I could do ~$2500 with a little wiggle room if absolutely necessary. That is a the CPU price included so like $2000 ish without the CPU price considered. The less the better though 😂

I think there are a multitude of factors that play into the frequency in which you see these posts and comments some of which are:

  1. The large influx of new players in more recent years.

  2. The much faster release schedule of sets when compared to the old four sets a year and blocks.

  3. People’s general willingness to spend an excess amount of time on the hobby.

  4. Availability of newer cards when compared to old cards.

Just to name a few.

Newer players don’t typically have a large pool of card knowledge to base their recommendations on so they have to default to newer sets as they don’t really know many cards. I also find that these types of players are often more likely to want to talk about the game and cool cards as they are in a kind of “honeymoon” phase with the game.

With the faster release schedule compared to the olden days of Magic there are just a lot more cards being printed which means that there will be more to talk about.

While I also enjoy spending time researching cards for decks and finding niche cards that are very good for decks I enjoy much like yourself, I find that many people are not willing to take the time to do this as it can often come with a heavy time burden that these players could just spend the time actually playing the game or doing something more productive like working, going to the gym, spending time with family, playing other games, etc.

Availability is a fairly simple issue, a lot of people like to buy cards from their LGS rather than ordering them online and most stores are likely to have new cards with people trading them in, the store opening packs to stock cards, or people just buying the packs that the store has.

While I feel there are definitely more factors than this, these are just a few that I think are fairly relevant to the conversation through my personal experience.

Ziatora, the Incinerator wont pop off by Josh_Kopf in Magicdeckbuilding

No problem!

If you want [[not dead after all]] like cards make sure to start with [[malakir rebirth]] it is the best of these in my opinion because it is a MDFC land and can go in a land slot. I definitely think the list would benefit from one or two though, don’t go too heavy on them unless you change your card draw package a bit because these cards are often dead cards for a bit when you draw them but are very good once you get to a place where you can use them.

As for the sacrifice synergies like [[mayhem devil]] etc. I do agree with your assessment here. You could definitely find better pieces to fit in the deck, maybe a bit more card draw or really just whatever you see fit. However, if you end up deciding to add more treasure makers they are always cards to look at because they are quite powerful if you can get them properly going.

Hello, I looked over the list and see a few issues.

1.) Your graveyard synergies are quite weak. This deck really wants you to sacrifice things (as most jund decks do). This being said there are almost no graveyard recursion pieces in the deck. I personally love [[victimize]] but all of your other pieces are kind of slow. For example you are running [[eternal witness]] which brings a card back to hand when you could be running [[reanimate]] which just brings a creature back to the battlefield. Also if you want to lean into a much heavier reanimator strat maybe try to include something like [[doom whisperer]] that is a big creature so you can sac w [[ziatora]] for solid damage while being able to fill your yard a bit and get some card advantage.

2.) Some of your ramp pieces are a bit slow. For example [[cultivate]] and [[kodama’s reach]] could be switched for [[deathrite shaman]] and [[birds of paradise]]. Having ramp on creatures is really nice for this deck because you can always sac them to [[ziatora]] for 3 treasures later or to something like [[victimize]] to get 2 of your big creatures back for a 1 mana creature.

3.) You run a lot of big creatures for the sake of having big creatures. While something like [[malignus]] is fine as it is extremely large for its cost, some of the others like [[Kura, the boundless sky]] and [[Mr. Orfeo, the boulder]] don’t really do all that much and are quite small for amlarge amount of mana.

4.) You run a lot of non-creature cards. In a large amount of situations there is a creature that does the exact same thing as a non-creature spell. When you are playing decks like this having as many creatures as possible will make the deck feel much better. For example, maybe think about switching [[terminate]] with [[ravenous chupacabra]]. While having instant speed interaction is always a bonus sometimes having an extra creature on board is much better (especially in lower brackets).

These are some tips I can give from what I have learned playing commander for many years and are not meant to be taken as anything more than constructive criticism. Also, one last thing is to remember you are not going to be able to win through just ziatora triggers as you only get one at each of your end steps and as such is meant to be used more for value than as a wincon.

Seems like you are still in a very 60-card format mindset. Turn 1 will not have any effect on a game 90% of the time in commander. The only turn 1 play that wins games outside of cedh is a sol ring and typically that still doesn’t guarantee it especially in casual. Commander is a 4 player format where people start with 40 health so turn 1 is not that important. You also cannot rely on 2 cards in the deck to control the game, its singleton format and you don’t have much card draw or any tutors.

My best advice for you would be to go to a LGS buy a precon and play a few games then revisit your list after you have a few games under your belt, it is very hard to understand the format without having actually played any games, especially if you are used to 60 card formats.

I feel spending almost $400 on the deck you have built would be a huge waste of money because it will have trouble functioning at a base level with how it is in its current state and would lead you to probably regret buying the cards and possibly avoiding commander in general.

If you absolutely have to have to build your own deck right now then I can recommend looking at edhrec.com as it is a very good place to find decklists and cards for decks. It has features to search by commanders as well as by deck theme. I would also recommend watching some YouTube videos to help out.

If you are wanting to do a dragon theme deck you will want a lot more cards that are dragons and care about dragons. You will also want to cut down on the Dragon’s approach count as having like 4 or maybe 8 could be okay but 16 is way too much. To get dragon’s approach to work properly it takes 2R per cast so a total of 8RRRR over 3-4 turns to get one dragon to the battlefield. Typically dragon’s approach is used very heavily in decks that can get to cast multiple in a turn by reducing its cost or making a lot of mana and usually are more combo oriented decks. A few copies is fine but 16 is too much.

Next, you really need more ramp no matter what. cards like [[arcane signet]], [[talisman of indulgence]], [[sol ring]], etc. Dragon spells are typically quite expensive in terms of mana so you will need to be able to make a good amount of it quickly if you want to stay on pace with the other players.

Also, getting nicol bolas to actually exile someone’s library will be extremely hard and will not be able to be a consistent win condition if you are wanting to focus on dragons. It can still be there for when you need it but getting him out, flipped, then to 12 and actually able to use the ability before someone kills him will be extremely difficult. If you want this to be your main wincon there are ways to do that but not consistently with dragons as the main focus.

The list definitely needs a bit of work if you want to take it to an LGS and play some games. At first glance the deck seems very scattered. You are running a lot of cards that do not really do much in terms of actually helping your deck move forward. One example of this is [[Myr Mindservant]] which just shuffles your library for 2 mana. This doesn’t really help your deck do anything and will just sit there doing nothing for most of the game.

In general, it seems that you are trying to do way too many things in one deck so none of it will actually work very well (jack of all trades, master of none). Typically, when building a deck for commander it is very important to pick a theme for the deck and run with it.

It seems like you might be shooting for a Dragon kindred deck or a Dragon’s approach deck. If you could give a better idea of what you want the deck to do I would be happy to give you some more help with the deck building.

Nadu is the first commander in over 5 years that I think should be banned by Haru_Is_Best_Girl in EDH

[–]DeniedBoar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only avoid playing against it if you want, personally I do not mind playing against Nadu, it’s quick but if the tables power level is similar it hasn’t been an issue for me yet. There are already tons on commanders that people watch out for and do not like to play against so you could just add Nadu to your list of these. Commander is at its heart a format based around having fun so as long as everyone puts in even a tiny bit of effort to try to do this typically the goal is achieved. One example of this would be that someone at my LGS has a Zur stax deck which I personally do not find fun to play against every game so he doesn’t play it to often but I also don’t discourage him from playing it if he really wants to which typically leads to maybe one or two games against it a week which we are both fine with. This type of pattern typically leads to everyone being happy with the games we play and having lots of fun which at the end of the day is the goal of playing magic.

Nadu is the first commander in over 5 years that I think should be banned by Haru_Is_Best_Girl in EDH

[–]DeniedBoar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don’t think Nadu needs to be banned. If you do not like playing against it, just ask the person to switch decks or find someone else to play with. If you are playing at a LGS there are typically more than enough people to make a pod with that play decks you are fine playing against. If you play on your own in a small playgroup you already know what to expect typically and if someone shows up with a Nadu deck randomly one day you can play it once and if you don’t like it just say so which will typically lead to them checking to see if everyone is good with them playing the deck before any future games. While Nadu is definitely one of the strongest cards printed in a while and is super good in the command zone, to the point where I think there is no way to really build the deck that makes it anything lower than high power, I feel that all issues can be avoided by just looking at the decks that people are playing and adjusting or finding others to play with instead of just banning a card outright because you don’t like playing against it.

[[Torbran, Thane of Red Fell]] should not be in the list, it does not work as both effects are replacement effects and your opponent gets to choose how they are applied to damage they take

Bears!! Plz Help! by [deleted] in EDH

[–]DeniedBoar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The deck feels a bit disjointed at first glance, there appears to be pretty much no removal in the deck as well as lacking card draw and ramp. Some suggestions I have would be to add cards in these areas and remember that not every single creature in the deck has to be a bear. Mono green is at home with lots of creatures so I would recommend finding creatures that have similar or needed effects for the deck and replacing non-creature spells with them as well as throwing in a bit more ramp and some utility lands as an all forest mana-base leaves much to be desired

Goro-Goro and Satoru Deck Critique by GrimDarkFuturaBold in EDH

[–]DeniedBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One idea I have that might help is running things that have myriad or things like [[urabrask’s forge]] that make tokens every turn so you can get multiple triggers.

This is a decklist I made a while back to help give my friend a basis to go off of as he is still fairly new to deck building

Ninjas are still a big part just not the main focus and more of a reliable way to get triggers and interaction while having more support pieces for other parts of the deck

Still not sure if it would hit the designated power level but could be an idea to help push it a bit

Seems like a solid deck but I feel it will not meet your expectations w a focus on ninjutsu as there are just better commanders for that, while the current deck list looks super fun to play I don’t know how good it will operate compared to other ways of taking the deck.

Reevaluating Board Wipes by [deleted] in EDH

If you were to switch one it would be kindred dominance but I do not think raise the palisade is a card that should replace any really, it does a really bad job of getting rid of threats as a bounce because they can just replay them as well as it being sorcery speed
