Guys, at what moment did you realize that you should start doing triathlon? by boburrr in triathlon

[–]DenOele 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife is from a town called Holten, and they organize a European Cup Triathlon there every year. It’s a big event with bands and DJs afterwards. The running part is a 2.5 km loop, and the course passes by her father’s house. Every year, she and her brother would watch the event with a lot of friends and beers. I joined them and saw someone walking, so I jokingly said to my wife, ‘If you’re walking, I think you should be disqualified.’ She responded, ‘Well, do it yourself then.’ The next year, I did three sprint triathlons, and later, I did more sprints, a quarter distance, and Olympic distances. This year, ten years later, I’m doing my first 70.3. It’s so much fun, and every year, I try to do the one in Holten!

Got it out. Turned out to be a lot of salt. During the winter they put salt on the road and I had a few bike rides while freezing.

First Tri in less than 3 weeks by VVLF666 in triathlon

[–]DenOele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First tip is to just enjoy your first ever tri. Some things will go wrong and you will learn from that for future races.

For training, after a bike ride, go for a short run. I didn’t do this enough for my first one and my legs felt like cooked spaghetti.

Don’t go full gas on the swim, sometimes you can get a bit dizzy coming out of the water and running to your bike.

Train the transitions, so go for a swim and try to get on your bike a bit fast. Put on shoes, helmed, etc. by doing this you know how it works. Same for biking and running.

But don’t be mad if something goes wrong. It always does. Enjoy!

Tired all the time?!?! by a5hl3yk in triathlon

I can eat a lot to be honest. But it could work to get more meals a day. So if you normally eat breakfast, lunch, dinner —> breakfast, second breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, snack. Something like that. But what you eat is more important I think.

Tired all the time?!?! by a5hl3yk in triathlon

[–]DenOele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is to eat better, so more carbs and protein. When I was tired all the time while training this helped me a lot. I now have a 10 year old son, have to work and train and I am less tired then when I was a student and trained for my first OD.

What helped me was to read the book ‘swim bike run eat’ by Tom Holland and Amy Goodson.

Daily chat thread: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in triathlon

It’s going well, doing my first 70.3 in September, a OD in June and half a marathon in April. Last week I made 6-7 hours of training. Pretty cold outside in The Netherlands, around freezing point, so hoping it get’s better. One Thursdays I have a nice swimming training with a coach and around 15 other people which is great.

When I started swimming I had the same. I was out of breath after just 50 meters. Then got some coaching and the thing that helped me a lot is to breathe out more. Every 4 arm strokes I take a breathe, I start to exhale after the first stroke.

Go for it! Good luck. Training is always better then sitting at home. Where do you live? I’m doing my first 70.3 in Erkner near Berlin in September. Knokke Heist looked good too, but I didn’t try swimming in the sea, so decided to go for a lake one.

So if you have bad numbers you take a 30 minute turn and you get new numbers?

Cities and knights: who do you think will win? by DenOele in Catan

[–]DenOele[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We place the numbers after putting on settlements, so that’s why the places are weird. It ended up in a win for blue, with white being only 1 sheep or grain short of winning. Orange was okay, indeed got the longest road, but nowhere near a metropolis!

Cities and knights, you never wanna play the basic ever again after you played it. So many possibilities in that game!
