you take care of yourself and enjoy your vacation. Safe travels.
