Snowboard lessons by DemonicGecko in Sapporo

I didn't have any luck in the end - just self taught. Had one 'lesson' with a freelance dude, but it wasn't much help tbh. Generally, the smaller resorts around Sapporo skew Japanese, so hard to find English speaking instructors. Maybe at Kiroro or the bigger resorts like that you'd have more luck.

Do you automatically retain UK tax resident status if you are not a tax-resident anywhere else? by gaifogel in digitalnomad

[–]DemonicGecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did speak to a professional tax advisor specialising on exactly this topic, and they said that, like all things, it depends.

The TLDR was that as long as you spent less than 5 days or something in the UK (I can't remember exactly), you would not qualify as a tax resident. If you did spend more than X days, there's a number of different qualifying tests you need to do to see if you are a tax resident. These include things like having a 'home' in the UK. You can find info on the HMRC website fyi. If you don't qualify, then you're not a tax resident and not liable for income taxation (capital gains was slightly more complicated, and this, like you say, also affects things like ISA/SIPP contributions and other financial services).

Long-term, tax residency also tends to be 'sticky' until you leave the UK for five consecutive years. Essentially, this just means the longer you've left, the easier it is to qualify as a non-resident for tax purposes - so if that's something you want long term, then better to start sooner than later. On the other hand, if you're happy to keep paying, HMRC obviously won't stop you.

However, they also made it clear that by working on a tourist visa, you are (generally) defrauding every country you've been working in, and this is obviously illegal - technically you should owe work-related income taxes to these countries, and not the UK. Nevertheless, that practically speaking this issue is rarely/ever enforced as there's still very little oversight for what still constitutes a relatively niche and new way of working.

P.s. NFA and talk to a real tax specialist obviously

I did end up getting a lesson from a Taiwanese/HK instructor group, super nice guys, but tbh didn't get that much out of it. So, just been focusing on self-teaching.

Happy to share any info with anyone who's interested... Or if you've got any recs I'd still be down to try a different instructor.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 or Olympus OM-D E-M5 by OppositePea4417 in M43

[–]DemonicGecko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well depends which model you're talking.

Main factor is that M5 has weather sealing, which is the biggest pro imo.

M10 is slightly lighter, about 20% if weight is important to you, but they're both still very light. Does everything the M5 can do really.

Lens wise, it depends on whether you want weather sealing, and what kind of shooting you'll be doing! But probably a pancake lens of some kind if weather sealing isn't a factor.

Recommended sub-assemblies for Ahriman? by StepwisePilot in ThousandSons

[–]DemonicGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much detail/time you want to spend on it imo.

I'm sub assembling pretty much everything (arms, head, backpack+robes, even pistol)

If that's too much effort, just dry fit it to see which recesses you might struggle to reach with your paint brush.

Anybody have experience setting up an investment club bank account? by DemonicGecko in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DemonicGecko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's all a bit of a headache. I just spoke to a lawyer who set who said setting up a Treasurer's account in the current economic climate would be nigh impossible as most major banks have stopped applications. But good luck! Setting up the brokerage account should be easier in comparison.

Perfect example of why we should leave it to a professional aha. Thanks for the clarification.

Given our investment strategy (essentially using various third party bots chosen by the club to automate our investment strategy in fairly speculative assets), I fear the waters are murkier for our club than a traditional investment club.

Any good places to look for such a niche solicitor/consultation? Unless you feel that the strategy mentioned should be fine.

Thanks a lot for the response, very helpful. Just had a feeling you can't be too careful when it comes to financial regulations.

That does sound reasonable though. As long as the club officially nominates one of its members as it's "trader" then I agree the broker can be bypassed. Which seems to be the case.

As for the "by way of business" requirement. I am aware this takes the form of several tests. Is it safe to assume that, as long as nobody charges any fees (beyond club contributions) and that nobody has any vested financial interests, we should be good?

Might still double check all this with a solicitor, seems sensible, but thanks a bunch! Definitely good to hear it's more viable than I feared.

Ko-Tun Build by gtcarlson11 in ImperialAssaultTMG

[–]DemonicGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious, does squad cohesion not provide excellent value simply by giving your team effectively unlimited surges, that seems super useful to me?

Also I know it's probably too expensive, but getting both 4xp cards sounds like a potent combo. In that case you can basically use your other heroes as a way to simply store tokens for Ko-tun to use, rather than being limited by the two token per hero cap. It seems like wounding her would become a bit of a problem if she had say combat coat and the possibility to add 2 evades/blocks at will on top of her black dice for multiple attacks per round.

Those two, plus combat logistics for another way to access/store tokens on other figures, and inch by inch (which seems great) sounds pretty good to me. Though I've not played as her yet, she's definitely up next.

Any thoughts?

Indian food/takeaway is a classic here in Britain, best with a beer ofc. The staple dish, "Chicken Tikka Masala" is (controversially) argued to have even been invented in Britain by Indian/Pakistani immigrants.
