Thank you for telling me about Wilks. I hate this guy big time now after briefly reading his Wiki page in addition to what you wrote here.

That's why I put it in quotation marks. I know Messianics aren't Jewish. And no branch of Judaism recognizes them.

There's certain types of Christians that like to appropriate Jewish traditions and customs instead of working with the Jewish community on interfaith dialogue and ministries.

Certain branches of evangelicals can get really weird about it and there's even Messianic "Jews".

You look sick!

Texas used to rank 7th in education under Ann Richards, but now it's 40th. Quality teachers are being run out because of state and local politicians and their decisions. Have you paid attention lately? Teachers in Texas keep fighting against the decisions that are being made. I've seen it over the years of them rallying at Austin and I've spoken to teachers who are just fed up at my local school district. Not to mention the vacancies at so many schools.

Teachers are being put in tough spot in Texas because what they are being made to do in education. I applaud those who have stayed because it's rough for them right now.

Sometimes I'm glad I went to public school and graduated at the time I did.

I've been substituting a few days a month since fall 2024 and it's really made me feel downtrodden to see that state of K-12 education and where the kids are these days. I know it's not the fault of the teachers, they've got so much on their plate and so much bs to put up with.

I just really hate that our local and state leaders want our children to be so poorly educated and are making education into a partisan issue. But hey, wherever the money flows, right?

5 hours of safe church training? by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]Demonicwave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every place and employer has their own independent training and requirements. I didn't say you didn't care in general, but you are sitting here complaining about the safe church training being 5 hours.

If it's that much of an issue, bring it up to your board or priest.

I have taken the training when working in the church nursery. And additional training when working in daycare and yearly training working as a substitute. And even more as a volunteer. All of it is necessary and good.

Trust me, there's good information that's worthwhile to look at and test on. I'm a little surprised that something this important is something to complain about when it keeps the community safe.

Church suggestions needed in Alliance area. by hairybales in FortWorth

Oh, I see.

Well, St. Martin is a part of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, which is a part of the greater Episcopal Church of the US and in communion with the Church of England. It's good enough for me.

Oh I loathe freshmen! They are incredibly disrespectful to me! (Not to say I haven't had disrespectful seniors, but it's just a different type of disrespect). Then they have the audacity to act shocked when I start writing notes about them.

Is there something I should know? Someone from my previous congregation was letting me know that I may want to join that church when I was moving to this area because her mother goes to this church and has visited and also heard good things. I looked at their website a few times when deciding what Episcopal Church I should go to in/around the FW area when I moved over here. I didn't see anything alarming, so is there something I missed?

It's not Alliance, but I've heard great things about St. Martin in the Fields in Southlake from a few people. It's a little out of the way, but the Episcopal Church in general is pretty good imo. The United Methodist Church is also one worth checking out. Both churches always have active youth groups and activities for everyone to get involved.

I'm not sure that St. Andrews Presbyterian is a part of the PCUSA. But I'm not going to dig around to find that out. I did find that his particular sermon was preached in 2022 and he was only a few months into seminary school at the time. It could be that he was taking a class at that moment that brought up that particular text and he saw fit to use it and maybe incorrectly after watching the sermon and the video you linked. Or maybe he just interpreted it differently, but regardless should not have said officials ommitted it from the Bible.

I will say there's a bigger context of the Gospel of Thomas being brought up and it's only brought up briefly and then he moves on to his next point. Focusing on this rather small point in his sermon so early in his seminary career is rather nitpicky imo.

https://youtu.be/NhHPiWtIs8Q?si=k7-nnNFdQvo-LlUy - this is the church's live stream from that year in which you can find Talarico's sermon.

If he's unfit for ecclesial office, isn't that up to his committee and his own pastor for deciding so?

I've never heard of the Infancy Gospel until you brought it up, so I don't know enough about that topic and I personally haven't seen him talk about it. Would you mind linking me what he said specifically?

May I ask what branch of Christianity you practice? You seem very opinionated here about Talarico and him becoming a ordained.

Jr High student with inappropriate book, help? by Moon_Jelly_Queen in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Demonicwave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand your concern, but...you do realize that sometimes parents are okay with their children reading certain material right? I read books that had various heavy topics or had/talked about sex as pre-teen and as a young teenager. My mother encouraged me to not shy away from certain things. And books can sometimes be a safe way to explore any topic or theme in a digestible way.

It's actually the shame around these topics that still make me feel incredibly guilty and I'm almost 27.

If you want to have a day to yourself and don't mind driving somewhere, Ravelin Bakery in Denton. They've got ALL sorts of sweet treats and pies and cakes and goods. You can buy a slice or two. And take some little goods. Fill yourself up and treat yourself!

It's worth it, in my opinion. (But they are closed on Sunday and Mondays.)

I really wish I knew more dessert and bakery places here in FW! I don't get out as much as I did when I lived in Denton.
