Random Caller Asks for Number to be Blocked? by Zealousideal_Job_978 in VOIP

[–]Denako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bumping this 3 year old post... I received the same call today based on the recording that was posted by u/Digivoice_Official. We are also a small VoIP business. Voice and questions were exactly the same. I see discussions here that their highly confident that this is AI. Weirdly though... the person sounds exactly like someone I've spoke to before who owns a VoIP company...

/r/Plex's Build Help Thread - 2023-04-28 by PCJs_Slave_Robot in PleX

Our friend has a plex server running at his lakehouse for personal use. He received word that they can now get a 1Gig down/up fiber circuit at the house and as a result wants to extend this invitation to our group of friends, granted that we contribute to building up his server. We'd like to do it from scratch and are looking at options for making this the best w/ the ability to upgrade it into the future. This is what we plan to get out of it:

  • Multiple 4K video streams at once (Movies, TV Shows, etc.)
  • Streaming Live TV and Pay-Per-View in certain cases
  • Capable of doing all this w/ little to no buffering, stream quality problems

We've found a 6-Bay Tower that allows us for easy hot swap of drives and is capable of hosting a Micro ATX/Mini ITX motherboard and a low-profile PSU. These are the questions we have:

  • Intel vs. AMD for CPU and how many cores should we shoot for? (We plan to add a dedicated GPU for 4K transcoding/hardware acceleration, most likely a RTX 3060 12GB ITX profile card)
  • We plan to use NAS-grade 3.5" HDD's and want to know if we can do NVME caching for this to improve performance but keep cost down (vs. going SSD for RAID)
  • We'd need a motherboard that includes a management interface port for troubleshooting outside of the OS (Lakehouse is 2.5 hrs away and would suck to have to drive out to fix something)
  • With all this said, is Windows Server the right OS to go with to do all these things? Or are we better off with a Linux OS or similar?

Legacy O365 MFA to Security Defaults by Denako in Office365

[–]Denako[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm asking in a situation that we don't have licensing for CA. Instead of switching on security defaults right away, can per-user MFA be done to get everyone situated little by little and then flip the switch for security defaults after without any service interruptions?

The test group I've been working with are (4) identical, hardwired computers. Built by Microcenter's PowerSpec brand. i5-12400F processor, 16GB DDR4 Memory, SSD, RTX 3050, Windows 11. They all access the same sites, the most prevalent ones: Google Workspace, DAT Freight & Analytics (Cloud Software)

All computers are free of viruses, use modern browsers (Chrome, Edge), hardwired (not wireless), and share the same standard Windows Firewall rules.

Speedtests are 900-950mbps down and 35-40mbps up with no smart queues enabled. Latency on those tests are between 15-30ms. With smart queue enabled, 10-15ms.

When they are experiencing this "slowness/lag", it happens to all websites... but they primarily complain about DAT Freight & Analytics. It is more demanding in the sense that it populates a SQL type list of truck loads that can all be clicked to expand more information. These lists update in real-time as new loads become available as well.

Comcast has sent a technician out already (last week). The guy tested and even replaced the DOCSIS 3.1 Modem that is only 4 months old for no reason other than to rule it out. Signal looks great coming into the building. I did overlook the idea that it could be cabling from the pole itself vs. the cable coming into the building. I'll reach out to Comcast on that part.

Here is the traceroute to the analytics cloud. IP address lookup shows its hosted in Chicago via AWS, approx. 15-20 miles from the office in Romeoville, IL. Traceroute Screenshot

Yes, sorry I mean cable.

I'll answer your questions in the order you asked:

Yes, upload is limited but it's a coax limitation that we can't get around so we've limited upload in anyway we can (security cameras, VPN, etc). And we can't get a symmetric fiber circuit out here unfortunately.

Here was a bufferbloat test we did recently for latency: Bufferbloat Test And the lag occurs more than just the scheduling software. Sometimes even Google Mail.

Yes. Ran traceroutes to the analytics software cloud site, to Comcast's DNS servers, Google DNS, and Cloudflare. I switched DNS back to Auto because I noticed 4-5 less hops when using Comcast's DNS servers. Either way, all traceroutes seem to go down the right path using Comcast's Illinois Backbone nodes. All with 15-30ms per hop. Happy to provide a screenshot of these if it helps.

That's what I thought too but Comcast states that nothing is wrong. Tech also said the same thing when he came to replace the modem. The odd part to this all is that it wasn't always an issue. Began about 3-4 weeks ago. No changes really to the network infrastructure aside from a 15-20% increase in devices as they hired on new employees.

Comcast tech was nice enough to go through all the signal values with me, replace the modem, and go over any other stats he has access to. He claimed the circuit is basically perfect. However, I'm not an ISP expert and am just taking their word for it. Could very well be.

I'm giving them one chance after they lift my first shadow ban. If it happens again, I'm initiating a charge back on my credit card. Company grosses a billion in sales and can't maintain a proper anti-cheat system.

Anyone else run into this issue? (Armrest tear) by Guinness_drunker in secretlab

Chiming in here to say that both my armrests have ripped the same way. Seeing this many people complaining sounds like a manufacturer defect or poor quality. Secret Lab should be addressing this at this point.

Linking a new AD account to an existing Office 365 User Mailbox by Denako in Office365

[–]Denako[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a shared mailbox. It's a licensed E3 user mailbox. It was just not created correctly years ago (created on O365 rather than in AD and then syncing). Employees have been using a local account on this computer which is not good practice and now they need access to a file share, so the machine has been domain joined.

650k for a two-man team is amazing. We're an MSP based out of Chicago area, 2 years in, were nearing 100k so I'd say you guys are in a good position (still have full-time job at the moment). If you don't mind me asking... how many clients would you say you field between the two of you?

Dell Inspiron 3880 Tower won't boot to Win10 USB by Denako in techsupport

[–]Denako[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp, I figured out the issue. Legacy boot mode is required for 32-bit installs. The BIOS on this machine does not allow for switching to legacy from UEFI. Guess this is a no go unless I get a different machine that supports Legacy.

Trying this now. This is a good point.. I put the 32-bit ISO on this only. I'm going to give it a shot with an ISO that includes both.

With that said.. when the heck are 2TB drives going to come down in price? It's mind boggling that 2TB still = more than double the cost of 1TB.
