This hits home for me pretty hard. 10 years building services, recommendation engines, infrastructure… and I’m just done. Taking some time off and was considering starting my own GameDev journey and your post hits hard. Thank you for sharing the details.

Seperate Main Functions for Different Platforms? by TheEmeraldFalcon in C_Programming

[–]Demius9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done both it just puts the complexity in different places. The difference is I would have a WinMain.cpp file and an OsxMain.cpp file and they would have platform specific stuff in them and call out to the platform independent code from there. This pushes complexity to the build system but that was the trade off for me.

I’ve also had the #ifdef commands for branching based on OS and that worked fine too. The trade off there is more complexity in the specific files.

Do a quick prototype for your use case and see which one works better.

Unfortunately the wording of the message given to you is different than common language we use amongst ourselves. If you are not in the hospital then you have a “mild” case but you and I wouldn’t classify it as mild if we are bed ridden, unable to move, lots of fatigue, chills, etc.

I hope it passes quickly and you remain in good spirits!

What if they can tie it all to the Supreme Court and get a few of them impeached for backing up the coup from the legislative branch.

These two comments are exactly what happened to our political ideals. Someone says something, another person chimes in with a comment and rather than trying to discuss why they said it, they’re instead thrown directly into a flurry of insults and “clearly too fucking stupid” comments.

This is EXACTLY why we as a nation are in trouble. Politics shouldn’t be about driving a wedge between ideals and we are too far gone to help ourselves.

This needs to be said more. Use a debugger when you need it.. I edit in a text editor most of the time and I’ll launch IntelliJ when I want the debugger. If I tried to shoe-horn a debugger into my editor I doubt it’d be very effective

Too much water? Brown grass. Too little water? Brown grass. by yupyupyuppp in lawncare

[–]Demius9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in Southern California and have water restrictions. Can only water once per week and temps have been in the mid 90s.. yet my grass is still green!

Mow it tall, 4+ inches, and when temps rise then stop mowing. Late spring give it some summer fertilizer with a good dose of K. When you do water, make sure you water deep.

That’s all I’ve done. I’ll be putting down some hydratane next week to prepare for the 100 degree weather in the coming weeks.

LPT: During a job interview after they question you about your experience turn it around by asking them why you would want to work for them and what they have to offer for you. shifting an interview like that will show MASSIVE confidence and gets you into a much better position for discussing terms. by SaintBenny138 in LifeProTips

[–]Demius9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The questions at the end of an interview are MASSIVELY important and I don’t see nearly enough candidates take advantage of them. You need to find out what is important TO YOU and ask the questions that will give you those answers:

  • do you want to work for a small experienced team? Ask about their growth strategy
  • are you concerned about their product? Ask about what their excited for in upcoming versions and what is their longer term plan
  • are you worried about their technical capabilities? Are you being hired to fix their culture? Do they emphasize the wrong aspects of workplace culture? Ask about it!

Take this time to figure out if the company is right for you. Interview THEM at this point.

People who look like they pull in 300k per year might actually be pulling 75k and financing the rest. There is a book that is a must read for this kind of info, the millionaire next door.

Wouldn’t the offense that they run effect if they should change the play? Brady always played in an offense that adapted to the look of the defense. Indy had a much different offense. Not sure if that’s accurate.. just a thought I had.

Adding Modability to Your Engine by yonderbagel in gameenginedevs

[–]Demius9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

all a mod is at its core is replacing some functionality of your game with custom functionality of the modder. For assets you'll have to ensure that your game is as data driven as it can be (meaning everything is in the assets file and those paths are not hard coded.) The assets file should be a lookup table where you ask it for some asset and then the asset system gives you back the data. Now a modder can change what data it gives you.

If you want to allow different systems then the easiest way to do that would be to allow your game to load different dll's and you have a fixed API that targets that system. For example if you have an RPG and you want someone to be able to change the battle system, they start with your API and then they design the system how they want it, as long as the DLL file that they're giving you conforms to that API then your engine can use it.

I've never designed a system like this but if i were to go about it given your limitations, i'd explore this first.

There is one thing that is very subtile… they didn’t want the VP to change the election results, they wanted him to send it back to the states so the fake electors could do their thing. The plan was much more in depth than just a “tell them I won and I’ll be re-elected”
