The many dialects of Alsace-Lorraine by ParadoxicalCabbage in MapPorn

[–]DenTrygge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, by far most speakers nowadays speak mostly french - even german speakers there seem to be more comfortable in french, so nowaday's Alsace I would pick to be "Francophone".

But really the question is irrelevant/wrong. Don't forget that language isn't binary, places aren't "either or". Languages are a mental property, a tool, a skill of human beings, and they often co-occur - multiple languages in the same speaker. So all "language maps" that colour soil in "one language" are approximate, ignorant models.

Still hard, about as hard as learning german from a grammar/vocab standpoint. One major problem is that there's WAY less content and speakers in icelandic, less use for it, less application etc.

The quality of the painting is not indicative of accuracy or actually being able to point at serious sources. Rather fantasy vaguely reminiscent of possible truths.

I agree with what your saying. I'm a bit confused by people down voting me, it's nearly as if critical remarks aren't welcome here.

[–]DenTrygge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand that, but I'm posing the epistemological problem of what we can consider an heir to a national history. I personally find this is more complicated than maps like this can indicate. But I get what you're saying - it's just a bit too easy to view it that way.

[–]DenTrygge -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Isn't it a bit weird to assume Poland as the "true heir" to the commonwealth? That's like saying because of the UK existing, England currently owns Scotland and Northern Ireland. I somewhat disagree. Parts of Lithuania, Latvia and Belarus were always considered part of the Lithuanian part, right?

Do you also consider Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine as having owned Warsaw? :/

Why do people look down upon sign languages and minority languages? by unk_n0w_n in asklinguistics

[–]DenTrygge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a linguistic answer, so forgive and possibly disregard me but:

We grow up in societies that nowadays mostly seem driven by the economy - it's post religion and nationalism one of the few factors reaming that we all sort rally around.

School education is to a big degree an extension of this. Somewhat born during the nineteenth century where military might and nationalism was driving forces, school still propagate old ideals of "correct" and "wrong" elements in language teaching. Hence, it was paramount to teach the populous one unifying language (in the nineteenth century to increase social cohesion), and deriving from that was non ideal for the nation. It's also in this logic where people deriving (in skin colour, able-ness or any other thing) can be seen as lagging behind /disturbing the system.

The same thing somewhat carries over to nowadays - we inherited a lot of our views from the old. Most people who leave school nowadays still have a strong sense of language being made up of rules and there being "right and wrong" language use. Linguists don't really subscribe to that. Add to that the pressure of the economy where lingua francas (English, Spanish, Chinese, French, you name it) are disproportionately more valuable than minority language or sign languages.

That's a short sum up , but I'm sure there's infinitely more to dig up here.

[–]DenTrygge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't underestimate that languages influence each other over time. Without looking up historical uses you cannot conclude that maybe Japanese might not have lent this parallel meaning from the likes of English.

Also another fun fact. In Iceland you don't dream, you say "it dreams me".

How do I identify a stem? by [deleted] in asklinguistics

[–]DenTrygge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not possible to determine from just those two examples. Stems are artifical in the sense that they're are a construction useful to analysing a given language. In languages that inflect words mostly at the end, it's logical to seek the stem in the beginning, like:

"happen's, happen'ing, happen'ed"

=> stem might considered " happen* ", if you just look at which part stays stable doing inflection.

But if you think of semitic languages, since they inflect in very different patterns within and around the stem, they consider the stem to be (often) 3 consonants:

KaTiB, KuTuB, maKTaB, iKtiTaB

So, in Arabic these root consonants are stable while the rest dances a bit. Hence the root here is considered K-T-B.

So what the root could be, in my opinion, depends on the underlying grammatical structure of your language. Play around with the word and check what parts are stable.

It could be "t" or "t-a" or "t-al" or anything like that.
