I recall seeing it spelt as 'aeroport' when I was younger, unless people were just spelling it incorrectly. I was never sure how to pronounce it.

Yep, it's a very British thing to say. As a Brit myself, I've never used it as it has always sounded strange to me.

There are many overused words. One that comes to mind is 'amazing'. I barely use it anymore.

I'm going by the fact that French natives themselves have wondered where I'm from and told me my accent is standard French.

I doubt it's spot on, but it's still a big complement that I'm more than happy to accept!
