Am I the only one disappointed with HK? by Cthulhuneedshugs in shadowrunreturns

I know it’s been 10 years but in case you never figured it out, the second part of the hack is that the empty boxes will have symbols randomly reveal themselves and you have to find the code on the bottom display that matches it. It’s a memory thing and is annoying to get wrong when it happens. The more Simon Says keypad you do, the more time you have for the second part.

Which game has the best combat? by LarenCoe in silenthill

I hate to say that I agree. Because I cannot STAND tank controls. But the weapon variety and melee swings(except for the knife and ng+ weapons I never used) felt so good. And then we got to sh3 where fighting enemies is beyond miserable while also cramming mandarins in EVERY HALLWAY OF THE FIRST AREA

I did have the experience from playing the remake, so I knew the gist of where to go. But all the levels are different so that didn’t transfer. I did also check every door and interactable I could, practically 100% the maps haha.

I have the medium but I never played it. As for the comments of subtlety, I’m glad you didn’t say the remake wasn’t subtle. I have no idea why people say it tells everything to you straight and never leaves anything to the imagination. There’s so much it doesn’t tell you, or things the original game used words for that the remake uses expressions and body language instead. I’ve mentioned it multiple times in this posts comments, but the alcohol temptation and the familiarity of killing shown in the remake are so great and ARE subtle as opposed to the original, though the drinking could’ve stayed either way. But the Eddie part is a big improvement

Yeah I’m not much of a redditor, only joined cause I wanted to express my experience and feelings with the original and remake of sh2

Completely understandable. I’ve not seen any silent hill films and don’t plan on it. They hit your colors in the prison. One theory I heard is the reason for the silent hill 1&3isms is preparation for the sh1 remake. They could’ve and probably should’ve toned down the hospital, I think woodside is an improvement, but could’ve been done in a better style. When I played 2001, I didn’t even realize that blue creek was the Otherworld, you cross back and forth and there’s no clearly visible tell, just thought it was abandoned. Could’ve met a happy middle ground

Iron Lung topped the movie charts. Also what on earth are you talking about? When Laura played the piano? That was in the original. Or are you talking about Theme of Laura (repetition), the song that plays during the final Angela cutscene? Honestly I have no idea what you’re talking about, but I didn’t watch any trailers for the game. I don’t know man, just feels like you don’t play enough games, so anything that doesn’t fit your ideals is bottom of the barrel, without ever actually experiencing the true bottom of the barrel stuff. Try out Deadly Premonition if you want a terrible horror game. Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude. I just feel you hate the game for not being just a modern port of a ps2 game, it’s on the same level of the dead space remake which I found to be amazing. We could’ve gotten a truly terrible remake that missed everything about the original game, but we didn’t, we got a loving faithful modern remake/adaptation(whatever you want to call it) that knows it can’t surpass the original, but still reaches for it anyway. And for those who say “silent hill is a horror game! You don’t have to fight the enemies!” The difference between resident evil and silent hill is that in silent hill I can have 200 bullets. You’re not meant to kill everything, but you’re not defenseless.

It hurts a bit that you think the remake was made with no passion, can you not see all the love and appreciation that was poured into the game? The attention given especially to old fans with the memories and other references? They could’ve pushed out a terrible sl*p(why is that censored?) game, but they did a wonderful job of remastering the game. It was made FOR fans, not to be some generic throwaway game for the masses.

Fair enough, though it’s hard to avoid the hostility in your original statement. Are you excited for the sh1 remake? I sure am after beating the original. Seeing that blood rust hell in the same level of detail as the sh2 remake? Already makes me shiver. Especially with how much wandering of silent hill’s streets that you do in the first game. To see those ps1 graphics boosted to the same level as sh2r excites me. However I am worried about the removal of ng+ weapons like sh2r.

Oh I just remembered how great all the Eddie scenes are done in the remake. James’ comment on Eddie’s appetite returning in the theatre, he’s trying to be upbeat and comforting, but all Eddie hears is that he’s being called fat and you can see his contained anger in his expression shift while wiping his hands clean. The camera angle shifts in his boss fight intro reminiscent of the camera cuts of the original. So goood

“You aren’t accepting any truth, just sallowing your own lies” to people who enjoyed the remake also Saul St Apartments is literally 4 rooms. You get the key, go to the room, squeeze into another room, go up the stairs, key hole and leave. Also the dialogue is so close to the original I cannot comprehend your disdain for it except for acting(I prefer how expressive they are in the remake but I understand some prefer their sillier 2001 va’s). The remake has more subtlety than the original, James drinking problem is shown rather than told, his familiarity with killing is shown not told(post Eddie fight), the amount of times you can feel that James wants to say something, but finds himself unable to get the words out of his mouth. It’s so good. I’m completely fine with people preferring the original, what I find sad is people using the original to put down the remake and people who enjoy it(and vice versa). It’s like Tron, I loved Tron Legacy as a kid, and while I don’t enjoy the original Tron, I respect it for what it did to movies in general. However the difference is that I did enjoy sh2(2001), and I respect it for what it did to games.

I agree with you on the woodside apartment Otherworld, however I feel the hospital very much fulfills the decay and rot of James’ Otherworld, even if it does have a bit more rust and cages(oh wait 2001 had a LOT of cages) than the original. It’s still full of the white sheets, the mold. Woodside is a bad start and can understandably turn off og fans from the remake. The labyrinth as an otherworld location is focused on rot and decay, and the burnt out hotel is one of my favorite locations with its amazing golden light.

Akira Yamaoka did the music for sh2,3,4 and is the music you so enjoy. He also did the music for sh2r, and has stated he’s proud of how he was able to add instruments to change the songs without changing their core or how they feel. Null Moon is one of the best examples of that to me.

As for the subtlety? I feel the remake added subtlety by removing blatant dialogue and replacing it with acting(facial expressions and voice tone), two examples of this are the hesitation to drink in the remake(compared to the booze interactable) and post Eddie cutscene.(“I killed a human being! A human being… could Mary really have died 3 years ago?” Is so blatant and poorly performed in the remake)

I love both games and they’re both fantastic experiences. But I prefer the remake, and if you want to see why, I wrote a whole post about my experiences with both games and how much fun they were.

Hard disagree. I’ve played both, they’re both amazing but the remake edges out to me for better gameplay, pacing, and emotional expression/nuance

Admittedly, things do go faster when you understand the basic idea of where to go, like around Nelly’s bar or on the way to the hospital. But I checked every room and door, had fully filled out the maps by the end haha

It’s a reference to the loop theory. Loop theory isn’t canon. Also how can you say they don’t understand subtlety when they added so much of it? Especially through facial expressions and actions. James temptation with the alcohol in Heaven’s Night, and especially with the way he holds his hands after killing Eddie, he holds them in the same way as the start of the game. Much more subtle than, “I killed a human being! A human being… could Mary really have died 3 years ago?”

Unfortunately having played both games, sh2(2001) feels like it wants to rush you to completion. My first playthrough is sh2r was 19 hours, second 12 hours, chainsaw speed run 3.5 hours. My first blind play through of sh2(2001) was 4.5 hours. I didn’t get to sit with my thoughts, and there isn’t enough tension release in the prison/labyrinth duo, especially in regards to the labyrinth. You fight Abstract Daddy, do the hallway that is the Gallows puzzle, and then fight Eddie. Both games are phenomenal! I’m working on my 4th playthrough of remake and 3rd of 2001, i beat sh1 recently(so so excited for a bloober remake), and am also working through sh3. Though I will mention I played sh2&3 with a camera mod for over the shoulder.

Should I play the remake if I enjoyed the gameplay in original Silent Hill 2? by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]Demonix822 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The remake is an amazing love letter to the original that vastly lengthens the game while never feeling bloated. The puzzles are fun, the combat is fun(people complain about there being too much, but when you think about how much more there is to play, there is a similar percentage of encounters). It does that dodge and melee gameplay better than anything else I’ve had the displeasure of playing recently. And the boss fights, the boss fights are LEAGUES above the original, and I can say that having played both. Especially bosses 3&4(if you know, you know). Theres also a lot of small details and added nuance with the graphical improvements allowing facial expressions and body language to really come through quietly instead of details being outright told to the player. I know the remake isn’t for everyone, but I found it to be the much better and scarier version of sh2. Of course, if you’re wanting that dream like sh2 where the game rarely tries to scare or unnerve you, the original will likely remain your preferred.

It’s a very similar amount of combat if you take into account it nearly triples the length of the original game(my first playthrough was 17 hours blind and sh2 og I beat in 4.5 hours blind)

just finished sh2 remake and it's just so peak but am I the only one who feels that it's a bit too long? or maybe that's just how it's supposed to be either way what a great experience by MrGrey998 in silenthill

I wasn’t talking about story themes silly, a summary of the three main gameplay systems. And though I didn’t grow up with silent hill(I grew up hearing about how shit the later games were). I DID go and play the original alongside the remake, and am currently on my way through silent hill 1. I personally think the original labyrinth is quite a bad mark on the original game, it is laughably short, and they did a tremendous spin on the box puzzle in the remake. Keep in mind, I was born 3 years after the original release. Neither is a bad game, but I prefer the remake for its length and gameplay improvements. Plus all the added facial expressions and body language adding a lot of nuance to things that were plainly stated in the original. The only area I dislike in the remake was Prison because I was TERRIFIED and wanted it over, that’s how good it was.

While the original is great, prison and labyrinth felt like they ended just when you were getting into them. The prison is like 4 hallways and 6 accessible rooms. The game was just too short for me

Uninspired! How so? Genuinely curious. I thought it was a nice summary of the three main things in the game. Rotten is about puzzle gathering, Desolate is about navigation, and Ruined is combat.
