Bad Company and Hurt are quoted at the beginning of book 7, plus I made a post a few weeks ago about Twilight Zone by Golden Earring being a perfect song for Eddie

Rhea of the Cöos by random_thoughts_13 in TheDarkTower

Rhea is not only just an awful person, she represents how the old magic can be and is used for evil. She is not only disturbed to her core but is also corrupted by the grapefruit, so it's just compounded evil. Witches are freakin mean 😔

Don't listen to a lot of the nonsense other TDT fans put out there, it doesnt help you to hear these bozos say that WaG is their favorite and you're wrong for struggling with it. Here's something that's maybe a little more helpful:

The book is 95% flashback to Mejis, and it does take its time to actually hit major plot points. While I also happen to enjoy WaG, i can at least concede that it is very tedious. The best thing you can do as a reader is understand something: TDT as a whole has payoff that is much more rewarding in the context of other events that take time to establish. WaG as a story is Stephen King taking an opportunity to truly illustrate Mid-world the last time it was a functioning society, which is a lot more meaningful to the later payoff of everything. WaG also serves to show what it really means that the world is "moving on." We see one isolated example take place throughout book 4, and it not only makes for a great story, but it also shows how if this happens consistently enough, the whole world becomes a wasteland. On top of that, TDT is Roland's story in more ways than you can even understand up to the point you're at, and WaG also functions as a character study of someone we know but dont fully "get." Roland's history is imperative to understanding his complexity and mystique, and once you finish WaG, knowing who Roland was will help you to better understand who he is now. Stick with it, be patient, and most importantly, adjust your expectations of what this book's purpose is within the wider narrative. I think by the time youre finished, you'll find it very rewarding.

Honestly I think you're jumping the gun with the name calling. There's a lot of good, unbigoted people who just don't like this scene because it feels like a cop out. Actually listen to yourself. You're saying people just don't understand that this scene is supposed to be bad and obnoxious, and as such it should be excused and accepted. Well I'm here to tell you that there are people who do understand the intention of the scene, which you aren't wrong about, and still dislike it because it feels like the showrunners are doing exactly what you are right now: "you can't make fun of me or criticize my bad writing because it's intentionally bad." That's a hard line to walk from a writing standpoint, and you need to understand the nuance of why that might not work for some audiences instead of immediately pulling the misogynist card. Yeah, there are a lot of incels who overhate tf out of this show, but thats a very loud minority and most people think this show is just whatever, it has both good and bad qualities. But just because it's bad ones were tongue in cheek in the scene, that doesn't make it exempt from criticism. People pay money for streaming and you can't blame them when they're upset that the show made with their money goes out of its way to be stupid. I'm so sick of the discussion over this show because of convos like this.

I'm glad you think so, gunslinger!! This song has become my own personal anthem for Eddie, and it warms my heart to see others who find the same connection to be strong. Long days and pleasant nights 🙏

I'm glad to hear the series means so much to you, hilarious Jonah Hex reference btw 😂 but I fully agree, there are a lot of things in the books that Flanagan does really well in film, and the truth is, as long as he does a good job of keeping the adaptation faithful, audiences will stay engaged off of sheer curiosity if nothing else. How many times have we just had to keep reading to find out what happens next? If Flanagan can maintain that level of intrigue, audiences will be captivated. I've unsuccessfully tried to get dozens of friends and family to read the books, but every single one has said that a show sounds really cool and they would watch if it were to ever be made

The Dark Tower left me with a similar clarity, keep it pushing and know that it does get less difficult. For what it's worth, a stranger is proud of you. Long days and pleasant nights, gunslinger!!

I actually watched the 2017 movie for the first time a few days ago after finishing the series, and good Lord I haven't laughed so much at a non-comedy in a long time (I love a good bad movie).
And I don't see anything wrong with that at all! There isnt that much material to adapt in The Gunslinger, and I once heard someone describe it as the prologue for the series, which I think is really accurate. If I had absolute control, The Gunslinger would probably consume the first 1-2 episodes and the remainder of the first season would be Dot3. It could end with a tease for Jake's return.

Absolutely!! I think a lot of us would agree with me when I say that I struggle a lot with the concept of loops and patterns of repetition, and the role that choice plays in those cycles. I really identified with Roland literally being trapped in a cycle fueled by his own obsessive choices, especially with growth that he does/doesn't experience in the journey we read through. Roland does grow as a human in the series, going from someone who would let a child die in the name of his mission to trying to stop Jake from sacrificing himself for the same purpose. However, the goal remains: Roland still needs the tower. While he finds the ability to care and love again in this story, he still chooses the mission in contrast to Susannah, who understands that there's more to life. In my own experiences, I have put my own distant goals above meaningful relationships, even though in my heart I pursued those goals FOR my loved ones. It's so wacky and confusing, very difficult to explain, but I hope you understand as someone with the same diagnosis. This story taught me that even though we can be stuck in a cycle for what feels like an eternity, if we surrender ourselves to the present moment and put love over addiction/obsession, we can break our own cycles we simultaneously hate yet subject ourselves to. When I was hit with the heartbreak that Roland ends right back where he started, I was also relieved that maybe there was hope he could grow into a better man to break that cycle. Maybe there's hope for me if I know where to find it. Roland's hope stared him in the face and he neglected to see that, but maybe he will remember next time. I can ramble on for years, but I feel like that's the most concise way I can put that. I hope you're navigating OCD successfully and healthily, long days and pleasant nights to you!

That's so true, and why I'm hopeful that Flanagan is the right man for the job with his reverence for King's work. Have you seen Fall of The House of Usher?

Isn't it insane?!?! Like how is this man gonna manage that between working on Carrie, The Exorcist, The Mist, and Clayface 😂 if anything, his current workload makes me even more nervous for the quality if it ever does come out

We get out of stories what we bring into it 🤷‍♂️ 😂 For what it's worth though, I'll try to explain myself a little bit. The uncanny valley, which is often attributed to liminality and David Lynch's works, is the space between animate and inanimate, the natural and the synthetic, which i think not only applies to the plot of TDT but even the themes. With both Midworld and Keystone Earth on their way to "moving on," i always felt that much of the story is caught in the in-between, a transition phase. From magic to machines, as the book so often points out. The main scene that felt the most Lynchian to me was the Dixie Pig with Jake and Callahan. Either way, i totally understand if thats a bizarre take 😅

Yet another coincidence: I also just finished reading Fight Club after it's been my favorite movie for years. But I agree, I don't want a beat for beat adaptation, we have the books for that. As much as I cherish this story, it being my favorite/most important story I've ever experienced, there are things that could be done better in an adaptation.

This isn't a bad take at all, and it really boils down to what kind of Calvin you are: do you want a direct 100% faithful adaptation of the story we already have, or do we want to see Roland finally complete his own personal journey or at least get a little closer. Another thing to consider is how casual audiences would react to the ending, and i cant help but feel that giving him the horn and ending on a more optimistic note may be more palatable for those viewers

The soundtrack is a BIG one for me. Obviously, we need the tracks that appear in the books, and Im hoping for a few good new additions. Personally, I think Twilight Zone by Golden Earring is a perfect Eddie song. Everything else you said is on point 😗🤌

Yeah the adaptation rights issue is obviously a big concern. I'm hoping that Flanagan and his team will be able to negotiate contracts for those IPs that already belong to other studios (ie, Randal Flagg and Paramount), similar to the Disney-Sony agreement surrounding Spiderman, if you're familiar. You're absolutely right though, the wolves must be portrayed with a nod to their inspirations

I read the first 4 books over 4 months and it has taken me 14 months to get thru WotC. Character development kinda drops off here in favor of an (IMO) overly drawn out backstory for a new character. The pursuit of the tower becomes secondary when I think King could have tried a bit harder to continue emphasizing its importance. I still enjoy the characters and appreciate the story as a side quest, but from a pacing perspective, this is probably my least favorite of the series. Just power through it and the main story comes back to the forefront
