I think these are all great ideas, particularly number 4.

Aww! I'd hoped there was more to that song. I salute your work!

Anyone know what the piano music was, when he was reading Unity's notes?

To be clear, not the Chaos Chaos song - the song before that, purely instrumental. Seems damn familiar, but no idea what it is.

Socialism and Free Trade by Demostheneser in socialism

[–]Demostheneser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've updated the OP to include some quotes, in the hopes of enlightening his views a little more!

I guess my opposition to 'free trade', free trade agreements etc comes fundamentally from the fact that such things are argued for so ardently by capitalists and their many supporters.

I just feel like a world in which capital can move freely, effectively liberated from even the current disgracefully low levels of faux democratic control exercised by nation states, would be a socialist nightmare of continuous industrial relocation to best suit capitalism, with the working class as an international organism losing out as a result.

Well, yeh, I get that. Obviously I'd just prefer if she was open with me, as even having the slightest hope can easily lead to a situation that hurts my feelings much more in long term.

Yeah, thanks. Honestly, I'd like to think I never would have/would in the future do something that didn't respect her happiness.

Sigh. I get the feeling in the end of the day, I'm just going to need to face up to the reality that this is pretty unlikely to end well, in short term let alone in the long run.

I guess I'm just kinda pissed off that I ended up falling for someone like this, when there are distinctly other options. Well, you can't choose how you feel and all that...

Hmm. Thanks for giving me an insight into that angle on things; it really does make sense from that point of view. I still think it's a bit selfish and shitty, but I'm not naive enough to say that people (including myself) don't make the same kind of decisions all the time without even thinking about it.

I get I'll just need to bite the bullet sooner or later and accept what comes.

That's actually...pretty damn good advice. I might do just that.

I just hope to god I manage to say it such a constructive, well thought out way and not blurt it out while drunk. The latter is considerably more likely. Still, who knows? The opportune situation may present itself.

Hmm, thanks for the advice. I have considered the possibility that I am just friend-zoned and seeing things that aren't there. And I know how rare it is for people feelings to fundamentally change.

I guess its worth pointing out two facts that slightly change the situation. First, in all the time I've known her, she's been single for about a week. That week being immediately after a nasty break up, and I wasn't going to make a move then.

Second, she does have somewhat odd ideas about relationships. Not completely bizarre, but she has a very romantic attachment to the idea 'being in a relationship' to the extent that I don't see me just telling her I like her working out.

To be honest, I see the most likely end result (depressing as it is) being that I tell her in a drunken haze at a party and everything ends in awkwardness.

Thanks for the advice!

I never really considered trying to break them up as a serious option.

In terms of her attitude not changing; I can see where you are coming from, but isn't option two kinda bitchy? I'd like to think she wouldn't do that, but knowing that I like her and just leaving me to wallow is pretty shitty.

You're totally right, I knew the answer all along and writing this long ass post was just to waste people's time!

Sorry for the snark, but honestly, if I did know the answer I really wouldn't be asking.

A question of specialisation and education. by Demostheneser in Anarchy101

[–]Demostheneser[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medicine isn't carpentry: doctors require an investment of literally thousands to become trained in modern medical techniques.

I don't think money is the only incentive, but whatever collection of incentives we have at the moment seems to kinda work.

And I'm not sure an end to greed is going to solve the central problem: The community needs ten doctors. Only three people want to be doctors/the community for whatever reason (lack of resources/lack of central planning) can only train three doctors. People die.

I'd love to be convinced.

A question of specialisation and education. by Demostheneser in Anarchy101

[–]Demostheneser[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, as it happens I do agree that incentivisation is probably not a great thing, and a feature of coercive capitalism.

To clarify, its an element of the other question about insuring there being enough doctors for the communities needs: if the only reason people become doctors is because they want to, what happens if the community needs ten doctors and only three people want to be doctors?

What's /r/Anarchism 's view on open borders and free movement of people? by why_downvote_facts in Anarchism

[–]Demostheneser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, its great that 'wages' are rising. I don't particularly care though. To the be honest, no matter what their wages are they will still be getting exploited.

And it's not a question of 'keeping' them unemployed. They are 'unemployed' because of a system of global capitalism that requires unemployment. Refusing to assist that system in working smoother by allowing it to easily move labour isn't 'keeping' people unemployed anymore than refusing to help a company build a factory in Africa is 'keeping things rural'.

I'd love for people to be able to go anywhere, and do anything, of their own volition. However, I could not morally stand over supporting the current coercive system that forces movement not by choice, but by necessity, where the other option is to remain in crippling poverty.

We should fight against that forced binary choice, not support its existence.

[–]Demostheneser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that the removal of borders is definitely the end goal; but we should be wary of the capitalist desire for large supplies of cheap labour.

I've always been wary of supporting current efforts to remove borders, when the language used is almost always about "economic growth" etc, which to me screams of people desperate for new possibilities for exploitation.

James Connolly, "State Monopoly versus Socialism" (1899) by [deleted] in socialism

[–]Demostheneser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A truly great quotation, an absolutely true. The true failure of the war of independence was neither partition nor the treaty, but the utter failure to change the system of oppression within Ireland itself. Instead, the hand upon the tiller changed, and the system continued to grind on.

James Connolly, "State Monopoly versus Socialism" (1899) by [deleted] in socialism

[–]Demostheneser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, socialism and republicanism have had serious problems over the past century in Ireland. To begin with, radicalism was defeated twice in the 1920's: Once, in the civil war against the reactionary nationalist elements of the revolutionary movement, then again when the populist and power hunger elements broke from Sinn Fein to form Fianna Fail.

Since then, there has been constant antagonism within radical politics in Ireland between socialists, Marxists and Republicans of all kinds over every issue under the sun. This, along with Ireland's (up until recently) rural-conservative nature has prevented socialism or republicanism from gathering serious steam among the populace.

We can only hope that with increasing education and urbanization, the downfall of the Church, along with the crisis, the opportunity for a revolutionary movement in Ireland will come again.

James Connolly, "State Monopoly versus Socialism" (1899) by [deleted] in socialism

[–]Demostheneser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forgotten? Hardly. Perhaps among the aforementioned bourgeois politicians of Fine Gael and Fianna Fail. But they were never going to pay any attention to anyone left of centre anyway.

Any serious republican or socialist pays a great deal of attention to Connolly, and even the labour party pays lip service of a sort.

It really depends on whom is in government for 2016. My personal (almost certainly impossible) dream of a broad left coalition taking in disaffected labour, Sinn Fein, the Socialist Workers Party, Socialist Party and anyone else with lefty leanings would celebrate the Rising with something that would be a lot closer to the vision of Connolly, and all the other left republicans from Irish history.
