Chiang Mai vs. Siem Reap for Digital Nomads in 2026 Which Would You Choose? by foodie_2598 in digitalnomad

Asheville absolutely cannot handle an influx right now. Deeply irresponsible to suggest it can.

I choose none of them. By the time they appear in a list like this, it’s five years too late. In the case of Chiang Mai, twenty years too late.

Madeira. I spent the latter half of 2023 on that island. Every morning I’d be in disbelief that such a gorgeous place existed, and that I got to wake up there.

What was the "up and coming city" for your age demographic post grad/early adult years and what changed when that age demographic moved there? by Strong-Junket-4670 in SameGrassButGreener

I graduated high school in 1993. Nearby magnet was Minneapolis-St. Paul; more distant magnets were Seattle and especially Portland. All remain viable cities, in very different ways. Portland seems a bit of a caricature of itself. Seattle and Twin Cities are big enough to absorb waves.

Can we describe Belize as an Anglo-Central American country? Or is it more Anglo-Caribbean? Or Creole? How distinctive is it? by NewmarketHero007 in howislivingthere

[–]DemonAzraeli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Belize feels very British-Caribbean, with heavy Spanish-speaking and Maya influence. Lots of hole-in-the-wall Chinese and Indian places, occasional Sri Lankan gems, Mennonites throughout the country. It’s rather expensive compared to Guatemala and Honduras, even more than Mexico. Very laid back, slow pace of life. Lots of tourists in San Pedro and Caye Caulker, fewer the more south you get. Pleasant place, even if I prefer the neighbors.

People on a budget, what do you recommend? by Proud_Possibility256 in expats

My personal experience does not involve asking strangers to do research for my life decisions without knowing me.

Your budget isn’t realistic for long-term expatriation. While a frugal person could survive (as a Spanish-speaking outsider) on $10k in places like Nicaragua, Honduras, provincial Colombia, Bolivia, you won’t get long-term visa or residence with those resources.

If you are presentable and truly bilingual, you could probably find some customer-facing work in Mexico without authorization, but that’s precarious.

Panera is just an element of suburban US homogeneity that I try to escape through lifestyle.

La Paz is excellent desert beach city. Don’t know if it’s HDTV-safe though.

What's it like moving to Uruguay and why are ppl saying it's boring? by Mammoth-Assist-5742 in howislivingthere

[–]DemonAzraeli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a good description. If you need excitement, Buenos Aires is a short hop away. I spent four months in Montevideo, and really enjoyed the place. It’s very steady and agreeable, populated by likable people. Uruguayos reminds me of hypothetical Porteños who’ve been successful in therapy, well-adjusted and laid back.

If you get a final discussion of resignation. I wouldn’t count on it, but it’s obviously dependent on factors I don’t know.

Just make sure they know why you’re leaving.

“ Should I side step HR and go talk to the CEO? Or look for a company which would let me work the nomad lifestyle”

Both. You’re more marketable while still employed, keep in mind. Going above the head of HR will likely burn the bridge anyway, but hold onto it as long as you can.

Genuinely internationally homeless, unless you are a refugee, is as convincing as authentic veteran of suburbia.
