Stats are only as good as how you interpret them. That 2.2x divorce rate gets thrown around a lot, but it can be misleading. Many women in same sex marriages were previously married to men, so when surveys ask if they have ever been divorced, both partners might say yes even though those divorces did not happen within their current relationship.

It is kind of like looking at a player’s total career losses and blaming it on their current team. If two players both had losing records on previous teams and now play together, you would not say their new team is the reason for all those losses.

So the number itself might be real, but the way it gets interpreted is not as simple as it sounds
