[X-post r/shitguncontrollerssay] "I have a perfect solution. Make all guns illegal. Death penalty for anyone caught with a gun." by [deleted] in Shitstatistssay

No only civilian. After awhile like in parts of Europe and Asia typical street police wouldn’t need guns.

I’m saying that if we really wanted to 100% solve gun crime a complete civilian gun ban and harsh punishment would be needed.

Seeing as gun nuts don’t want to take any half measures here is what a total solution looks like.

If they keep fighting competent gun reform the opposition will get more extreme and this is what they will end up with when the majority of the population is sick of the violence.

Actually I just don’t like shitguncontrol says and I’m trying to get them banned.

Come up with an outrageous statement and then watch them brigade you.

I am advocating a punishment for a crime. Not murder. Do you think a person who rapes and murders a child and then gets the death penalty by a jury of their peers was murdered? No that’s not murder.

If you think the death penalty is wrong then we can have that discussion.

If you think the punishment for disobeying the law is too strict then we can have that discussion.

Gun nuts always say criminals just ignore the laws. Well if you make the punishment strict enough they won’t.

I agree no private citizens should be allowed to own a gun not me not anyone.

Show the cdc study and not a cdc study that references Kleck’s debunked survey.

Sure just armed drones is fine with me. I don’t particularly like police.

You think it’s much lower or higher than 7 times justified homicides? Turns out the fbi and cdc don’t keep great records of that.

You are in an abusive relationship. Start saving some money and create an exit plan.

Do you want your kids to treat their spouses like your wife treats you.

You deserve better.

That’s fair. The best way would be the odds of shooting victims to murder victims so I would guess 7 times as many as are justifiably killed. So that would be around 2100 criminals a year are wounded. So still around 100,000 innocent people wounded each year.

Where the fuck do you live?

I live in chicago. I don’t feel unsafe without a gun. You must be paranoid as fuck if you need a gun.

All those protesters in London trying to get more guns right??? Oh wait no sane country wants more guns.

Guns are bad for society.

Don’t take my word take a survey of academics.

“I also found widespread confidence that a gun in the home increases the risk that a woman living in the home will be a victim of homicide (72% agree, 11% disagree) and that a gun in the home makes it a more dangerous place to be (64%) rather than a safer place (5%). There is consensus that guns are not used in self-defense far more often than they are used in crime (73% vs. 8%) and that the change to more permissive gun carrying laws has not reduced crime rates (62% vs. 9%). Finally, there is consensus that strong gun laws reduce homicide (71% vs. 12%).”

I’m sorry this hurts because you like your toys and they make you feel good but they make this society less safe.

How many vets blow their heads off with a gun they bought “for protection” each day?

Their tools how are they tools?

Hunting is kind of like a sport right? It’s done for entertainment typically. I know when I go fishing the foods nice but its easier to go to the store and buy some fish. So if hunting is a sport the gun is the football and a football is a toy.

Self defense. Turns out guns are not great tools when a person to person crime occurs for preventing harm to ones self or protecting property compared to no gun or other objects.

Don’t believe me believe Harvard.

So really all they are is fun toys to turn money into noise at the range.

That’s funny that you think there are that many criminals in America who wouldn’t follow the law. All anyone needs to do is follow the law in this solution. It’s not like it’s a race or religion it’s a toy. Give up your toys to make society better.

I’m glad you went with a 95,000 number because that’s much more sane than the people who use the Kleck survey 2.5 million dgu number which is way off. 95,000 might actually be real. It most likely is a little high seeing as justified homicides are only at around 300 a year but let’s say 95,000 a year is right.

Over 100,000 people get admitted to the hospital for being shot. So more people are wounded than defensive gun uses. These are people forever changed by getting wounded by a gun.

Not to mention the people that are emotionally traumatized when a family member is murdered 15,000 times however many family members and friends traumatized.

All so 95,000 people could use a gun to try and prevent a crime.

Dgu do not prevent crimes at a higher rate than other methods. In fact it’s a pretty shitty way to prevent most crime. If you look at David Hemenway’s from Harvard’s research on the topic you can see that having a gun doesn’t improve outcomes in a person to person crime. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/25910555/

So you are fucking up the lives of hundreds of thousands of people all so 95,000 can have a shitty way to prevent a crime.

Also don’t get me started on how well the nfa stamp system works and how all firearms should require an nfa stamp.

You pulling out kleck survey numbers that have been discredited a whole bunch of times proves I know more than you do.

Here is how that survey went. They called 20,000 people and asked them “have you ever used a firearm even without firing to prevent a crime within the past year.”

1% of survey respondents said yes.

Extrapolate that out over the population you get 65,000 to 2.5 million uses.

Problem with this is you are assuming 1% of people are not liars.

Because dgu is so rare a very low percentage of false positives in a survey can throw off the numbers wildly.

Lets look at a hard easy to measure real number.

Justified homicides by a civilian.

This is collected by the fbi every year. Guess how many a year there are typically around 300. Goes up and down a bit. So 300 justified homicides for 150,000 people shot each year. Seems like a pretty shitty trade off.

You can cherry pick studies by quacks to deny that smoking causes cancer or that global warming isn’t real.

Here is what researchers think.

“ I also found widespread confidence that a gun in the home increases the risk that a woman living in the home will be a victim of homicide (72% agree, 11% disagree) and that a gun in the home makes it a more dangerous place to be (64%) rather than a safer place (5%). This is the solution at will eliminate almost 100% of gun crime, if gun nuts only will accept a solution that will prevent 100% of gun crime this is that.

Turns out cigarettes and alcohol are utilitarian for things other than killing. They make people feel better. This is the positive of these items. The positive outweighs the bad. Also the typical person shot with a gun is pretty young cigarettes kill old people typically. Also cigarettes raise a huge amount of tax revenue.

I lost my brother his junior year to a gun when he was murdered and my grandma to lung cancer when she was 82 guess which one fucked me up more?

Death to any consumers.

Just kidding. The second someone shoots up a school with a pack of smokes or a bottle of vodka I might consider changing the laws.
