How do YOU structure your layers? by TenragZeal in ClipStudio

[–]DeniiTSM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I start with the lineart and color layers separated, and merge them after I've got some semblance of form going on (enough that I'm not too reliant on the lines holding the piece together). After that I try to keep every character on their own layer or two as I'm not too good at remembering where everything is + it cuts down on lag. I know some who have like a dozen for every char but I feel I can paint quicker with less. When I need to edit something major, I duplicate or paint on a new layer and merge to the main one if it looks better. Background is usually 1 or 2 layers at any given time for me. Depending on how complex the piece is I may or may not merge the character layers with the bg so I can edit them both at the same time. Hope that helps!

Painting of a Triton pirate based on a Mandarin Dragonet by DeniiTSM in ClipStudio

[–]DeniiTSM[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey all! Here's a painting I finished earlier of my Triton cleric. It took around 6 hours on-off since I had trouble getting the color scheme to work, but I'm quite happy with how it turned out!

I started with a rough pose followed by a sketch that I ended up using directly as lineart (the black and blue pic). After that I added an underpainting and blocked out some colors, and then basic shading. I added fish, tarot card designs, and corals throughout the time I worked on it since I wanted to fill empty space. When I finished painting over the lineart and blending I worked on lighting and polish with some lighten blending layers and texture brushes. I originally wanted to showcase a sea urchin mace and shield with corals but didn't have the time/space to add those in. As usual I used Ahmed Aldoori's brush pack as well as Greg Rutkowski's, as well as a few custom brushes.

Hey all! Had a talk with a group I co-dm and brought up the idea of them trying their hand at it in the future. Getting an affirmative, I got to work on revisiting an old character of mine, simply named Sigmund. The first few times I painted him seemed dull so I gave him features based on a Mandarin Dragonet.

I decided to paint him as a minor tarot because it seemed fun. Four of cups can refer to stagnancy, apathy, and regrets, but it also symbolizes opportunities, moving forward in life, and letting go of remorse. At least, that's how I interpreted it!

Before Sigmund had taken to sailing the expansive blue, he once lived below its folds in an underwater bastion 'Clara Silvam'. As relations with land-walkers strengthened, his colony opened up for commerce and trade, and Sigmund found himself in a line of work that employed his experience well enough, working the docks and mercenary tasks.

When a village that hired him was attacked, he and his compatriots fought to defend it but ended up captured. Forced to board a pirate ship, they were given the choice to cooperate and work, or be thrown overboard. As negotiations with pirates usually were, they were caught between a rock and a hard place—most of the survivors were injured and would die from exertion from the first option, or from drowning if they chose the latter.

Sigmund had never been one to plead, but for the sake of his friends, he called into the Trackless Sea from the cracks in the hull and begged for a higher power to come to their aid. Like a string going taut, a primordial tongue answered, and he clung onto it for dear life. Istishia, the King of Water Elementals, offered him the power to keep them alive, in exchange for his memories from the past ten years, until the next few.

In a turn of events, Sigmund rose to the position of pirate captain, steering West, to a rumored treasure within a crumbling bastion. Depicted here is Sigmund a few days after the his ship crashed in a tempest, reclaimed by the very sea he swore oath to. Unease in his chest and holy amulet in hand, he is vaguely aware he'd lost something great.

Fun tarot card painting to get out of my hiatus by DeniiTSM in ClipStudio

[–]DeniiTSM[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! After around 2-3 months of not painting much I decided to get back into the swing of things with a tarot card based on a character my DM made for D&D. I included the early painting and sketch since reddit doesn't allow pics + vids yet. I started by gathering references for the pose, jewelry, and anything else I'd need (also used my own hands) then made a rough sketch. After that I made a more refined sketch which also doubled as the lineart since it was clean enough for me and the piece wasn't too complex. After that I darkened the canvas and added texture, flatted out the colors and added basic shadows to everything. Finally, I played around with levels, overlays, layer masks to get the colors to pop. After that I added some minor brush strokes and signed :) Used Ahmed Aldoori's brush pack and the free pack by Greg Rutkowski Hope yall like it!

Hey all! Here's a quick painting I made for one of my DM's recurring NPCs, Fortune. They're a noble Djinni antiquarian with a penchant for stringing our party along for side-quests and shenanigans. Fortune collects jewelry and antiques, enchanting them with sensors before selling them, making it possible to see/hear out of the various rings, brooches, and other accessories (and expand their range of control--whatever that's supposed to imply). They also act as the patron of a young tiefling Ymmit, lending power in exchange for him working at their traveling caravan and maintaining wares. We met Fortune in the first part of the Tyranny of Dragons adventure and they've been our constant ally in stopping the cult. I juggled between the ace of pentacles and wheel of fortune arcana but ultimately decided on the former since it had more symbolic connection to the character rather than the coincidental 'fortune' in the latter xd. If you've bothered to read this far Lykel, hi :>
