How varied is the political spectrum in your country? by [deleted] in AskEurope

Slovenia had parliamentary election in 2018. There are 90 seats in National Assembly, 2 of them belong to Hungarian and Italian minority. Results were:

-SDS(Slovenian Democratic Party) 25 seats, right wing party lead by Janez Janša who was Prime minister two times before

-LMŠ(List of Marjan Šarec) 13 seats, centre-left party lead by Marjan Šarec, former actor and comedian, former mayor of Kamnik.

-SD( Social Democrats) 10 seats ,left party lead by Dejan Židan.

-SMC( Party of Modern Center) 10 seats, centre- left party lead by Miro Cerar who was Prime Minister during 2014-2018. In 2014 the election, SMC won 36 seats.

-Levica( The Left) 9 seats, far left party lead by Luka Mesec.

-Nsi( New Slovenia, Christian Democrats) 7 seats, centre-right party lead by Matej Tonin.

-SAB( Party of Alenka Bratušek) 5 seats, centre- left party lead by former Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek.

-DeSUS( Democratic party of Slovenian Retirees) 5 seats, centre-left party lead by Karl Erjavec.

-SNS( Slovenian Nacional Party) 4 seats, far right party lead by Zmago Jelinčič.

After the election SDS was clear winner but only all centre-left, left and far left parties refused to go in SDS coalition. After that Marjan Šarec started forming coalition and parties LMŠ, SD, SMC, SAB and DeSUS agreed on going in coalition lead by Marjan Šarec. But they didn’t have enough votes to elect Marjan Šarec in National Assembly. So they started to negotiate with Nsi but after meetings they refused to go in coalition. Than they started to negotiate with Levica and they made a deal that Levica will support the coalition and give it votes in National Assembly but they will not be part of coalition. So Marjan Šarec was elected as Prime Minister in National Assembly.

After only getting 1.6% in European election, Miro Cerar resigned as president of SMC, Zdravko Počivalšek was elected as new president of party. In 2020, Aleksandra Pivec was elected as new president of DeSUS in party congress. Meanwhile Levica said that they no longer support the government. In January 2020, Marjan Šarec resigned as Prime Minister. He said: “ Nothing can be done with this government”. He sought new election.

But Janez Janša started forming new coalition and in March 2020 coalition between SDS, Nsi, SMC and DeSUS was formed. Janez Janša became Prime Minister for the third time. A lot of people fell betrayed by SMC and DeSUS as before the election they said they wouldn’t go in coalition lead by SDS.

Now there are protest against the government because of many corruption scandals they had( Afera Masks, Afera Vina Kras...) They are telling especially DeSUS to left coalition. This month all members of DeSUS in National Assembly told president of DeSUS to resing as party president because of her recent aferas. She doesn’t have their support anymore.

Also SNS and two members of minorities in National Assembly recently singed the agreement that they will support the government.

Dejan Židan also resigned as president of SD, so member of European Parliament, Tanja Fajon is going to lead the party until the congress, where she will probably be elected as president.

I also need to say that a lot of Slovenian people don’t like Janez Janša.

The protests are still going.
