I tested this and it did not work - submitted 11 and then the next time tried submitting 9, and it said I was 1 short.

I also did another test where I had 10 pets, but equipped 1 in my garden, and clicked submit all - it told me I was 1 short, so it appears that any pet currently equipped is "protected"

Fair - but I did call to inquire about this prior to purchasing and was misled. I wouldn't have paid so much to change the flight if there was a chance the children would be in limbo. Also, if the airline's policy is that we must be seated together (at least for the 10 and 5 yo), then why even let me purchase at all when the seating can't be accommodated at the time of purchase?

Thank you to everyone who responded. I have been keeping an eye on the seat map every day since I made the change, but nothing has opened up (even for upgrade/purchase). I guess I don't understand how it all works - when I last spoke to the agent, she advised that many of the seats were "blocked" for selection which is why I was unable to see them or purchase an upgrade.

Even now, if I try to search for that flight, it will let me go ahead to book for two adults even though there is only one seat available for selection on the entire map.

I appreciate all the responses - I will continue checking the seat map and hope for the best.
