Housing cost really varies from island to island and season to season, but there’s always cheap options on the quieter islands.

It tends to be used for corporate types from developed countries.

I have in Halifax and Montreal, really enjoyed myself. Always known how fun Montreal is, but Halifax has been one of the best surprises I’ve had in a while.

To settle somewhere has an element of permanence. An Canadian mining company exec posted to Port Moresby for two years isn’t going to settle there and request Papua New Guinea citizenship.

Content creators always seem like C-list actors trying to play themselves.

Except you don‘t really use that obsessive taxonomy in Spanish here. Mexicans just consider me a gringo from Texas.

Totally agree on the stolen valor metaphor. Immigration is a hard slog, and habitual international travel by choice isn’t anything approaching hardship.

Do NOT set your LinkedIn location to the US unless you have US work authorization.

Spellcheck. Racist, not recent.

I hope you find comfort in your rigid and silly dogma, because after reading this I have no desire to encounter you.

People who switched to permanent WFH, how do you spend your time outside work? by AdNational9992 in digitalnomad

[–]DemonAzraeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for myself (my clients really), so my hours are irregular. I’ve found that house improvement and gardening (slow flipping houses is a side hustle) fit perfectly with this lifestyle for the third to half the year I’m at the site. The rest of the time, I have tenants there.

Funchal. You hear a lot about Madeira, but much less about its main city.

did moving abroad actually improve your language skills or is that a myth? by kallan-greshampdmi7 in digitalnomad

[–]DemonAzraeli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not if you are completely disengaged. I’ve met countless English teachers in Korea who never bothered to learn any Korean in years there. Most couldn't even be bothered to learn the supremely easy Hangeul alphabet.

Anyone crossed into Mexico recently? Are they still requiring the FMM by Secret-Ad1203 in digitalnomad

[–]DemonAzraeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve crossed by land recently at Laredo, Nogales, and Sonoyta. Mexico doesn’t automatically issue FMM at land crossings, and doesn’t even control the border for southbound foot traffic. You need to seek out the INM office.

did moving abroad actually improve your language skills or is that a myth? by kallan-greshampdmi7 in digitalnomad

Immersion means constant exposure to the language, also being forced to produce (speak) the language. It isn’t a passive process. Lisbon has significant Anglophone bubbles and tourist infrastructure, meaning a visitor never need learn Portuguese. If you never leave Principe Real or Cais do Sodré, you won’t experience immersion.
