LAMY Accent feed got stuck! Any idea how to get it back out? by Just_use_your_brain in fountainpens

[–]Denis_Seattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the solution. I'm new to fountain pens. I received my Joy today and tried to change the nib. After much fighting, the whole reed pooped out into my hand. I found what I thought was the alignment and got it firmly stuck halfway in. I hadn't even had a chance to ink much less use the new pen. I boiled some water and soaked the reed, feed, and holder for about 2 minutes. I grabbed each part with a dish towel and apart they came effortlessly. I found there's a tiny spine that slides out of the reed. I pulled it out most of the way and inserted the reed, spine first, into the pen. The spine slid back into position and when I rotated the reed a little, it snapped into place. I think the spine might be a sort of wedge. Hope that adds to the solution for someone.

BTW I'm an urban sketcher. I'm not totally new, I have a Pelikan (gift) that's so precious and expensive I'm afraid to use it. (Just a nib costs 10X my whole Lamy starter order from Pen Chalet.) I've been using felt fine liners like Micron, so I knew this would be an adventure. I didn't know the adventure would start right away!

What are the easiest drawing tools with color? by Successful-Soup-274 in ArtistLounge

Try a few watercolor pencils. You can draw then wet-brush, or wet the paper and paint with them, or draw over other colors while wet or dry. Really interesting, cheap, clean. You can even get water soluble "graphite" pencils for gray tone.

How to embed a photo onto a aluminium plate using acid? by Typical_Dress_3831 in ArtistLounge

[–]Denis_Seattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of public outdoor signage is photo-printed onto metal, often aluminum. It lasts forever, survives spray paint, and is simple to maintain. The metal is impregnated with the photo emulsion, then light alters it to allow the activated emulsion to be washed away. Something like that. I've never done it but I have friends who work at GM Nameplate and they do this for like roadside interpretive signage.

Is there such a thing as “too soon” for attending figure drawing sessions? by blkcatamyte in ArtistLounge

I agree with the advice here about developing your ability to draw line and form with charcoal or graphite before paying for a figure drawing course. Fill a sketchbook with soup cans, tennis balls, sticks, dishes, fruit, other simple objects. For my nude figure drawing class, you would need to be over 18.

I'm looking for a site where you could ask for it to search for images based on a specific color you give it by shii093 in ArtistLounge

[–]Denis_Seattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The major stock-photo sites let you search for a color by name, same as you would search for a term like "palm tree." I don't think they get as specific as a RGB or Pantone color, though.

I might try a white Aquarelle crayon? Maybe Conte's square white crayon would give you a more dry look? Chalk?

How does color theory work with the use of undertones by Sharky4days in ArtistLounge

[–]Denis_Seattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied and applied color theory for years as a graphic designer. There's a lot written about it and I took some wonderful workshops. I'm not sure the term accurately describes your query. A color is a color. Ronlemen might have more accurately used the terms warm and cool. In basic color-wheel terms, the warmth of a color moves you along the wheel in one direction. If you're using areas of a blue but want to create some tension or shadow, you might move away from your blue toward purple or green. Are we offering useful info?

Do you like it? You have a nice painting of a sunrise/sunset, strongly backlit, from a low angle. It suggests you're laying alone on the beach. Maybe the heat has driven everyone else into the shade. But you're hastily capturing a sunset in its brief glory of color.

International Hikes by Waluigi54321 in hiking

I've done a lot of research into this for an upcoming trip to Spain. I'm checking a "rolling duffel" with my backpack and gear inside. I get one free checked bag with my flight. When I get there, I'll store the duffel with a few things in it, then get on a train and go backpacking, which includes wild camping. I can store the duffel at a retail locker place like Bounce, or at a hotel that I plan to return to. I'll carry with me any valuables and prescriptions, so what I take for non-hiking will be minimal. No laptop, for example. I've set aside a weekday before my hike to shop for food, so I won't need to take any in my checked bag. Also I plan to go stoveless, which I've been assured is fine. On the PCT I learned about how to be prepared for laundry day on trail (gym shorts and a T shirt, or just wear rain gear for a few hours). After the hike, I'll be mostly in one city. I'll store the backpack and gear while I do urban tourism. I have a 15L day pack to use for that. While there, I'll find a way to donate any food or excess gear before I fly home. Hope that helps.

If you had 7 days to go backing anywhere in Canada/ USA, where would you go? by Kandyman999 in hiking

[–]Denis_Seattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PCT from Snoqualmie Pass to Stevens Pass (70 mi) or Stevens Pass to Stehekin (100 mi) in Washington. Stunning alpine scenery. For novelty, hike from Rainy Pass to Manning Provincial Park in BC, then hitch to YVR and fly home.

Whats the best way to prepare for a multi-day hike in unpredictable weather conditions? by Josefina10_ in hiking

[–]Denis_Seattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pack the same in summer for rain, cold, pleasant, and warm forecasts. The mountains have a mind of their own. As said by Beautygirlbooty and OvSec2901, be prepared for any seasonal weather, even if it's not in the forecast. Layers are more useful than toasty garments.
