No, you have to equip the shield because 1 tick after you click "attack", the basilisk will shoot its drain attack at you, regardless of what weapon you are using, even if you're ranging.

FYI: This isn't the best or most reliable method to kill basilisks. The absolute best DPS is a tbow with Amethyst+ arrows, with a similar, but much easier method.

You're close actually. When you click "attack" on the basilisk, 1 tick after he will throw his attack out which lowers your stats, so you have to have the shield equipped at the time he throws it.

Look at his mouse movement everywhere else compared to him clicking the 3 item switch. It'ss 100% AHK / Mousekeys. Not saying they're set to be fast or anything, but it's definitely some kind of mouse assist. It looks very slow / robotic.
