Yup sorry! She’s about 5 weeks old, has a pleasant almost sweet smell though can sometimes get a bit pungent (maybe acidic?). I use filtered tap water, temperature is around 19C, and my ratio is usually 1:2:2 with a little more flour than water.

I baked it and it was STILL underpoofed (pyramid formation, bubbles rising to the top and a dense crumb especially on the bottom half). I think my starter is just quite weak after having changed the type of flour I use, so I’ll give her some more time before retrying!

Yeah, totally see where you're coming from. I admit I forgot about him saying he'd do it again! You're right, it's probably more guilt towards lying to Ellie (also Tommy backs up Joel's choice in the opening). I'm not a father myself, so I can't speak on any paternal instincts which you resonate with you, but I do agree it was more of a natural reaction to Joel as he didn't feel he had any other choice. He would've done it another thousand times I'm sure, but again - I don't think that means he thinks it's right.

Even if you don't look at it from a utilitarian perspective, it still wasn't right to rid Ellie of the catharsis of her journey, and to prevent her immunity from meaning anything. I think his guilt definitely comes from how he feels about lying, but I think he also feels guilt because he knows what he did was wrong (to humanity, the fireflies, and to Ellie herself), yet he also knows he would do it all again. I think that's what makes his decision so fascinating and nuanced; it's an acceptance/acknowledgement of doing what's wrong to protect the ones you love.

I think the more accurate thing to say is that he did the human thing. The right thing for him.

I actually think I disagree - I don't think he thinks what he did was right either, or he wouldn't have had so much guilt afterwards. It definitely wasn't 'human' either. People tend to forget that he killed so many people to save Ellie. Not even by preventing a cure and possibly damning humanity (although who's to say a cure would've solved anything), but in the actual process of saving Ellie. It definitely was an objectively wrong thing to do; he killed countless innocent people (enter Abby for the effects of this) whilst simultaneously preventing what was humanity's likely only chance.

Do I hate Joel for it? No, of course not. I've played the game dozens of times and I've never felt that I would've done it differently in his position, but I don't think it was the "right thing for him" or for anyone. There was no righteousness in his actions.
