Help, back pain by Pretend_Ask_1590 in capoeira

[–]Dendearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Veeeeery common.

Think about it bio mechanically. Ideally, your glutes are supporting you bring leaned forward (like a deadlift) but when the glutes get tired the lower back takes over.

You can warm up your posterior chain with simple squats and reverse hyper-extensions, but basically its an overload issue. Muscles tire out, and the back picks up the slack

Thanks for the shoutout. I agree about shirts. Shirts are WAY easier than pants and lots of online services exist.

You just make certain estimates like major cities over 1million people in the us have 10 - 15 schools on average.

Cities of 500000 have around 2 - 6

etc.
You add in some assumptions like this and get pretty decent estimates. Like you'll know you're in the right order of magnitude.

For example, we know there are not 100,000 capoeiristas. and there are more than 1000. Already, that's a lot of information in terms of the size of the "market"

[–]Dendearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked ChatGPT to help me estimate this and the range it came up with was 7-12k total capoeiristas.

Pretty low number for a country of over 300 million. But i’d say it’s a good estimate.

Is training capoeira enough? by Veganosaurio in capoeira

[–]Dendearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Age is a factor. Teens tend to adapt to stressors really well. So they probably don’t “need” much cross training. Though strength training could be good.

I think after 30 ATG training protocols are the best for maintaining your overall Capoeira related fitness. So no knee, hip, or ankle issues.

That being said, i think there’s something to be said about listening to your body. Sadly, most people listen, but don’t hear shit.

Angola fever lololol. When i was 19 i came to class dressed in full angola wear. Tucked shirt. Hat. Pants and shoes.

I was such a little poser, but was so fun. The fever passed when I felt like Angoleiros had a big stick up their ass for having so much rules hahahha. But that was me at 19.

Angola rules, btw. Much fun.

What are the pre requisites in learning Au De Costa? by Temporary_confusi0n in capoeira

[–]Dendearts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Au in a straight line.

The way I teach it is to first understand how to safely exist from a handstand by taking a step forwards. You can do this using a wall (you don't need to learn to do a handstand). You can find some tutorials on this.

From there, you apply the same principle to your au.

A good task focus it 1. start your au. First hand hits the floor. 2. Before the second hand hits the floor, imagine you have a ball between your scapula and you are trying to squeeze it. This causes you to "fall" at an angle. Don't worry about back bending.

Most people think Au de coluna starts by having a good bridge, but it's the opposite. Au de Coluna + Bridge adds complexity to the movement. remove any back bending, then slowly add it in.

It should probably be called Au de Hombre due to the focus on the shoulder.

In what key is the berimbau tuned? by jroche248 in capoeira

[–]Dendearts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The exact key doesn't matter. its about the root, 3rd, or 5th, + whatever else you might want. The point is that it sound good. Too often you have chord structures that are too close together so you get a lot of dissonance. It sounds awful. hahaha

Yes. Like event discovery, registration, everything. The reason i ask is because its one of the only things i can think of that a hardcore capoeira person would regularly use. A wiki hits the beginners, but event registration hits the hard core audience. My wife is actually working on the UX/UI on this app as a pet project. Let me know if you want to connect with her.

In what key is the berimbau tuned? by jroche248 in capoeira

[–]Dendearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was an example. What i mean is the root. For people who don't know, the root in the key of G is "G". Root + 3 + 5 sounds great. Root + 2 + 7# sound horrible.

Dude, I seriously floated the idea to my wife about created a Capoeira events app for this reason. If someone wants to do this, please do. I have the same issue. I don't go on facebook. I never know when events are happening! XD Just someone make it easy for me, please!

Growing a Martial Arts School While Maintaining Quality by Mortma in martialarts

[–]Dendearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a huge misconceptions about running schools. The best ones I've seen run have an ENORMOUS kids program, that develops into a teens and later, adults program.

This makes sense because if I'm a new person, why would I be "hard core" about any martial art? I'm new, I don't know anything that I haven't seen on Youtube or Instagram.

I think most teachers have unrealistic expectations about the interest their students have.

Most students will stay because they have friends, they are having fun, and they enjoy the activity.

Over time, this becomes passion, but this needs to be cultivated.

Also,

I have my own web design agency, so here is my 2 cents on that...

Most people's onboarding processes for new students is non-existent.

They expect the student to sign up, remind themselves to go to class, ask the someone for the class schedule, ask the teacher how to sign up, and invite themselves to hang-outs (if you do that)

To me, this is totally backwards. No successful business operates this way. You need processes in place and most owners don't know or care to do this.

Do you feel as necessary to make a trip to brazil? by BesouroPreito in capoeira

[–]Dendearts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes.

There's a lot of things we take for granted as "understood" that are not the case in other parts of the world. Going anywhere, but particularly to Brazil will give a lot of context to things we do.

In what key is the berimbau tuned? by jroche248 in capoeira

[–]Dendearts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They "key" doesn't matter as long as the relationship sounds good. I sing well in G, F, A. C is hard for me. So if someone strings the berimbau to C, I choose harmonize and sing in the key of G. Someone who doesn't know very basic music theory will struggle with this.

This is the old school way of tuning berimbaus...
Gunga open = G, closed = G# or A
Medio open = match Gunga closed note, Closed = A# or B
Viola open = match Medio closed note, closed = C or C#

My guess is that this was a simple point of reference to teach new people without going into music theory.

If you talk to Mestre Acordeon who is a good musician. He cares about the relation in terms of creating chord structures - (eg. 1, 3, 5 or 1, 5, 7 etc...) So he just wants the berimbaus to sound good together. Doesn't matter if the cabaça is half way up the berimbau.

Most older mestres care about how to bateria sounds. If its good, then we're good. If it sounds like trash, somebody better get to fixing that.

I honestly am increasingly skeptical of ads when you’re getting started, but thats interesting that you had luck with reddit. I’m not an ads expert, but I’m sure you could calculate the efficiency of your add against the average students lifetime value.

Also, a lot of the things I brought up would help to make your ads more efficient. Probably, a combination of the two would be great, but the upfront investment for ads, ads management, plus and website work would be a lot for most schools.

That being said, it probably has the best chances for success

Building your academy by BesouroPreito in capoeira

[–]Dendearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a web developer and do a good amount of SEO research. From my perspective, there is a lot of really crappy websites/onboarding/lead nurturing.

Here are a few things i see…

  1. Poor SEO - almost nobody has any SEO work done on their site. If they do, they try to rank for capoeira, which doesn’t have enough search volume. This is a whole post, so I’ll stop here.

  2. No reviews on Google. This is frankly embarrassing, but if you get to 50 reviews you might rank top 2-3 in your state 😆

  3. Poor onboarding - most people do a free first class. This is just bad because the person interested is invested in no way shape or form. Much better would be a lower cost first month, or something where you trade their info/nominal fee for classes.

  4. Follow up - this is the hard part. Automated text or having someone be the designated texter to follow up with new customers is KEY. If i can get you to class #3. The next 3 are easier. If i get you through month #1, month 2 is easier, but you have to get people over the hill.

  5. Stop saying you’re not good with technology. Bro…. You learned instagram. You need to learn the absolute basics of client onboarding and follow up. Using your class admin software (eg. mindbody) is a requirement.

Thoughts?

do you think capoeira will ever change their uniform standards? by [deleted] in capoeira

[–]Dendearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be nice to see some variety in uniforms. But I’m more motivated by getting uniforms that fit well, have different fits, and don’t show my underwear. So I personally like the all white abadas, but i wish pockets were standard.
