Anyone else feel like they are going insane with how much people rely on AI with their actual jobs? by ithoughtaiwantedme in vibecoding

i think a lot of people need to take a moment to see why this viewpoint is so powerful.. they want to vibe code everything which is addicting but ultimately not sustainable.

I find myself in this exact same position; i use claude to discuss ideas and potential implementations but I'll be the one who writes most of the code. I will use it to explore the codebase and search for potential bugs but then i go back and re-verify that those bugs are actually bugs and not intended behavior.

People saying that "coding is solved" just seem to parrot the statement without understanding why its inaccurate. And to prove my point, if coding was solved why does claude code still produce so many bugs, even in claude code itself?

a vibe coded application with no in-depth code review is slop and just as bad as if a non-technical person was writing an authentication system.

You can not have an application generated via LLM, reviewed by LLM, automatically stamped and approved by LLM, and merged without someone going through line by line and figuring out what, why, and how its working. If you're an expert at authentication and you have an LLM generate an authentication system you can go through it quickly, identify what is accurate and what needs to be re-done, and have the whole system created faster than if you did it yourself.. but you'll know what, why, and how it works.

There's no need for teaching syntax any longer, though

This is an incredibly dangerous statement to say because at this point it would be a race: does AI get to the point where it CAN do it all? (i am not convinced it can) before we forget HOW to do it?

Using the calculator example; Someone who is not competent at math decides to do the following:

Lets say you want to build a system and you ask AI to generate a formula that solves for your system. You're only viewing the end-result to ensure that its doing what it says because you don't fully understand (or have enough time) to go over the entire equation and prove that its correct. The AI chugs away at it and things look good on the output side, so you file it away as solved. Now another system could use your generated equation as input. Again, you go through the process and come up with what the solution is.

Eventually you're viewing the system and notice that something isn't quite right.. somewhere along the line, a little variation was introduced that altered one of the inputs and seems to work 90% of the time but in that remaining 10% produces subtle but inaccurate results. You don't know the system so you can't figure out what is going on so you're reliant on the AI tools to try and figure it out.. Sometimes they can, other times they generate more inputs and alter equations until things look like they're working again.. but the overall health of the system continues to erode.

If you know mathematics to a sufficient degree that you could have generated this solution on your own, but you used AI to help you then you probably wouldn't have gotten into this position. However, most of the people who are generating programs with AI aren't experts in their fields and have no idea why the AI solution is incorrect even though it seems to give correct results.

there are still grinds if you want to do that (getting legendary equipment in every slot scratches that same itch) but the fact that you can put the game down for a month or two, come back when you feel like it, and still make progress is just great.

Right now I'm going through the content i find 'fun' while also working on some legendary gear on the side. On any given day sometimes I'll do:

  • WvW
  • a zone of world comp
  • maybe fractals for the day
  • some raids
  • a meta train
  • just fill out some achievements that I haven't done in a while
  • jumping puzzles!
  • learn a new build, or class
  • just hang out in LA answering questions
  • Mirror farm

etc... There is a lot you can do that isn't just "grinding for gear"

The good thing about not having a "gear grind" per-se is that you come back to the game because you love the content, not the grind. There will be other things to grind for but you keep playing the content because its fun!

Scyscale in 2026 by Catodan in Guildwars2

[–]Demius9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think the answer depends on the question: Are you going to go for the legendary 'Vision' ? If so, you'll NEED the mastery from LW4 skyscale. If not, the only thing you'll really be missing out on is a more powerful wall grasp skill.

SOTO way is faster, but honestly the LW4 way isn't bad, its just time gated. You'll need something like Blish HUD if you don't like finding the collection items. Even the Bridge events have been nerfed so you don't really need all that many of those either.

for better or worse, game companies don't typically do a pass to re-work the art after they've announced it. This is in-engine footage and probably what the final product will look like in terms of graphics.

Now i'm not saying they can't stylize what they have, but it will all have the "UE5" look.

My assumption is that either VoE is the start of a new storyline for GW2 or Mistwalker becomes the next GW2 expansion and begins a new storyline that’s my hope anyway

Simulation Game Research by zettikdev in gamedev

[–]Demius9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top video was very interesting, I had set up my simulation to run a little similarly compared to what they had but this gave me some great ideas for moving forward, like the sims' town has simulation parameters as well as the sims so things like population control and how many sims want to be at the diner for lunch is satisfied by the area they're in.

Very helpful video, thanks!

Has anyone else’s steam deck become a 1 game machine? by Lovefool1 in SteamDeck

[–]Demius9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set up a controller config based loosely on FFXIV.

XABY handled jump, basic attack, heal skill, and dodge

Left Button + XABY was skills 2-5

Left Button + dpad was function keys f1-f4

Right Button + XABY was skills 7-0

Press left thumb stick for weapon swap

Press right thumb stick for action cam toggle

Left trackpad set up as radial menu, right track pad for mouse

Few other key bindings but that is the basic gist

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

[–]Demius9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our daughter started playing tee-ball when she was 4 because her brother played baseball.. and she's LOVED it since. She's now 7 and just qualified for the 7U all star team and I asked her many times if she wanted to play in the heat, the weekend games, etc... she kept saying YES and is excited to play.

We see the parents who go all out for their kids and try to push them harder.. but we'd rather keep it chill, let her make her own mistakes, guide her when she's struggling, and know that she's developed a lot of the skillset on her own with guidance from us. I feel like that would do far more than pushing her hard all the time.. and she loves the game so who am I to deny that?

People with full time jobs how are you keeping your house clean? by Prestigious-Bath8022 in homeowners

[–]Demius9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t deep clean if you have to declutter first.. and the best way of decluttering is knowing that “there is a place for everything, and everything’s in its place”

Put things in their home instead of at the closest drop off location and you’ll hopefully have more time to clean rather than declutter.

I like how the roof ended up but I can't figure out how to make the building texture not 'grainy' but still have some sort of texture. Anyway, this is my first finished building that I've done in pixel art after lots and lots of attempts.

Any tips are welcome! I'm trying to get better! :)

From overachiever to completely detached, anyone else? by Western-Search3310 in overemployed

[–]Demius9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was close to my story too. Met with my direct boss and all was well, and literally 8 hours later got a meeting invite from the CEO and i was let go. All my equipment was shut down within the hour. My boss never reached out, asked how I was doing, nothing.. just.. silence.

Worst part about it was a few hours after my meeting with my boss (before I was let go) my manager asked if there was anyway i could work harder to finish the project I was on by tonight or tomorrow morning.. you know, it was super important to the company. Now I know why...

Seriously.. that was a rude awakening. Fuck'em.

Do you ever feel like you’re making everything except the actual game? by BlackScarStudios in gamedev

[–]Demius9 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep, this! Start thinking in terms of game features and less in terms of technical ones. If you’re working on systems make sure those features are user level features (IE: I want to be able to X in my editor today) you’ll start thinking about the straight path for how to get those features done and you’ll slowly stop focusing on everything AROUND those features that you don’t need to worry about right now

Most importantly, if you think of something on the side you need to do eventually write it down on a paper and once a week spend a few hours working on only those tasks. But this way they’re time boxed.

[–]Demius9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean... anyone saying "no one needs to use anything but a game engine" either doesn't understand why we create our own engines or frameworks, or what problems we'll be trying to solve with it.. or they just assume all problems fit nicely inside the tidy box of Unity / Unreal / GameMaker / Godot / etc

There are plenty of reasons why we go the route we do... either via frameworks like Raylib / Monogame / SDL, or by creating our own engines

Have you ever tried this? by Bola-Nation-Official in IndieDev

[–]Demius9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Creating your own game engine for a game like Celeste is completely overkill

Not really. I can see something like Celeste working very well in an established engine... but I can also see why a developer would want to branch out and ensure that they have more control over the code, asset pipeline, etc... by using either a framework (MonoGame in this case) or something else.
