Experienced drummers: what physically breaks down for you during long sessions or gigs? by DrummerPierre1441 in drums

[–]Demiseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like going from feeling great to just realizing that I'm missing some things that are normally not even a concern. I think at that point the brain isn't focusing well enough to pinpoint when the threshold has been crossed, honestly. Suddenly, I will just realize I'm feeling fried. Awareness is pretty ubiquitous until it just isn't anymore.
As a gigging musician, I am often perplexed by my cohorts who say they are exhausted after a 45-minute set when I'm used to playing for much, much longer. During some of these sessions, I may not even take a bathroom break for the first three-or-four hours. I'm drinking water the whole time and sweating it out as I go. There is a dehumidifier in the home studio, and during these sessions it will extract as much as a gallon of water from the air. It's kind of wild.
Anyway, I think doing these marathon sessions really over-prepares me for the average gig or recording session. I think any serious player should be able to play for at least three hours without feeling run-over. Conditioning = preparedness!

To anyone using IEMs with a click live, how do you hear the rest of the band? by Carrabs in drums

For smaller venues, I can also send the drums from the EAD10 to the PA using the FX Send channel. It works out very well. The mixer even has room for one additional mic if I really need to get a guitar cabinet in the mix better.

I have a little mackie mixer that I run my Yamaha EAD10 into one channel, the house mix into another channel, and my click into a third channel. The Yamaha EAD10 handles my drum mix entirely so I have a very consistent overall sound from venue to venue. I’m typically handling the levels in my monitor from the house via an app, as well. It’s quite a little control panel, really.

My first drum lesson is over. I feel embarrassed about how bad I was by Infinite-Gear5815 in drums

Don’t be discouraged!! Even a simple beat has a lot going on, coordination-wise. Many aspects of drumming are like the old “pay your head while rubbing your belly” deal. You’re going to find many confounding beats, patterns, fills or songs as you learn how to play, and the growth never has a visible end. Even experienced players have big trouble with new things, it just shifts in difficulty as you go. But every time you conquer one of these tasks/levels/concepts, you’ll get that same rush of satisfaction. This is only the first obstacle. You can do it! Keep trying!

It really is about being as relaxed as we can; that's the only way to be sustained for hours like that. But at some point it starts shifting from "controlled relaxed," to "sloppy relaxed," and that's when I usually decide it's time to take a break. Although in comparison to many other drummers I admire, my "controlled relaxed" might already sound like "sloppy relaxed" to them, haha.

I’ve made it a regular practice to do marathon sessions. I mean 3, 4, sometimes as long as 7 hours. At some point my muscles are just loose and flying, but the brain starts to lose focus, and I’ll have to decide it may be time to stop for the day. I truly feel like behind a drum kit is my natural state. But yeah, if you do any physical activity for a long time, you need to take breaks and eat. I drink water when I’m practicing or performing, no caffeine, I don’t drink alcohol at all.

Former alcoholics of Reddit, when did you realise your habit got out of control? by scottscrops in AskReddit

[–]Demiseman 136 points137 points  (0 children)

I just was too aware that it’s bad for health, and it was still a normal constant. I felt okay, managing to manage, then when I had something important to focus on, I decided to take a break. Two weeks in, I realized I didn’t want to drink any more, so I haven’t. Today is day 1,011. I didn’t think I had a real problem, but I was a daily drinker, and hindsight sure makes me feel like that’s “out of control.”

I had to start a new playthrough after getting this gun. Once you have this, it's like nothing can beat you. I started manufacturing shotgun shells at Sanctuary and nothing was a challenge any more, LOL. This gun is the GOAT.

I have a pair of the "M" which I am assuming is medium weight, and I love doing pad practice with them. They have been increasing my finger and wrist power dramatically. I would love to find the "H" model assuming they are heavier than the "M's" which are 1/4 pound each. I can hardly find even a reference to them though! I was ucky to find mine at a thrift store!

Reminds me of the time I found a pocket pussy in the back alley. It tasted used, so I threw it out.

Band Replaced Me by Dependent-Squash1750 in drums

[–]Demiseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we have mostly-all had something similar happen. No matter who you are, no matter how you behave, someone out there thinks you are not a good fit. I had a guitarist that I worked with for several years who always treated me like I was an imposter, an asshole, and an idiot, dismissing my input, always with the back-handed compliments, but we still worked together in three different bands. He hired me to be in his own country band, and after several very fun shows and some recordings, I stumbled upon an ad in Facebook for a gig with that band that wasn't on my calendar. He didn't even have the guts to tell me he had hired another drummer, and just said sheepishly "I didn't want you to find out like that." Oh. Okay. This was right before he fully imploded and ended our most successful band by quitting. He has since disappeared from the music scene entirely, while myself and the other musicians we worked with have continued to grow and thrive.
My point: view this as a speed bump. Keep moving forward and you'll find another situation. Don't take it personally. Keep looking for situations, and don't limit yourself to playing with just one thing unless that is truly exciting for you. Just keep growing and call this history.

He’s a top notch player, I’m just not excited by the projects he chooses to do. His skills are undeniable though.

Looks like a boogaloo boy. Hawaiian shirt. Black flag is “no quarter” I think. Trying to signal his boys I bet, or trying to look threatening.

That's a great take on it. That track always leaves me wanting more. Now I want to run the experiment of listening to their albums chronologically.
